Just wrapped up a finance automation project for a US retail client with multiple locations. Their accounting team was buried in manual work, spending hours every week reviewing messy wire transfer PDFs and manually entering them into QuickBooks. It was slow and error-prone. I built a fully automated pipeline using n8n, AI, and QuickBooks Online to solve this. How it works (as shown in the image below): 1) Trigger & Split: A new PDF upload in Google Drive starts the process. The file is held for audit while a parallel path starts extracting data. 2) AI Extraction: Doctly AI reads the messy PDF layout, and an OpenAI extracts the exact date, amount, and vendor. 3) Validation: A code step cleans the data, ensuring dates and numbers are perfectly formatted. 4) Execution: The pipeline authenticates with QuickBooks, creates and posts the journal entry, and attaches the original PDF as proof. By separating OCR ("reading") from AI ("understanding"), we ensure 100% accuracy before any data touches the ledger. Top-notch Power BI people should be working for themselves. In the United States the market rate for top notch Power BI work is $2500/day. If you can find ONE CLIENT that needs you ONE DAY A WEEK, you can earn $130,000 a year. If those numbers sound high (for people that don't know Power BI), the amount of value you can add to an organization in a short amount of time is very, very high. Many (maybe most) organizations are operating without a clear scoreboard on how they're performing or fair metrics that are helpful for making improvements. Top-notch work = (technical) handle data transformation and cleaning from data sources into middle layer and conformed into a great semantic model; develop complex calculations using DAX; (non-technical) expertise in at least one, preferably multiple, business subject areas; ability to lead a conversation around the metrics, incentives, and behaviors that drive business success. As a top-notch Power BI person, here's what I hear often, "We've been trying to get this done for six months and you helped us get it done in one day." If you're someone that can generate a response like that, you might consider working for yourself. If that's you and you need a nudge, reach out.
