Do you capitalize each word in your headings in elearning? Maybe use sentence case instead. Headings written in sentence case are easier on the eyes and brain. When we capitalize only the first word, the text feels familiar — like how we normally read and speak. But when every major word is capitalized, our eyes pause more often, breaking the rhythm of reading. A study on title design and readability explains that “typographical features such as case and formatting can influence the cognitive load during reading.” In other words, how we style a title can actually change how hard the brain has to work to process it. That’s why sentence case usually feels smoother and more human — it lets the content, not the capital letters, do the talking.

That perfectionist teacher brain wants to make your first eLearning course a masterpiece with every bell and whistle imaginable. Stop right there. The most sophisticated eLearning isn't the one with talking avatars and complex branching scenarios. It's the one that gets learners from point A to point B without unnecessary friction. Your years of classroom experience already taught you this. The lessons that worked best weren't the ones with 47 different activities crammed into 50 minutes. They were the ones with clear objectives, purposeful practice, and students who could actually DO something new by the end. The same principle applies to eLearning design. While you're worried about mastering every feature in Storyline, other candidates are getting hired with clean, simple courses that solve real business problems. Your teaching background gives you something most eLearning designers lack: you understand that engagement isn't about entertainment. It's about helping people learn efficiently and effectively. The corporate world is drowning in flashy, confusing training that nobody wants to take. They need someone who can cut through the noise and create learning experiences that actually work. That someone is you. You just need to trust that simple is sophisticated. Stop overcomplicating your portfolio pieces. Do you add reflection points in a course? Honestly, as a learner, when I see that, I skip it. But, what does the research say? Most online learners move quickly from one assignment to the next, but real learning happens when they stop to think about what they just did. Reflection questions help learners slow down, notice what they’ve learned, and see how it connects to real life. In eLearning, that pause can deepen understanding and make lessons stick. As Chang (2019) explains, “Reflection allows learners to step back to review the whole process of learning and to recognize the value of the knowledge holistically, not just fragments of knowledge.” When learners reflect, they turn scattered information into a connected story. A simple prompt like “What did I learn, and why does it matter?” can transform a course from a checklist into a true learning experience.
