Michael Muchmore reposted thisMichael Muchmore reposted thisCities and towns account for only about 3% of total U.S. land area, but these landscapes play an outsized role for both people and birds. Hundreds of bird species use developed areas for part of their life cycle, especially during migration. Through the Urban Bird Treaty, communities across the country receive grants to restore habitat and improve the places people live—but not every community that’s ready gets funded. The Local Communities and Bird Habitat Stewardship Act would build on what’s already working and make it possible for this support to reach more communities. We've highlighted six places where this work is happening—and one that’s still waiting. Check them out at the link in comments.

Michael Muchmore liked thisMichael Muchmore liked thisAs someone who once worked on the Paramount lot, this is really sad. David Ellison is threatening to move Paramount out of California, which would mean off its iconic historic lot, if the WB merger doesn't go through. This would also seemingly mean the WB lot would face a shakeup too. Imagine how many families would be uprooted or ripped apart realizing that they have to up and move to another state or lose their jobs, and then see the iconic studio lots of Paramount or WB change hands after 100 years. Not everyone who works on those lots is making big bucks, and it's not easy to switch jobs in Hollywood in this contracting industry. As someone who previously worked across the industry (see me in the Paramount marketing partnerships + licensing team pic below!) and whose spouse currently works in physical production as a director of photography, let me tell you -- Hollywood has been gutted and scrapped for parts in recent years. In short, the big shift to streaming has been anything but easy. After the strikes were resolved, the suits of Hollywood largely decided that shooting in America is no longer ideal because other places can be cheaper. But the US film production industry is shrinking now as a result. Sure, New Jersey and New York are the current US hot spots due to their tax incentives, but non-American crews in places like Hungary and other parts of eastern Europe have become the new popular places to shoot because the wages are low, productions don't have to pay for healthcare, and in some cases there are no unions and that means lower wages and longer hours. Canada is a similar-but-different situation that's cheaper because of the weaker currency, has tax incentives, and socialized healthcare productions don't have to pay for. I keep seeing posts from US production workers who are scraping their savings just to get by and haven't been able to find a job in months. People often forget how little some below-the-line crew in the US are paid. Moving Paramount and WB out of California would be a devastating blow to the film industry and everyone working in it. It's hard to ignore how much decisions made at the top impact everyone all the way down. No one needed or wanted this merger, but here we are. Yes, show business is a business. But it has to keep its soul too.

Today, I hear similar concerns around AI governance. Everyone agrees organizations need it. Far fewer know where to start. So I tried something. Then I asked an AI governance practitioner to review the responses without knowing which model wrote what. An Idaho farmer uses it for precision agriculture across thousands of acres. A nonprofit shipped it via oxback and riverboat to remote Amazonian and African communities. An engineer used it on active volcanoes to stream real-time earthquake and seismic warnings. A cattle rancher uses it to track herds across 80 miles of rugged terrain. Starlink is going farther and doing more than most people realize. It's not just letting people get online when they're too far out for cable and fiber; it's empowering a whole generation of explorers and businesses in ways that would have been unthinkable just six years ago. "Let me be clear: I’m definitely not a coder - but that’s the beauty of it: the process was quick and surprisingly straightforward." A great piece on Tes magazine here from Dan Comber about how, with a little bit of patience and research, he turned static school documents into 'live' chatbots that could answer parent and pupil questions, any time of the day.
