Guillermo Saenz shared thisAsk most people what Goodwill of Colorado does, and they'll say "thrift stores." Sit in the room I sat in last night, and you'd never say that again. The annual dinner brought together team members, program participants, and partners from across Colorado; the people who carry the mission in ways most people never see from the outside. A few months into this role, I'm still struck by the same thing: The work is powerful. The people doing it are remarkable. The impact is wider than any one person can see from any one seat. Last night was a chance to celebrate and honor our team members, participants, and partners. Every day, I am more amazed by this work. Honored to be a part of it.

Guillermo Saenz shared thisFor 30 days, I tracked every 15 minutes of my life on a spreadsheet. Not because I had the time. Because I didn't. I had started a new role at Goodwill, finishing a research project for nonprofits, trying to write a book, and telling myself I was "multitasking" through all of it. The spreadsheet told a different story. Multi-tasking is mostly an illusion. What I was actually doing was slicing my focus. Jumping from one thing to another and then back again. All that jumping wasn't making me faster. It made me feel fragmented. It decreased my productivity and, worse, it was killing my peace of mind. I realized that I was only doing one thing at a time anyway. Might as well own that instead of spending so much energy shifting gears. Here's what I saw in my data: I was cramming activities into 15-minute blocks for the sake of "productivity." Checking email between meetings. Scrolling between calls. Squeezing in tasks that looked important but weren't. The blocks don't lie. I spent 37% of my waking hours on things that felt urgent but didn't move anything forward. Emails. Errands. Reactive logistics. I was in constant motion and exhausted by dinner, but I couldn't point to the one thing that actually mattered. Meanwhile, the book I want to write? Five hours in 16 days. The people I love? They got whatever was left after the noise. So I started doing two things differently. First, I stopped pretending I could split focus and started choosing what gets the whole block. One activity. One zone. Fifteen minutes of honesty. I'm still in the middle of this. Still catching myself splitting focus between things that feel urgent and things that actually matter. Still learning the difference between motion and progress. But the 15-minute blocks don't let me lie about it anymore.

Guillermo Saenz shared thisNonprofit monthly donor programs are the backbone of building sustainable fundraising. Set up a recurring gift, build a loyal base, and fund your mission for years to come. The model is simple. The results aren't. I've spent months deep in the research on monthly donor programs, subscription psychology, and artist fan clubs. Not because I needed more fundraising jargon in my life, but because something kept feeling off with how nonprofits were approaching their monthly donor programs. We say "community", but mean a recurring credit card charge. We say "retention", but we mean we haven't figured out why people leave. We say "stewardship", but mean a receipt and a sentence we're proud of. Operational failure gets labeled as donor indifference. Burnout gets patched with better messaging instead of better systems. A recurring payment gets confused for a relationship. Over the next few weeks, I'm going to share some uncomfortable questions about monthly giving. Not polished answers. Just the things I can't unsee anymore.

Guillermo Saenz shared thisColorado has a way of cutting through the noise. Sometimes it happens on a trail, when your mind finally quiets down. Sometimes it happens on a bike ride, when the road opens up and so do your thoughts. Sometimes it happens in a wild, beautiful place that reminds you public lands are not an abstract policy conversation. They are part of how we live. Part of how we connect. Part of what makes Colorado, Colorado. That’s why I’m proud to be part of the host committee with the Conservation Lands Foundation for Growing Community Power for Colorado’s Public Lands, an evening about the possibilities, progress, and power of community-led conservation. We’ll hear from leaders helping shape that future, including Tom Gougeon, President of the Gates Family Foundation, Amber Clark, Executive Director of Dolores River Boating Advocates, and Chris Hill, CEO of the Conservation Lands Foundation. What I love most about this event is that it goes beyond conservation as a concept. It gets to something deeper: belonging, stewardship, and shared responsibility. The future of public lands should not be shaped only by policy or politics. It should also be shaped by the people and communities who know these places, love these places, and refuse to let them be taken for granted. I’d love for you to join us. Guillermo Saenz shared thisConfession: before joining Goodwill of Colorado I thought I understood what Goodwill did. Turns out, I understood the storefront, not the story. Like a lot of people, I associated Goodwill with thrift stores, donations, and retail that does some good in the community. And yes, that’s part of it. But five weeks into this role, I can already say my understanding was way too small. What many people don’t realize is that the retail side helps support a much broader mission. Goodwill of Colorado powers programs that serve people across the state, including AgrAbility, which helps farmers, ranchers, and agricultural workers with disabilities, injuries, or chronic health conditions stay independent and productive. This is the part of Goodwill most of us never see. We often miss the larger engine behind it all: programs designed to help people keep working, keep going, and keep their dignity intact when life gets hard. Because for many farmers and ranchers, work is not just a job. It’s identity. It’s family. It’s purpose. It’s legacy. I’m still learning. A lot. But one of the biggest lessons so far is this: Sometimes we think we understand an organization because we recognize its storefront. But the real story is often happening far beyond the front door. #GoodwillColorado #CommunityImpact #AgrAbility #Colorado #NonprofitLeadership #PurposeDrivenWorkAgrAbility helps Colorado rancher continue the job he lovesAgrAbility helps Colorado rancher continue the job he loves

Guillermo Saenz shared this"WARNING. DANGEROUS DROP AHEAD. STAY AWAY FROM CLIFF EDGE." Good. Every edge worth walking toward has a sign like this. A reasonable warning. A hand pointing back toward the middle. But here’s what the middle costs you: the view. The trick isn’t ignoring the sign. It’s asking what staying back actually costs you.

Guillermo Saenz shared thisThis week, I joined Goodwill of Colorado as Director of Customer Experience and Marketing. I've been around long enough to recognize when a career starts revealing itself as a calling. Music. The Integer Group. Arrow. Mi Casa Resource Center. Every stop taught me something about culture, commerce, and what it means to build experiences that actually matter to people. This is where it was all pointing. Yesterday I toured the Goodwill Possibilities and Voyages campus for the first time. I wasn't prepared for what I walked into. Possibilities is a 14,000-square-foot community, a town built entirely to help adults with developmental disabilities develop life skills, build confidence, and practice independence in a safe, real-world environment. Voyages is an adult day program for seniors, designed not just for supervision, but for discovery. Daily adventures. Social connection. A carefully built world that restores confidence and transforms what aging can look like. I walked out of the campus moved in a way I didn't expect. And that's only two of our programs. This is what Goodwill of Colorado actually is. More than 90 cents of every dollar spent at our retail stores fund programs like these. The store is the mission in action. And programs like Possibilities and Voyages are what the mission makes possible. More to come!

Guillermo Saenz shared thisMost people think the subscription economy started with Netflix. It started with a book and a mailbox. In 1926. And it started because Harry Scherman loved what you and I love — walking into a bookstore and discovering something that stops you cold. Most Americans couldn't do that. No bookstore within miles. No way in. So he mailed people a book. Once a month. Curated by experts who asked one question: what does this person need to read next? The Book of the Month Club wasn't a book business. It was an access business. And that distinction built an empire. What I've learned from this is that sometimes the best founders don't create the product. They redesign who gets to have it. Scherman didn't ask "how do we sell more books?" He asked, "Who isn't in the room, and why?"

Guillermo Saenz reacted on thisGuillermo Saenz reacted on thisI've been a little quiet on here lately, but for the best reason: I GOT MARRIED! On April 25th, I married the love of my life, Grant, surrounded by all of our family and friends. The last few weeks have been all about soaking up that newlywed bubble and settling into this exciting new chapter together. And honestly? I've loved every second of it. But while I'm still riding the post-wedding high, I'm also feeling more energized than ever to get back to it — because we're building some incredibly exciting things at Chezie, and I cannot wait to start sharing more with you all in the coming weeks.

Guillermo Saenz reacted on thisMost people turn the page on a new chapter by leaving. Every so often, you get to write one without closing the book. Cinco de Mayo was that kind of day. Surrounded by our partners — Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, Consume & Create™, Citizen HKS, Inc. Perkins&Will, and Nathan Luna Roofing — we gathered around a single, life-changing question: What kind of ancestor will you become? We unveiled Latino Cultural Arts Center forthcoming brand, the Khipu-inspired donor wall that honors our past, present, and future, and the furniture that will make the building feel like home. To the collaborators who became lifelong friends in this process — Jarrett Andrés Hardy, Joshua Wills, Justin Gilmore, Armando Somoza, MBA, MFA, CPC, Bobby LeFebre. Grateful beyond words.Guillermo Saenz reacted on thisSNEAK PEAK - Latino Cultural Arts Center “What type of ancestor do you want to become?” Last night I joined our #HKSDenver team for “An Evening of Partnership: Cinco de Mayo with LCAC” to celebrate the next chapter of the Latino Cultural Arts Center: a first look at the new LCAC brand, the HKS‑designed Khipu‑inspired donor installation, and the furnishings that will help this space feel like home. Through Citizen HKS, HKS’s public‑interest and community impact initiative that channels our design skills into mission‑driven projects, our team is shaping LCAC’s donor installation as a field of “living threads” that honors not just financial gifts, but the stories, labor, and legacy behind them. Citizen HKS is one of the reasons I am so proud to be at HKS. Seeing our firm show up for community in this way is exactly what makes this the kind of workplace I want to be part of. The heart-warming takeaways: > The way two global architecture firms, HKS, Inc. and Perkins&Will, who usually compete, truly collaborated with LCAC on something so important for the community. > The power of the new LCAC brand and that simple, brave question, inviting all of us to think beyond a “project” and into legacy. > How every design element, from the donor installation to the furnishings to the brand, is being created to welcome people in, carry their stories, and make this place feel like a true home for the community. For me, this work is about the kind of footprint we leave in Denver: the spaces that invite people in, the communities that feel seen and supported, and the ways our design decisions ripple forward into someone else’s future. Guillermo Saenz reacted on thisGuillermo Saenz reacted on thisIntroducing my first Cryptid Theory apprenticeship, Colton Canava part ✌🏽 Now that school is out, I had the opportunity to show my son, first hand, my current mural project in Dallas. TBH he’s mostly hanging out, sketching, Drawing and minecrafting, but he’s learning a bit while he’s here as well. I remember going to work with my dad when I was growing up. He worked at a small theater in Wichita Falls called Backdoor Theater, and we helped him run the buffet line during the dinner shows. When I was his age I thought it was the coolest thing in the world. Luckily I didn’t grow up to run the same buffet line. 😅 But I did grow an appreciation for the arts…beyond my art of course. My goal for my son…as well as myself…is to be “more than an artist.” I want to teach him to run a business, and think bigger. Of course, in order to teach that, I’ve got of learning to do myself. I’m in moving in the right direction. #fathersonday #muralist

Who better to help present the check than veteran cornerback Pat Surtain II? He spent time visiting patients, bringing them smiles and excitement. Thank you, Pat, for your leadership on and off the field!

We often frame sponsorship as a two party agreement. The property and the sponsor. But the value of any partnership is defined by a third party who never appears on the contract. The fan. If an activation interrupts the fan experience, the investment weakens. If it adds value, the entire system strengthens. This 2m06s video breaks down why fan first design is not optional. It is what makes sponsorship work. The full article linked in the comments. Lumency

When mission, vision, and core values are clear, momentum builds quickly as storytelling flows, awareness efforts align, and messaging gains clarity and confidence. When brand foundations are shaky, everything else feels scattered. I’ve seen it happen: a company wants to be this and also that. They mix messages, hoping something sticks. The outcome is campaigns that don’t feel authentic to the audience, or even to the team creating them. That’s why we always go back to brand DNA. With that foundation in place, every campaign has a stronger center of gravity. What’s the first step you take when aligning brand and marketing strategy?

I have attended enough trade shows to know the difference between noise and growth. In Hispanic marketing, visibility alone is not a strategy. Retail math, household influence, structured data capture, and operational follow-through are what protect credibility internally. We wrote this checklist because too many brands approach trade shows as cultural presence moments instead of performance environments. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ghvPCKme If you are responsible for growth, retailer relationships, or defending budget, this framework may help you ask better questions before your next activation. Applause fades quickly. Velocity compounds. Would love to hear how others are redefining trade show ROI in multicultural markets.

Daily AI use may now be one of the strongest predictors of consumer optimism in America. That should fundamentally change how brands think about communications, media, and visibility. People who use AI daily increasingly: * feel more informed * move faster * research differently * make decisions conversationally * trust answer engines as part of daily life The implication for brands is massive: If your company is invisible inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, you may increasingly be invisible during the formation of consumer confidence and purchase intent. We are moving from: “search behavior” to: “AI-mediated decision behavior.” That changes PR, SEO, content strategy, reputation management, and even brand trust itself. The companies that win the next five years won’t just rank well on Google. They’ll become: * retrievable * cited * summarized * recommended * trusted by AI systems And that requires a completely different communications architecture. Interesting research and framing here from Everything-PR. https://lnkd.in/eXQmMfb2

VPs of Marketing as spokespeople and influencers? They’re already the voice of the brand internally. They shape its story, define its positioning, and guide how it shows up in the market. So why shouldn’t they also be visible externally, in stores, as credible, influential voices for the brand and the business? https://lnkd.in/es7z2vzD

Great conversations coming out of In-House Agency Forum (IHAF) this year! So many smart voices sharing what’s working. No gating. No consulting walls. Just people trying to make things better. The smartest in-house teams know production isn’t a service lane, it’s the system that drives creative velocity. And one thing that keeps proving true: the fast, smooth projects aren’t the ones with the biggest budgets. They’re the ones where everyone knows who decides, early. The hardest part of this work is balancing operations and creativity. Too much process, and ideas stall. Too little, and chaos wins. The teams getting it right are the ones designing for both discipline and freedom in equal measure. #CreativeOperations #CreativeProduction #InHouseAgencies #MarketingOperations

Associations sit at the crossroads of knowledge, advocacy, and industry change. In my latest piece, I argue that AI can accelerate insight, but it can’t originate the perspective that only your members possess. For association leaders, that means innovation won’t come from the model—it comes from how you use it to surface the right conversations and move the industry forward. https://bit.ly/3LxQ8Oo #Associations #AI #ThoughtLeadership #MemberValue #IndustryInsights

Guarding Against Undifferentiated Slop When everything gravitates towards the mean, everything starts to look, feel, and sound the same. Anyone working for a brand has the responsibility to uncover, amplify, and protect the things that make it differentiated. The art and science of this process is now more needed than ever, and it goes well beyond brand guidelines, brand libraries (sorry Pencil), and brand books. Knowing your brand, inside and out, and in the tiny details, going back through the past to understand the why, and being able to challenge your internal decision-making against the brand, may not matter now, but it will. A way to start thinking about this could be to try answering the questions posed by this mini-strategic audit.

The landscape of sports marketing is shifting -- and women athletes are leading the way. Athletes today aren’t just endorsing brands; they’re building communities, telling their own stories, and creating culture. Women in sports, in particular, are turning necessity into opportunity: sharing their personalities, their journeys, and their expertise off the court has made them multi-hyphenate creators -- and powerful partners for brands. The lesson for marketers is clear: it’s not about follower counts or celebrity -- it’s about fit, authenticity, and real engagement. The best partnerships are co-created, rooted in the athlete’s narrative, and add value to the fan experience rather than interrupt it. As women’s sports gain visibility, brands that meet athletes where they are, and help tell their stories, won’t just sponsor moments, they’ll shape culture.
