How Cities Negotiate Memory, Power, and Public Life A reflection from my work within the Master’s program in Architecture and Urban Design. Reading İstanbul as layered urban landscapes shaped by movement, heritage, identity, and social transformation. As architects and urban designers all over the world, are we still designing spaces for people to live in or simply spaces to move through?

As part of our Architectural Design VII project, we explored Urban Insertion and how architecture interacts with its surrounding context. By studying projects like the Jewish Museum Berlin, Select Citywalk, and ISBT Sector 43, we understood how spaces shape human experience, movement, and urban life. Grateful for the learning experience and the collaborative effort behind this project.

As part of our Architectural Design VII coursework, we worked on a group case study exploring the idea of urban insertion—how buildings respond to and shape their surroundings. We studied the Jewish Museum Berlin, Select Citywalk, and ISBT Sector 43, each showing a different approach to architecture within the city—from emotional and narrative-driven spaces to commercial hubs and functional infrastructure. This exercise helped us understand how architecture is not just about form, but about people, movement, and context. This was a group effort by Pranali Gawner, Bhakti Umarkar, Hariharasudhan M , Harshali Sadavarte, and Chiranthan Kandgal. The link : https://lnkd.in/gz_JaatB

Mid-century modern gave us restraint, clean lines, and a connection to nature. Charles Haertling took those same principles and asked: what if geometry could be expressive without losing discipline? Working primarily from the 1960s through the 1980s, his designs reflect a moment in architectural history where experimentation met discipline, not a contemporary movement. His work still follows structure, still honors the landscape. But the lines soften. The forms feel less imposed, more emergent. So the question becomes: restraint or expression? #Architecture #MidCenturyModern #OrganicArchitecture #DesignInspiration #ColoradoArchitecture
