That's what Jeff Glanzmann keeps for every dollar of premium he puts into his reinsurance program. Most dealers don't even know what their number is. Today on the Industry Spotlight podcast, host Sam D'Arc talks with Michael Naim, Vice President, East Division, Direct Markets at Zurich North America, and Jeff Glanzmann, Dealer Principal, Glanzmann Subaru, to talk about why that gap exists and what it actually takes to close it. What stood out: 1. The right question isn't "what's my loss ratio?" It's "what's my return on premium?" For every dollar you put in, what are you keeping? NADA says net-to-sale on the retail side runs around 4%. Jeff's reinsurance is running north of 70%. 2. Most dealers are flying blind. No dashboard. No real-time data. Just a quarterly PDF if they ask for it. Jeff ran his program that way for years. He calls it "set it and forget it." He won't go back. 3. One data insight changed the entire operation. Real-time claims data revealed too many losses hitting within the first 120 days of ownership. That led to tightening used car recon thresholds, which improved CSI, boosted sales team confidence, and protected the portfolio. 4. The biggest mistake dealers make right now: fixating on fee structure instead of results. A few dollars on admin fees is noise if you don't know what you're actually keeping. 5. Set it and forget it doesn't work in 2026. With labor rates and parts costs moving fast, if your premiums haven't kept up, your reinsurance is quietly bleeding. And you won't see it until it's too late to pivot. The full episode is live! Most insurers still absorb risk at the very end of the cycle when it has already turned into claims, errors, and exits.
