I had no idea so many SEO companies would hate my software AI Trust Signals… but they do...and not for the reasons I expected. Turns out, there are a lot of SEO companies doing bad work and not being honest with their clients. And when their clients finally ask hard questions, things get...well...interesting. Here’s a recent example (true story): A lady heard me speak, ran her website through AI Trust Signals, and her scores came back rough. She forwarded the results to her SEO company and asked for an explanation. Their response? “It’s a pile of $hit.” 💩 That was their technical analysis. (seriously, I'm not kidding) But it also triggered alarm bells for her. So she started digging. Eight weeks later, here’s what she uncovered: • GDPR violations • Her entire e-commerce section not visible to Google Shopping • Falsified SEO reporting • A laundry list of mistakes no competent agency should ever miss Her words to me: “You name it… it happened.” She fired the agency and is now fixing what was an extremely broken website. Local SEO PSA for all you biz owners freaking out this weekend because the local map rank tracker is showing you losing ground as you checked it for the millionth time this month. All of these grid rank tools will almost always show different Local Pack rankings, even when you use two different tools for the same query at exactly the same time. There are so many factors influencing these rankings at any given time (ip address of the searcher, query, personalization, time of day, etc.) that they are almost always going to be "wrong", or at least often won't match up with what you are seeing, regardless of how you search. Search Darren Shaw's feed for when he answers questions about rank tracking accuracy. He's like a broken record, but his tune is spot on.

Most agencies obsess over acquisition. “How do we get more leads?” “How do we close more clients?” “How do we scale faster?” And don’t get me wrong, acquisition matters. But here’s the real truth: The agencies that win don’t win because of acquisition. They win because of retention. Think about it: Keeping a client for 12+ months is worth 10x more than constantly replacing churned clients. Longer retention = higher lifetime value. Higher lifetime value = more referrals. More referrals = easier sales. Retention compounds. When I shifted my agency’s focus from “signing more clients” to “keeping clients longer,” everything changed. Our revenue grew more stable. Our margins increased. Our sales cycle shortened. And ironically, we signed more clients, because happy clients talk. So here’s the mindset shift: Stop obsessing over lead gen. Start obsessing over client results. Because when you keep clients, scaling becomes inevitable.

I've been talking a lot lately about how I'm not bullish on SEO as a service. The fact is SEO is not a great fit for most businesses anymore, and it's impacting your pipeline. Yes, there is still plenty of demand for SEO services, but a lot of those businesses are unqualified and their wasting your time. That manifests with you creating proposals for leads that can't afford you, spending hours on discovery calls with tire-kickers, and getting ghosted after sending quotes. Here's my agency's process for pre-qualifying leads that has completely eliminated pricing objections: 1. No contact forms or general emails - force leads through a structured booking system with qualifying questions 2. Ask directly about budget: "If we can show you the roadmap to more leads, are you willing to invest at least $X per month?" 3. Review leads before calls - cancel immediately if they don't meet criteria 4. On discovery calls that slip through, be willing to end the call within 15 minutes if they're not qualified 5. Before doing any analysis work, directly state your pricing: "Our services for this will be around $X per month. Does that work for you?" The key is creating multiple checkpoints throughout your sales process instead of surprising people with pricing at the end.
