Ever tried using 360° images in Articulate Storyline only to find a massive, ugly seam right in the middle of your "immersive" experience? 🤦‍♀️ We’ve all been there. You want to create an interactive VR environment or an escape room, but finding the right equirectangular images is a total headache. Most "360" photos look distorted or require a pricey subscription. I spent some time digging into how to source these for free (or very cheap) so you don’t have to. Use terms like "Equirectangular," "Spherical Environment Map," or "VR Compatible Panorama." ✅ The 2:1 Rule: Your aspect ratio is everything. The #1 mistake new instructional designers make: They open their authoring tool before they have a plan. SME sends you content. You get excited. You start dragging blocks into Rise or building slides in Storyline. No needs analysis. No performance objectives. No structure. The result? A 45-minute course that should’ve been 10 minutes. Content dumps disguised as “modules.” Zero behavior change. I’ve done this. Most IDs have. Here’s the 10-minute fix I use on every project now: → Ask: what should learners DO differently after this? → Write 3 performance objectives. Not learning objectives. Performance. → Cut everything that doesn’t directly support those 3 goals. That’s it. Before vs After: Before: 12 modules, 45 min, info dump, “learners will understand,” quiz at the end. After: 4 modules, 12 min, scenario-driven, “learners will identify,” practice throughout. The best course isn’t the longest one. It’s the one that changes what people do on Monday morning. Happy Friday, instructional designers & eLearning devs! I'd love to show you some of the new projects I've been working on. I haven't been as active here on LinkedIn or on YouTube because I've been deep in some focused work, but I figured it was time for an update. So, here's what I've been working on: 1. An AI-powered voice-based experience in Storyline 360. There's an AI agent that can change things in your Storyline course just from you talking to it (and it sounds super realistic). 2. An MCP server...basically an AI operating system for our business, and I think this will have big implications for the types of solutions that instructional designers will propose in the future. 3. Our big ID Project Lab course that I've been working on forever, and it's finally going live. 4. An ID Skills Assessment that I've been doing a lot of programming for; you basically complete a 30-question survey and then get an in-depth report about your strengths, skill gaps, etc., as well as relevant resources depending on where you're at. Did you know you can Vibe Code for Articulate Storyline as well? Create custom games and interactions with AI that work perfectly inside of your eLearning course? I have talked a lot about getting something you #VibeCoded into the #Rise code block but had someone ask about how to use the code inside of #Storyline so wanted to create a video walking you through how to take something from Claude #AI and use it as a fully functional page inside of Storyline. There are a couple of extra steps to do but I do hope that Storyline implements something like the Rise code block in the future where you can just copy and paste in the code or just import a zip. This however opens up a lot of possibilities still within Storyline, being able to create customizable interactions without complex triggers or logic. "Just make it engaging.” If you’ve ever worked in instructional design, you’ve heard this from a stakeholder. But here’s the problem: *“engaging”* means nothing unless it’s tied to a learning goal. ✨ True engagement isn’t flashy graphics or gamification for the sake of it. It’s relevance. It’s clarity. It’s giving learners what they need, when they need it—so they can do something *better* as a result. That means understanding your audience, mapping learning to real outcomes, and designing with purpose, not just aesthetics. I'm still amazed how often “interactive and engaging” just means “build it in Articulate Storyline.” It’s a slide tool with triggers. Accessibility takes workarounds, updates are clunky, and suddenly we’ve spent weeks producing something that’s hard to revise and easy to outgrow.
