Terry Yates shared thisInteresting list, good insights.Terry Yates shared thisWhich companies have the biggest UXR teams, and how fast are they growing? This is a difficult question to answer. Without access to internal data, the best way I can see is to use LinkedIn. I’ve been running searches periodically for the last year to give it a try. (See the comments for additional details and links to prior posts, where you can read lots of critiques and discussion.) A few highlights: 👉 It’s amazing to see how much these big UXR teams have grown in the last year. I recently calculated that the overall field grew about 25% in the last year (see link to the post below.) Taken together, these results suggest that growth in the field remains top-heavy, with the biggest teams getting even bigger faster than smaller teams are growing. 👉 AnswerLab, JPMorgan Chase, and Indeed have shown particularly explosive growth this last year, ranging from 74% to 88% in my estimates. 👉IBM and Capital One are showing the least growth of companies I had both timepoints for. They are the only companies with no higher than single-digit growth. 👉For the first time, I combined subsidiaries and units that often list themselves separately. This made it clear that some companies that were previously not on this list—and maybe not even on the radar of the field broadly— may actually be UXR powerhouses, like Accenture and Tata Group. 👉Apparently SAP also has a huge team that I missed before. Have they grown a lot recently? Here are my full estimates for April, 2022, with YoY percent changes included whenever I had the earlier data available. I want to explain in more detail that in earlier attempts to compile this list I mostly just used whatever people had entered into LinkedIn to assign them to a company. The issue with doing it that way is that teams that most people would think of as belonging to the same company were sometimes split up—for example, AWS and Amazon were listed separately in my November list. I’ve now tried to combine all subsidiaries and separately listed units. My guess is that sometimes this combines UXR teams that really function almost entirely independently. For example, do the various UXR teams of companies owned by the Tata Group interact at all? Do Twitch UXRs interact with other Amazon UXRs? From what I’ve seen, the Instagram UXR team seems to be fairly well integrated with the broader Meta UXR team, but I don’t know if that’s how they see themselves. I’d love to hear any thoughts from folks on when to split and when to merge teams. #uxresearch #designresearch #userresearch #uxr #ux

Terry Yates shared thisGreat story, makes me feel humble.Terry Yates shared thisOne evening my mother made dinner after a hard day's work. She put a plate of eggs, salad and burnt toast in front of my father ... I immediately noticed, the burnt toast .... And, I was waiting to see if he was going to complain about it, but my father started to eat them, smiling and asked me how I spent my day at school ... My mom apologized to my dad for the burnt toast. I will never forget his response to her: "Honey, I love burnt toast!" Later when I went to bed and my dad came over to kiss me goodnight, I asked him if he really liked the burnt toast? He hugged me and said, "Your mother has had a difficult day and she is really tired. She went out of her way to prepare this meal for us, why blame her and hurt her. Burnt toast never hurt anyone; but words can be very painful! " We have to know how to appreciate what others do for us, even if it's not perfect, because it's the intention to do well that counts, and no one is perfect ... 🙏 Author Unknown Original story Author update: Dr. A.PJ Abdul Kalam Thank you to all who shared the Author with me!

Terry Yates reacted on thisTerry Yates reacted on thisThe normal way to enjoy one’s weekend off after extensive, nationwide work travel would be to rest and relax. Not me! I had a blast volunteering my services a couple of weekends ago as a 2nd AC for this proof of concept directed by Trenton Judson and produced/AD by Lizbeth Luz Sanchez Cazares , and extremely excited for the future of this project. It felt great to exercise the creative side of my brain and getting back onto a film set. (I still love my job at Magna Legal Services , don’t get fooled 🤨) You do it for the love of the game!

Terry Yates reacted on thisThis is not good.Terry Yates reacted on thisCVS filled your prescription and then sold your data to the drug company that made it. Same patient. Same day. Same corporation profiting on both sides........They call it CVS Media Exchange (CMX) - you have likely never heard of it. Very few people outside the ad tech industry know this exists. CMX is a retail media network built on top of 90 million ExtraCare loyalty members and 25 years of purchase history data. Every prescription you fill. Every over-the-counter product you buy. Every MinuteClinic visit. Every digital interaction on their website. All of it packaged and sold to pharmaceutical advertisers. Still think CVS cares about your privacy? Their own VP of CMX said at a conference last year that they strong-armed marketing departments into spending money on the platform. His exact words included that if brands do not spend, there are ramifications. That is a direct quote from the person running this operation. It gets worse. CMX partnered with The Trade Desk to let advertisers run programmatic campaigns using CVS pharmacy customer data. They partnered with Reddit so drug companies can target Reddit users based on CVS shopping behavior. They built an AI platform called CorIQ to make the targeting even more precise. So here is how the loop works. You walk into CVS. You fill your prescription. CVS collects your data. CMX packages it. A pharmaceutical company buys ad targeting from CMX. That company serves you an ad for another drug. You walk back into CVS and fill that prescription too. CVS collects that data. CMX sells it again. Forgot about GoodRx getting fined $26.5 million for selling patient data to Facebook? CVS is doing it legally through a subsidary they built specifically for this purpose. Same concept. Different wrapper. Bigger scale. 90 million patients worth of data. Remember this is the same company that controls your insurance through Aetna, your formulary through Caremark, your primary care through Oak Street, and your home health assessment through Signify. Now they also control the advertising pipeline between the manufacturer who makes your drug and the screen you are staring at right now. And the pharmacist at your local independent who actually knows your name? They do not have a retail media network. They do not sell your data. They do not have 90 million profiles. They just fill your prescription and counsel you on how to take it safely. That is the difference. Ultimately CVS stopped being a pharmacy company a long time ago. It is an advertising company that happens to have pharmacies. The patient is the product. Your health data is the inventory. And every time you tap that ExtraCare card you are restocking their shelves. Drop a comment if you had any idea CVS was running an ad network on top of your pharmacy data. I am betting most of you did not.

Terry Yates liked thisTerry Yates liked thisThis summer let's take a stand! Have you had enough of these awkward places where our kids are second-class citizens? If you’re tired of feeling torn in two by programs that can’t fully meet your needs because they don’t fully include your child, this is for you. What if your child could be a contributor and a co-creator, not just a tagalong? This is our starting point with Edge Tomorrow. We’re not just coming up with child-friendly activities. We’re giving kids a meaningful role to play, and an environment that enables them to do real work. Picture your child, teaming up with other kids, to design a new kind of museum, produce a pop-up marketplace, forge a voting system that lets kids share their voice. Or simply build a zany escape room or new kind of currency. We don’t know what they will build yet, but we have enough cardboard, digital tools, mentors, and fairy lights to help them do it, whatever it is. This isn’t about performative or token participation. This is about informing the design of our future institutions with the uncanny, subversive, lucid thinking of children. It’s giving them a sense of what the world could be with them as authors, guided and contained by the best thinking in intentional child-centered design. Announcing Edge Tomorrow, May 30 through June 27 in Healdsburg, California at Edge Esmeralda. This is a creative intergenerational residency for kids and adult collaborators, part of a pop-up village of 1,000 people devoted to discovering new patterns for living, learning, and creating together. If you’re a family who wants your child in an environment where they are taken seriously as a creator, this is for you. If you’re a sponsor or partner interested in supporting a living prototype of what intergenerational learning and contribution can look like, we’d love to connect. https://lnkd.in/g7nASsE6

As a business owner, cultivating favor is invaluable. Think about it: Imagine having favor with your supervisor at a job. Their support could lead to significant opportunities, like a doubled salary. That's the power of favor in action. This principle extends to business ownership, where building trust and positive relationships can unlock unexpected advantages and growth. #BusinessOwnership #ProfessionalGrowth #WorkplaceDynamics #Favor #Trust

The technical side of broadcasting is often viewed through the lens of gear—the bitrates, the signal strength, and the precision of the automation. However, true technical excellence is about creating a seamless bridge between the action on the field and the listener at home. When the audio is crisp and the transitions are tight, the technology becomes invisible, allowing the raw emotion of the game to take center stage. High-level production isn't just about operating equipment; it is about mastering the tools of the trade to ensure that nothing distracts from the story being told. Ultimately, the goal of every professional broadcast is to foster a genuine connection through the noise. Whether it’s a local high school opener or a professional playoff game, the technical workflow serves as the foundation for trust with the audience. By prioritizing reliability and play-by-play accuracy, a broadcaster transforms a standard transmission into an immersive experience. It’s the meticulous attention to detail in the booth and behind the scenes that turns a simple signal into a lasting connection with every person tuned in.

Rapid DaVinci Resolve 2024 https://amzn.eu/d/0cTOkjLt Rapid DaVinci Resolve 2024+ presents DaVinci Resolve 18 and 19 in a way which eliminates your need to learn and use the application’s truly massive set of keyboard commands. DaVinci Resolve 2024+provides a curated set of mnemonic keyboard shortcuts along with a small set of menu selections that enable you to quickly learn how to import clips, edit video and audio timelines, add FX, color grade scenes, control audio, and export movies. Resolve 2024+ has been extensively revised with 20-percent additional new content. Unlike Blackmagic’s gigantic 4000-page PDF, Rapid DaVinci Resolve 2024+ is a 200 page paperback book. And, compared with their gigantic PDF's one-page index, Resolve 2024+ has an easy-to-use index. Today most cameras and smartphones capture one of four flavors of HDR video. Rapid DaVinci Resolve 2024+ has a bonus book—A No-budget Guide to Creating HDR Movies—within the paperback. Why is Rapid DaVinci Resolve 2024+ so much better than other books which document Resolve. Because it has been written by an experienced university professor. Steve taught Digital Video Production undergraduate and graduate courses at Rutgers University. In Philadelphia, he taught Electronic Cinematography at the University of the Arts. He also taught at the University of Minnesota and at Carleton College (Minnesota). Monday thoughts... In my work as a VoiceOver Talent, I don’t always voice commercials. Sometimes, I voice emergency alerts. I am the Spanish voice behind California’s power grid safety messaging, including fire risk alerts, severe weather notifications, and public safety power shutoff calls. These are the calls people receive when something serious is happening. When fires are near. When weather is turning. When power may need to be shut off for safety. In those moments, the message isn’t just information, it’s reassurance. These calls are how residents they know what’s happening and what to do next. And the tone of the voice matters. Calm matters. Clarity matters. Trust matters. I’m grateful to continue supporting California’s statewide voice over systems in helping deliver these messages when they’re needed most. I am glad my voice is used for systems that make a difference. If you’re responsible for communicating urgent information to your community and need a Spanish or English voice people can understand and trust, I’m always here to help. :) #SpanishVoiceOver #SpanishVoice #VO #BilingualVoice #Voiceover

For the major television crossover event between Beyond the Gates and The Young and the Restless at CBS Studios, production expanded into an entirely separate building and two soundstages. The initial discussion centered on deploying a traditional TV truck. Instead, I architected and led a different solution: extending our existing control room over fiber and IP while designing and deploying a temporary control room inside the new stages This approach enabled full transport of camera signals, video, communications, shading, and recording across buildings—maintaining centralized control, creative continuity, and operational efficiency across productions. The solution required approximately six weeks of planning and engineering, followed by a week and a half of deployment. The technical architecture included: • 8 Sony VENICE cameras plus 5 additional other cameras • Grassvalley switcher • RTS and Clear-Com communications • Calrec audio • Evertz routing From an execution standpoint, I led 38 technical professionals across four concurrent teams in four locations: a main unit, two second units, and a splinter unit while also supporting visual effects shots. The result was a near-flawless execution that saved hundreds of thousands of dollars and demonstrated how infrastructure-level thinking can unlock speed, scale, and cost efficiency for complex broadcast environments. The crossover episodes will air this summer on CBS and Paramount+. This is what happens when engineering strategy, production demands, and leadership execution are aligned. #BeyondTheGates #paramount #paramountpictures #cbs #cbsstudios #netflix #amazon #primevideo #nbc #nbcuniversal #warnerbros #sonypictures #lionsgate #marvel #abc #waltdisney #fox #a24 #disney #mgm #stx #amblin #skydance #apple #appletv #hbo #hbomax #showtime #peacock #wwe #ufc #youngandtheresteless #ynr

Jacobs Media, side by side study on Christian Radio Talent vs Mainstream radio talent. "One of the reasons Christian talent is upbeat about where they work is the training they’re getting for new technologies and skills, with 65% saying their station provides this, vs. just 34% for commercial radio talent. “The organizational culture is obviously a big deal — investing in people, tech, training, recruiting and developing young talent, and even marketing,” Jacobs says. “[The] numbers were all above what we see on the commercial radio side. The overall comparisons obviously were stark.” https://lnkd.in/edevAhBh

Investing in technical education is no longer a nice-to-have for the broadcast industry. It’s becoming essential. As technology evolves, so does the demand for engineers and technicians who understand IP workflows, cloud-based production, and emerging delivery standards. It's now more challenging than ever to find the right mix of experience, given the speed of advancement and the difficulties with training and development One of the most effective ways companies can address this challenge is by partnering with universities and colleges to support technical programmes. Offering work placements or sandwich years gives students real-world experience while giving organisations early access to developing talent. These initiatives provide companies with fresh perspectives, help teams stay innovative, and create a pipeline of engineers who are trained with industry needs in mind. For many businesses, the students they invest in become the future specialists who will tackle tomorrow’s technical challenges. Strengthening technical education isn’t just an investment in people. It’s an investment in the long-term resilience of our industry. The SIGN skills-gap briefing and BT Media & Broadcast’s analysis reinforce this point, highlighting that closer collaboration between industry and education through structured training, apprenticeships and real-world placements is essential for building a workforce equipped for modern, IT-led broadcast environments. I'm keen to hear from you, how would you address the growing skills gap in our industry?

One of the most common issues I hear in voiceover demos isn’t performance. It’s sameness. Good voices. Well recorded. Competently produced. But not offering anything you couldn’t generate quickly with a template or an AI tool. When everything sounds fine, but nothing sounds intentional, there’s no reason to remember it. Most demo rebuilds aren’t about fixing talent. They’re about clarity, contrast, and making deliberate choices that give a listener a reason to care.

Here, on set, I handled a professional-level audio workflow in the early DSLR cinema era. • in knowing how to manage signal flow, gain staging, and sync under production conditions. • I blended film set tradition (clapper slate, shoulder bag mixer) with new indie tech (Zoom recorder, DSLR). 🎬 On-Location Sound in the DSLR Revolution — On set , I worked with a Sony DSLR that had beautiful image quality… and an undesirable onboard audio. The fix? A complete location sound workflow: 🎙 Boom mic for crisp dialogue capture 🎚 Field mixer on my shoulder for real-time level control & phantom power 📼 Zoom recorder capturing the clean audio track 🎯 Clapper slate to sync audio & video in post Every take began with the iconic clap, and every scene was a balancing act between mic technique, mixer levels, and keeping the DSLR team in sync with sound. Back then, there was no “all-in-one” solution. You had to know your gear, trust your ears, and work as a tight team. It taught me that filmmaking is equal parts technical skill, improvisation, and collaboration — a lesson that still holds true today. #FilmProduction #OnLocationSound #DSLR #AudioEngineering #SoundMixing #ZoomRecorder #BoomMic #FieldMixer #MovieMaking
