“You’re not ready yet.” It’s one of the most common reasons organizations hold back high-performing talent. They haven’t done that exact job. They haven’t led that specific function. Their resume doesn’t perfectly match the role. Here’s the problem with that logic: No one ever gets the experience until someone gives them the opportunity. More than once in my career at Gibson, leaders tapped me to step into roles where I didn’t have the full experience yet. On paper, there were probably candidates who looked more “ready.” But someone was willing to take a chance – thank you, Tim Leman, Brock Squire, and David Walters! Those moments stretched me beyond what I thought I was capable of. They accelerated my learning and ultimately became some of the most rewarding chapters of my career. It’s one of the things I’ve always appreciated about Gibson’s culture – leaders are willing to see potential before it’s fully proven. A company in your region has a problem. Your #university has research that could solve it. But the company doesn't know that. So they partner with a university in the US instead. Not because the research is better. Because someone over there connected the dots first. This is happening more than anyone wants to admit. And here's what makes it worse. When your leadership compares your deal numbers to what US offices are reporting, the context disappears. They don't see the resource gap. They see numbers. And they draw conclusions. The #TechTransfer offices changing this right now are doing something specific. They're systematically mapping their portfolios to regional industry needs. Surfacing deals that were always there. And when they walk into a meeting with leadership, they're showing a pipeline, not defending their existence. Your research is not the problem. The visibility of your research is the problem. And every quarter that stays invisible is a quarter someone on another continent is closing your deal.

Sometimes your value is best measured by who notices you… and who can’t keep up. A few years ago, I was exploring opportunities in the security industry. One company I interviewed with didn’t move forward—but I kept learning, growing, and building experience at a large corporate player with patented products. Fast forward: I applied elsewhere, and within one casual conversation, a corporate leader recognized the depth of my experience and hired me immediately. Lesson? 💡 Build expertise that speaks for itself. Don’t chase approval from companies that aren’t structured to match your level. Your next opportunity will find you—sometimes faster than you expect. To those navigating their careers: focus on growth, not just the next interview.
