Harmful gambling has a huge impact on the UK, not only on the healthcare and criminal justice systems, but also on the economy, costing around £1.4 billion a year. It can also have serious personal impacts, such as depression and suicide. That’s why we’re proud to be launching the UK’s largest independent gambling harms research centre through the Government’s Gambling Levy, to direct world-leading research on how to tackle and prevent gambling harms. The centre, led by University of Glasgow, The University of Sheffield, Swansea University / Prifysgol Abertawe, and King's College London, will work with government, health bodies, charities, people with lived experience of gambling, and the wider research community to generate and apply independent, evidence-led research. This collaboration will strengthen policy, practice and public understanding across the UK. Read more on our webpage. Department for Culture, Media and Sport
A strong step toward evidence-led prevention and support collaboration between research, policy, and lived experience is essential to tackling gambling harms effectively across the UK.
