The nonprofit sector is in crisis, and Southern California is feeling it firsthand. As of June 2025, The Chronicle of Philanthropy reports that over 14,000 nonprofits nationwide could close within months without federal funding, putting 2.8 million jobs and essential services at risk. In our region, nonprofits are not only reeling from layoffs but are also being called to respond to urgent crises like wildfires, housing instability, and public health gaps with fewer resources than ever. This is not just about lost funding. It is about dismantling the infrastructure that protects and uplifts our communities. CNM is standing with frontline leaders and equipping mission-driven organizations with the tools, training, and visibility they need to persist and lead. The Oregon Community Foundation
Small businesses power Oregon’s economy, but ideas alone aren’t enough to get to market. This month, Oregon Community Foundation invested $903,000 through its Thriving Entrepreneurs program to support 42 nonprofits helping underrepresented and rural small business owners access capital, coaching, connections and markets. These investments strengthen the systems that help businesses grow and communities thrive in every corner of Oregon. The program has awarded more than $3.5 million statewide since it began five years ago. This year, 79% of grants support organizations located in or serving rural areas, including: Central Coast Food Web is helping local food businesses scale up and reach new markets. Friends of Family Farmers is expanding services for Spanish, Swahili and Russian speakers in Junction City. Heppner Community Foundation in Morrow County is managing a business innovation hub, commercial kitchen and retail store and more. Oregon Entrepreneurs Network is expanding into rural Oregon with a program that offers early-stage companies an opportunity to compete for an investment award. Rural Development Initiatives, Inc. is helping people of color in rural areas build agriculture and food industry businesses. Rural Engagement & Vitality Center (REV) provides business development coaching, mentorship and technical assistance to bring new jobs and wealth to Eastern Oregon.
