Romain Sigot liked thisRomain Sigot liked thisMy op-ed in the The Wall Street Journal, out today: The world isn't running out of oil. It's running out of food. The headlines are all about energy prices. But the real crisis from the #Hormuz closure is happening somewhere most people aren't looking: fertilizer. Here's what's actually going on: → ~50% of globally traded urea transits the Strait of Hormuz → QAFCO — the world's largest urea production site — is offline → Spring planting in the Northern Hemisphere is happening right now → Fertilizer not applied in April cannot be retroactively applied in July I spoke with an Australian grain grower last week. He has access to 15% of the urea he needs for planting. Weeks away. No viable source to fill the gap. That conversation is being replicated from the Punjab to the Po Valley to the Cerrado. Our base case at Helios AI: global #foodprices 12–18% above pre-crisis baseline by end of 2026 — with structural pressure into 2027. The strait will reopen. But the food system clock doesn't reset when it does. The fuse was lit in February. The harvest damage is already locked in. ** Read the full #WSJ op-ed (in the #comments).**

Grief has a way of bringing clarity. I have always put family first, and what became clear to me is simple: my two boys need more of me right now than a full-time operating role allows. With the support of senior leaders across the firm, Jamie Dimon, Marianne Lake and Jenn Piepszak, I will transition out of my day-to-day responsibilities as Chief Product Officer for Chase and into a role as Senior Advisor to the firm. In this capacity, I will continue to support key priorities and remain deeply invested in our long-term success. This was not a decision I took lightly. I care deeply about this organization, our customers and the work we do. Leadership requires alignment between your values and how you spend your time. At this stage, that alignment means creating more space for family while continuing to contribute in a different capacity. Over the past 12 years, I’ve had the privilege of serving the firm as Global Chief Information Security Officer, Chief Information Officer for Chase and Chief Product Officer. Each role brought meaningful challenges and opportunities. What I will remember most are the partnerships built under pressure, the debates that sharpened decisions, and the relationships formed across teams and geographies, including many memorable trips to India. Our strength has always been our people, and I know the team will continue to accomplish extraordinary things. For those earlier in their careers, I will leave you with this. Focus less on titles and more on impact. Stay close to customers and to the data. Invest in relationships, especially when it is difficult. For all of us, remember that culture is shaped every day by the standards we uphold and the behaviors we reinforce. It takes years to build and can be lost surprisingly quickly. Do not lose sight of what matters outside of work. Careers are long. Life is fragile. Make room for both excellence and humanity. I am deeply grateful for the trust placed in me, for the resilience of this organization, and for what we have accomplished together. This is not an ending, but an evolution, and I am proud of what we have built.

Back to the mics. Today I’m excited to open a new chapter with the first episode of Humans of Asterion, a series of conversations with the investors and builders tackling deep, structural challenges within the Asterion Ventures ecosystem. And I couldn’t have hoped for a better opening guest than Patricia Apostol, CTO and co-founder of Bubble Robotics. Patricia worked at NASA, building robots for space exploration. She’s now applying that same engineering discipline to a frontier that is much closer, and still largely overlooked: the ocean. “The ocean has 30 times the carbon-capture potential compared to the same area on land. By 2040, the areas to monitor will be 1,000 times bigger,” she told me. And yet, we still inspect offshore infrastructure with boats, divers, and narrow weather windows - tools that simply don’t match the scale of what’s at stake. Bubble proposes a shift in mindset: instead of visiting underwater assets occasionally, we should live alongside them, through resident autonomous robots capable of continuous monitoring. We talked about: - space engineering applied to the ocean - why offshore energy, climate and security can no longer be separated - what it takes to build a deeptech company critical to Europe’s future The episode is now live. Link in the comments. (And if this resonates, their round remains open for a few more weeks. You can reach out via DM.) Next episodes continue this journey with Philippe Berland, CEO of EverDye, and Alex Haag, CEO of the Franco-German deeptech Futurail. For me, this podcast is also a return to long-form interviews - and I’m genuinely happy to be back in this format.

My colleague Brookfield Private Equity CEO Anuj Ranjan's recent Reuters Open Interest op-ed outlines that the AI revolution will be written in nuts and bolts - inside factories and supply chains, not just in code. For us, this is roll-up your sleeves work in real assets in the real economy. AI is a force multiplier - but only when it's embedded into uptime, productivity, demand planning and supply chain resilience. Owning essential industrial businesses is the start. The real value is built through hands-on operational transformation – modernizing, digitizing and executing at scale. https://lnkd.in/erx_xWxw This article was originally published in Reuters Open Interest (ROI)

A sharp start-of-year note from Mitch Berlin on what leadership looks like in 2026: growth through uncertainty. He connects the dots between the M&A rebound, enterprise-wide transformation, and the next wave of AI value creation, then lands on a practical takeaway for boards and CEOs: stay flexible, keep momentum, and build resilience while pursuing expansion.

Don't sleep on Asia... or Europe. Private equity in these regions outperformed U.S. public benchmarks in 2025, with Europe offering a lower-risk profile. While U.S. private equity remains the strongest absolute performer, we expect allocations outside of the U.S. to grow. https://gag.gl/2xtBJJ

At JPM this year, Averin Capital co-hosted "The Opening Bell: Innovator's Breakfast" with Nasdaq, alongside our partners KPMG, Latham & Watkins, and Kranz Consulting. What stood out across the best discussions in the room: 🧠 AI is assumed, not differentiated 🏥 Distribution and regulatory posture are the real gating factors 💰 Capital alone is not a moat What this means in more detail ⚙️ AI has crossed the chasm from feature to table stakes. Many companies still struggle to articulate what compounds over time. If your model does not get structurally better with scale or hold a truly differentiated position, it will get competed away. Recent healthcare moves from OpenAI and Anthropic make that explicit 📊 The winners are often boring on the surface. Less talk of disruption. More focus on value proposition, incentive alignment, clinical outcomes, and a deep understanding of how dollars actually move through the system. 🏢 Strategic buyers usually know exactly what they are missing. Many startups still have work to do in understanding why a buyer needs to own them versus simply use them. 🧾 Regulatory strategy is no longer about speed to approval. It is about designing the company so compliance, evidence generation, and reimbursement reinforce each other rather than slow everything down. The market is rewarding teams that understand healthcare as an operating system, not a pitch category. Grateful for the founders and operators who showed up early and spoke candidly. Looking forward to continuing the discussions.

We work with venture-backed companies that raised capital, pursued the high-growth playbook, but couldn't achieve breakout traction. Our approach goes beyond typical restructuring: we rebuild these businesses so they no longer look like "failed ventures" but rather like solid companies with proven PMF, clean cap tables that deliver good outcomes at reasonable valuations, and P&Ls aligned with current reality rather than aspirational projections. We initially believed restructuring alone would make these companies sellable. But the bar to transact at 3-4x revenue multiples is materially higher than it was even a few years ago. Here's the trap we see repeatedly: companies cut to breakeven, buy themselves runway, but then stall. Restructuring without follow-on growth capital creates a flatlined business that's hard to exit. What buyers want to see is a company that's been fixed and can prove it has momentum again. This matters especially when raising a "bridge to profitability" from existing investors. A bridge that only gets you to breakeven isn't enough. You need enough capital for the restructuring and some growth investment. But the sequencing is critical: cut first, get to a sustainable base, then deploy growth capital. Trying to do both simultaneously rarely works. The companies that successfully exit aren't just the ones that survived, they're the ones that restructured, then strategically invested to show they could grow profitably from a sustainable foundation.
