We've added the Annual National Land Cover Database (NLCD) to the Lens Library — and the key word is *annual*. Previously, NLCD data came out every few years. Now, with the Annual NLCD developed by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), you get a snapshot of US land cover for every year back to 2000. That's 24+ years of consistent, annual land change data, classifying the entire country into 16 land cover types. Most geospatial platforms serve raster data the way they did in 2015: a tile server sits in front of imagery, slices it on request, and you pay for compute whether anyone's looking at the map or not. We didn't build that into GroundPulse. The data layer is PMTiles and Cloud-Optimized GeoTIFFs. PMTiles are single-file tile archives with built-in spatial indexing. No tile server. The browser requests byte ranges directly from cloud storage. Serving tiles to zero users costs zero. Serving tiles to a thousand users is still almost zero — it's storage egress, not compute. COGs do the same thing for raster analysis. Internal tiling and overviews mean you can pull a 50km corridor of displacement data from a multi-gigabyte raster without downloading the whole file. Most platforms won't migrate to this because they already have the tile server, the team that maintains it, and an architecture that assumes server-side rendering. The old way works fine — it just costs more and scales worse. Three things this changes for an operator: - Cost scales with usage, not with deployment. An idle deployment is free. - Field use without cell coverage works, because PMTiles cache locally. -Data portability is built in. COGs open in any GIS tool. We're not locking operators into a proprietary format to view their own data. The Dallas market is shifting 🏡 Inventory is up more than 50% compared to last year in many areas, giving buyers more options and leverage than we’ve seen in a while. About two-thirds of homes are now selling under list price, and the median value in Dallas has dipped around 4–5%. But it’s not all slow down. DATA > EMOTION 🏡 Texas Housing Market: Stronger Than It Looks. Now don’t let the economists in New York or them spreadsheet-slingers out in D.C. fool you, out here in Texas, the housing market isn’t crying, it’s cooking. You wouldn’t know it from some of the national headlines, but in Texas, things are moving and fast. New home sales across the state surged in May, hitting their highest level of the year. That’s not opinion, that’s straight from the data in the HomesUSA.com report. 📈 Statewide sales jumped 8.6% 📍 Austin led with a 13.8% increase 📍 DFW was up 9.6% 📍 Houston rose 6.9% 📍 San Antonio climbed 6.1% So while some folks are focused on "flattening pending sales," what we're seeing might just be a pause before the next leg up. Prices are stable, sales-to-list ratios are strong, and active listings are rising not in a panic, but in a way that’s bringing balance back to the market. And let’s be real: when Dallas-Fort Worth drops a few thousand off the average sales price, that’s not a sign of weakness, it’s a window of opportunity. This market isn't topping out. It’s just not following the script. The real story here? Buyers are showing up. Builders are closing deals. And the data, once you look past the noise tells a story of resilience, not retreat. Texas is doing what Texas does: finding a way to win.

The geospatial industry needs to stop going to geospatial conferences. FULL EFFIN' STOP We’ve reached the point where half of us are just 3 raccoons in a group chat trying to seem like a global industry. Every event is the same effin orbit: satellite companies talking to satellite companies, GIS vendors talking to GIS vendors, everyone saying “AI-enabled geospatial insights” like they’re casting a corporate spell from a dying mall food court. And somewhere in the middle of it all is the annual ritual sacrifice of personality in pursuit of NGA dollars. Entire companies sanding themselves down into beige compliance pudding because they think sounding operationally sterile is a strategy. Nobody can say anything interesting. Nobody can take a stance. Every deck looks like it was written by a defense contractor microwave manual. The result? A sector terrified of being memorable, or as unique as we can be. Meanwhile, the actual centers of gravity, insurance, finance, logistics, climate adaptation, utilities, banking, supply chains, infrastructure, defense, operational risk, are somewhere else entirely. Not in Northern GD Virginia And most geospatial people never go there . Because too much of this industry is still addicted to being “the geospatial industry” instead of becoming indispensable inside other industries. Nobody outside our bubble gives a flying F about: * your sensor stack * your tile server * your ontology debate • your annual standards panel attended by 14 exhausted men named Chris, all with the same goatee, who argue about what pinecone was used to brew the IPA at the two-ticket drink social. They care about operational pain. Can you reduce uncertainty? Can you price risk? Can you help move money? Can you identify failing infrastructure? Can you explain why one neighborhood collapses while another survives? That’s the real game. Geography is not a vertical. It’s an underlying condition of reality. Running through every GD industry on the planet. And the people winning right now are not the ones screaming GeoAI the loudest on LinkedIn. They’re the translators. The ones embedding themselves into climate, capital markets, insurance, adaptation, resilience, and operations. Because the future of geospatial will not be decided at a geospatial conference. It’ll be decided in rooms where nobody knows what a shapefile is. #geospatial #confernce #ESRIUC
