A few early 2026 observations: - watch out for the $10k/mo "latte" .. the "salary" of your "AI reports" ... $200/mo is going away? - use inductive powers to drive more formal planning and verification when building deductive systems ("programming") ... I'm seeing a lot of "overfitting" of theory-starved implementations to test cases - we MUST remain the smart one in the room, relative to the bots... whether this is framed as wisdom, responsibility, theory ownership, creative spark, sanity check, "skin in the game", "getting out in the field" etc... burn tokens on THIS quest at least as much as on "productivity enhancement" ... AI is the voice of Jor-El as we travel to earth, at least on well-trodden topics - CLI/API FTW!! When someone asks me to help them with their computer I'd rather whip up some Python or run some CLI pipelines or curl commands than mess around with their Word/Excel menus, web app, etc. AI is the same... build things that AI wants to run. I've hoped this day would come for so many decades of despising UIs 🙃 "AI helps Mom run curl" isn't far from the truth. What do you think? I'd love to hear stories from bushwacking through the early days of AI!

Tayloe Draughon liked thisTayloe Draughon liked thisRemembering Ned Bennett – Mentor, Partner, Friend This week I lost a dear friend, former business partner, and mentor – Ned Bennett. Back in the early days of optionsXpress, we were just two entrepreneur musicians trying to build something new. Jazz was always our shared language. We believed business, like music, worked best when people were free to improvise, listen, and play off each other. That mindset shaped our culture and helped us go from an idea in 2000 to Barron's Best Online Broker 3 years later. Ned embodied that spirit. He played the saxophone, I played guitar – but more importantly, he taught me that leadership wasn’t about control. It was about creating space for others to find their own voice. As he used to say, “We don’t look to people to play our horn, we look to them to play their own.” Ned’s influence reached far beyond our company. He was a generous mentor, a creative thinker, and someone who knew how to balance discipline with joy. He believed that—just like Miles Davis—perfection wasn’t the goal. The magic came from the interplay, the trust, and the willingness to explore. I’m deeply grateful for the years we built together and the lessons he left me with. I’ll miss him dearly, but his legacy lives on in the many people he inspired to “play their own tune” in business and in life. Rest in peace, Ned.
