Rob Soni liked thisRob Soni liked thisBetween AI compute demand, industrial electrification and Europe's push for sovereignty, energy has become one of the most strategic deep tech battlegrounds right now. Here is what the ecosystem actually looks like. REPowerEU mobilised close to €300 billion, and by 2024, 47% of EU electricity came from renewables for the first time, with solar overtaking coal and wind beating gas. These are structural market shifts, not policy wins on paper. They have created one of the most serious deep tech investment landscapes in Europe. The capital is responding. European energy storage startups have raised €2.14 billion in total equity, nearly half of it in the last three years. — Future Energy Ventures closed a €205 million Fund II. — SET Ventures a €200 million Fund IV. — Terra One raised €150 million for grid-scale batteries in Germany alone. What makes this ecosystem compelling is the convergence across the stack: grid software, storage, power electronics, hydrogen, and industrial systems, all moving inside a regulatory environment that is finally pulling in the same direction as the technology. Rob Soni liked thisRob Soni liked thislets not forget EDMs. CSignum is already recognised as a robust and reliable wireless solution for Section 82 CSO monitoring. But there is another growing opportunity within EDM monitoring itself. EDM monitoring for CSO compliance is widely understood. The obligation is clear, detect when a combined sewer is discharging, record it, and report it. CSO EDM chambers are harsh environments. Whether the sensor is mounted above the weir crest detecting spill onset, or submerged in the downstream chamber confirming discharge flow, the cable connecting that sensor to the kiosk is exposed to conditions that cause ongoing problems. Corroded connectors; Flooded conduits; Failed cable glands; Buried runs damaged by ground movement. Every fault means a site visit and every site visit has a cost. The challenges are well documented across the industry, and they are multifaceted. Difficult access, confined space requirements, and the physical demands of wastewater environments all play a part. But the cable comes up consistently as a recurring source of operational friction. As the regulatory focus on CSO discharge frequency and duration intensifies, and as networks push toward denser and more distributed EDM coverage, the traditional wired architecture becomes harder and more expensive to scale. Eliminating the cable changes the equation, not just for new installations, but for the retrofit sites, deep chambers, and difficult assets where wired infrastructure has always been the hardest part of the job. #Wastewater #CSO #EDM #WaterIndustry #SmartWater

Rob Soni liked thisRob Soni liked thisThe AI race is no longer just about who has the smartest model. It’s about who delivers the best intelligence per dollar. China’s DeepSeek just released an open-source model that many developers say is approaching GPT-5.5 and Claude Opus-level performance in coding, reasoning, and agentic workflows — at a fraction of the cost. For context: • OpenAI and Anthropic models can cost 10–20x more per token • DeepSeek’s newer V4 models are reportedly priced as low as ~$3.48 per million output tokens vs ~$25–$30 for leading US models. That changes the economics of AI adoption completely. DeepSeek was founded by Liang Wenfeng, a Chinese entrepreneur and hedge fund founder. The company became globally known after proving that frontier-level AI could be trained and deployed far more efficiently than Silicon Valley assumed. What they’re especially good at: • Reasoning models • Coding performance • Open-weight / open-source deployment • Cost-efficient inference • Large context windows • Enterprise-scale AI at lower infrastructure cost And it’s not just DeepSeek. Chinese LLMs like Qwen, Kimi, GLM and others are pushing aggressively on price-performance while US companies continue dominating the frontier in reliability, ecosystem, multimodal capability and enterprise tooling. The reality is: This is no longer “US AI vs China AI.” For businesses, the real question is: 👉 Which model solves the problem best? 👉 Which one integrates fastest? 👉 Which one delivers the best ROI? 👉 Which one makes commercial sense at scale? Most companies in the future won’t use ONE model. They’ll route tasks dynamically: * premium models for high-stakes reasoning * cheaper open-source models for scale * specialized models for coding, research, support, or automation AI is becoming a utility layer. And in utilities, cost-performance wins markets. Sign up at 10xme.biz for a free AI diagnostic & newsletters / follow 10Xme on LinkedIn to learn more about AI.

Rob Soni liked thisRob Soni liked thisSubsurface ocean monitoring had an engineering challenge. Getting data from depth to a surface buoy is harder than it looks, not because of a lack of innovation, but because the near surface ocean environment is genuinely hostile to every conventional transmission medium. Cables are subject to cyclic fatigue from wave-induced loading, one of the most documented failure modes in oceanographic mooring engineering. NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) have all published on it. Acoustic transmission struggles in exactly the same zone. Near surface turbulence, bubble entrainment, and buoy platform motion degrade signal propagation to the point of intermittency. Peer reviewed research confirms that surface gravity waves and near surface air bubbles decorrelate acoustic signals within seconds. The buoy environment is precisely where acoustics are under most stress. The result is an industry wide impasse. Not for want of trying, but because the physics of the near surface ocean environment creates a different constraint for each transmission method. At CSignum, we have spent years developing a technology that transmits unimpaired through those conditions. Our patented Electromagnetic Field Signaling works irrespective of air bubbles and turbidity, requires no wire in the data path, and is compatible with any mooring configuration - chain, wire rope, or synthetic. A modem on the anchor chain. Sensors attached at depth. Data wirelessly to the buoy. No conductor in the failure zone; robust transmission. If you work in ocean monitoring, aquaculture, water utilities, or offshore environmental compliance - I'd welcome a conversation. #OceanHealth #MarineMonitoring #UnderwaterIoT #EMFS #CSignum #OffshoreEnergy #Aquaculture #Subsurface

The 2025 overhaul of the BEAD program has reshaped the broadband landscape in ways that are still unfolding. With the introduction of the "Benefit of the Bargain" round and the shift toward a technology-neutral policy, broadband deployment now sits at the intersection of infrastructure, regulatory flexibility, and capital strategy. For investors and operators alike, this moment calls for careful interpretation. The following 90 days will be less about predictions and more about precision. At Stefanov Capital, we advise leaders, investors, and operators on translating these federal shifts into executable capital strategies. Our focus is on: -Where BEAD rules are reshaping M&A dynamics -How regulatory signals are reshaping valuations -What constitutes a bankable strategy amid permitting volatility We are not only participating in the broadband ecosystem but also helping to define the strategy. The telecom industry is quietly entering its most important transition in decades. For years, operators competed on coverage, spectrum, and bandwidth. Connectivity was the product. That era is ending: We are moving from the Data Era into the Intelligence Era. AI is no longer just a software conversation. It is becoming infrastructure and infrastructure looks very familiar to telecom leaders. AI needs: • ultra-low latency • distributed compute • trusted local infrastructure • always-on connectivity In other words, AI needs networks. Telecom assets that were once seen as commoditized, towers, fiber routes, central offices, spectrum, edge locations, are suddenly strategic again. The network itself is evolving into a distributed cloud. The real shift is this, operators are no longer limited to selling connectivity to users, they can host intelligence for industries, governments, and entire digital economies. We already saw a preview during the VAS era, operators enabled services on top of connectivity. Now the opportunity is exponentially bigger: → Edge AI platforms → Sovereign AI infrastructure → Enterprise AI-as-a-Service → Private networks powering automation → Aviation and Air-to-Ground becoming national digital infrastructure layers Governments increasingly treat AI like spectrum or energy, a strategic national asset. And trusted local infrastructure partners will matter more than ever. The future telecom KPI will not be ARPU. It will be compute density, latency zones, and digital ecosystem control. The strategic question for every operator today is simple: Are we selling connectivity to AI… or becoming the infrastructure where AI lives? Those who move early will redefine their role in the digital economy. Those who wait risk becoming wholesale capacity providers in someone else’s platform. #Telecom #AIInfrastructure #DigitalTransformation #EdgeComputing #A2G #AviationConnectivity #5G #FutureOfNetworks #AI #Telecommunications

"Today, the BEAD program has a strong fiber bias, which pushes funding to expensive individual deployment projects which burn through funds that could support many more families for whom broadband is available but not affordable. In some places, states are spending $77,000 per household to run fiber to remote areas. To put that in perspective: the annual cost of helping a low-income household afford a broadband plan is $360. That means for every one of those high-cost fiber installations, we are giving up more than 200 years of affordability support." #broadband #internet https://lnkd.in/eN6gf3JQ

EchoStar’s Spectrum Flip Rumors of a potential Verizon acquisition of EchoStar’s AWS-3 licences highlight the final stage of a decade-long strategy. Between 2012 and 2021, Dish–EchoStar spent roughly $26 billion acquiring spectrum meant to power a fourth national 5G network. That network never fully materialized. By 2025, EchoStar has sold or is selling licences for roughly $50 billion, generating an approximate 91 percent return. The implied internal rate of return over the holding period is roughly 7 to 8 percent per year. Had they built the network, they would have needed another $30–40 billion in CapEx, with high operational risk. Carriers like AT&T, SpaceX, and potentially Verizon gained spectrum predictably, without bidding against competitors. That predictability came at the expense of the public treasury, raising a broader equity question about who benefits from scarce spectrum. This strategy also illustrates the notion of spectrum as an economic option. EchoStar invested just enough to satisfy the FCC, preserving the option to sell when market conditions were favorable. The payoff demonstrates how illiquid regulatory assets can be transformed into financial windfalls, even without network deployment. The network ambition is over. Boost Mobile is now a thin-margin MVNO. What remains is cash and a stark lesson: strategic optionality can be more valuable than operational execution when the underlying asset is scarce and regulated.

With Verizon signing a definitive commercial deal with AST SpaceMobile, all three major US operators now have a satellite partner for direct-to-cell services. This move completes the battle lines for the next era of ubiquitous connectivity, and the competitive dynamics are fascinating. T-Mobile US, partnered with the satellite-rich SpaceX, it is already live with a service and is cleverly using it to attract rivals' customers. Regardless of the merits of this, it puts immense pressure on both AT&T and Verizon, who have now aligned in a high stakes bet on AST SpaceMobile. The critical bottleneck for this alliance, however, is infrastructure deployment. While T-Mobile's partner has thousands of satellites in orbit, AST SpaceMobile currently has a handful, and their ability to rapidly deploy their constellation will be the single biggest factor in determining their partners' ability to compete. The partnerships have been signed, and the strategies are in place. The race now isn't just about marketing but about getting satellites into space and delivering a service that is reliable enough for consumers to value. The next 18 months will be absolutely critical in the US direct-to-cell market. #Satellite #DirectToCell #5G #ASTSpaceMobile #Verizon #TMobile #ATT #Starlink #SpaceTech #USTelco #Connectivity
