Started new QA contract job in June through TEKsystems. I'm enjoying it and still feel like there is so much more to learn. I bought a new notebook as I usually do. Day 1, page 1 is filled with intentions for growth, ideas to look for to sharpen my skills, and small reminders to stay mindful during the onboarding process. A few helpful scriptures to visually remind myself that I'm not working just for me or a paycheck. I'm working to help my team succeed and working to support my family. The outcome isn't about me, it's about what I'm doing for others. Like sharing my experiences in a LinkedIn post that probably won't be shared or cared by the vast majority of folks. But one person might find it insightful and be encouraged. In QA you are to question everything. Early on they don't tell you that you should include yourself on those questions. How can I improve the way I report bugs? What patterns am I missing in failures? Am I truly paying attention with care for the user experience? A new page is turned as I reflect today about where I am and where I want to go with this career. That end of contract looms over. What am I doing today to improve myself to be a better candidate for the position I am in? What am I doing to improve myself for when this contract ends and the next one is on the horizon. No matter how much experience we bring, the tech world evolves fast. This is nothing new. We must evolve with it and continue to learn. A few ideas to continue to grow in your QA role: Learn a little every week: Tools like Playwright, Postman, or JMeter offer new testing perspectives. Most of them have little training academies that are often free to participate in. I've been going through Codecademy learning more of the dev side of things. Participating in game jams to help hone my creative skills along side my tech skills. Reflect after every sprint: What went well? What could be better? Even one sentence makes a difference. How many tickets did you test? What were some new things you learned through the process? Notes like these help encourage you going forward. They are also notes you can use to sharpen your resume later. Remember they want Quantifiable Data on resumes. Give and seek feedback often: Growth doesn't happen in silence. Being mindful isn’t just for wellness apps it’s essential for quality too. Work with your other QA members to uplift and encourage. You never know when someone could use a little extra happiness. Whether it’s catching a tricky bug or holding space in a standup, your presence matters. Your skills matter. You matter. We are never done learning. I keep seeing the same thing during interviews and interview prep discussions. Freshers and SDETs usually know what a concept is, but interviews test how well you can think, explain, and apply it. That’s exactly why I wrote my eBook last year: Top 15 Real-Time Interview Q&A. I didn’t write it like a textbook.
