We recently reflected on some of the most interesting data insights that we have learned over the past decade, spanning 147,000 graduates, 17 countries, and 40 professions — to date, we have 57 million data points that track our learners' progress before, during, and after the program for up to five years. These insights were hard won, shaped as much by what we did not get right as by what we did. Together, they help us to understand patterns in the breadth, depth, and durability of our impact. The World Bank's strategy is laser-focused on how jobs serve as a pathway out of poverty — something that we see firsthand every day in our work at Generation. Stable, living wage jobs set people on a trajectory to achieve financial and personal well-being. This means they can invest in housing, education, health, and other areas that benefit not only themselves, but their families and their communities as well. Mona Mourshed shared thisAs we head towards the close of 2025, I wanted to share the results of Generation's annual alumni survey. Every year, we survey thousands of alumni globally who completed our programs years earlier, seeking to understand if they are still working, how their careers have progressed, and the ways that stable employment is empowering them and their families. Entering our programs, 90% of learners are unemployed; and, three to six months after completing our program, 83% are employed. The impact we see years later is profound: two to five years later, 76% of surveyed alumni are still employed and 73% are earning a living wage. They deploy these resources to cover family expenses and to invest in housing, education, and more. We want to create change that lasts, and these measures of #Durability — the outcomes from our work that take years to manifest — tell us we are achieving that goal. Dear Colleagues, Thank you for your very kind messages following my appointment as Director of Education Cannot Wait (ECW). While I step into this role wholeheartedly, I do so with a heavy heart, mindful of the relentless impact of wars all around us. In the past month alone, war has devastated the lives of hundreds of thousands of children and youth and disrupted their access to education. As daunting a time as this is, it is precisely the reason ECW exists. When the sound of war and destruction is loud, our voices must be louder, and our resolve must be stronger. Children need education now. Their education cannot wait. When the world around them is crumbling, schools are not only essential for learning; they are life affirming. Schools, even in their simplest forms, provide a semblance of normalcy and access to essential health and nutrition. Over my first 100 days on the job, I will spend as much time as I can listening, learning and strengthening our global education in emergencies community. Together, we will deliver on our top three priorities in ECW's new Strategic Plan for 2027–2030: 1. Reaching 10 million of the most affected children and youth. 2. Localising our impact by delivering 50% of support through local partnerships. 3. Unlocking US$600 million in vital financing for education in crises. Thank you for your ongoing encouragement. When Rebecca and I first started out, the pitch was simple: millions of Americans are stuck in jobs that don't pay enough. The education system is obsessed with degrees, and few were building for the people who need it most. That was true then, and is more true now. AI is rewriting the fundamentals of how work works, and the people who most need a new path are the least likely to get one. So we train them with fast, flexible programs and real credentials. A few hours later, jobsdata.ai was born. It's now a comprehensive, free resource to explore how AI might impact jobs and the economy. I've compiled 466 research papers, journal articles, and explainers by researchers like Erik Brynjolfsson, Martha Gimbel, Daron Acemoglu, David Autor, Tyna Eloundou, Daniel Rock, Bharat Chandar, Molly Kinder, John Horton, James Bessen, Avi Goldfarb, Ajay Agrawal, Alex Imas, Jed Kolko, Soumitra Shukla, and Gad Levanon. It's spurred creative coding projects to support our grantmaking and partnerships. More importantly, it's made it clear how important it is to invest in early career experience opportunities as the first rung of the career ladder becomes less reliable (like Parker Dewey, Apprenti and others), in a functioning modern safety net (like mRelief, Upsolve, Student Basic Needs Coalition, GiveDirectly, and others), in accessible and cost-effective job training (like Per Scholas, CodePath, Pursuit and others) in a transparent non-degree credential marketplace (like The Burning Glass Institute's Credentials of Value Index) and in radically better career navigation tools (like CareerVillage.org, SkillUp Coalition and CampusEvolve). Funders also need to be learning together (Opportunity AI), speeding up their pace of grantmaking in AI, and building partnerships in new ways to support evidence building and integration across large legacy systems. As of this morning, jobsdata.ai has 17,903 views and more than 500 people have followed here on LinkedIn. Personal highlights were Erik Brynjolfsson's team at Stanford reaching out to discuss early AI signals in their new research, and this week CNBC interviewing me on how AI is impacting entrepreneurship and education pathways. Who would have thought? After weeks deep in the data, I'm more optimistic than ever. Yes, there are real risks. But we've all been handed a magic paintbrush, and I believe humans will find a way to use it (or maybe partner with it?) to make this world better. It will take all of us to make that future real.

Mona Mourshed liked thisMona Mourshed liked thisSkills-First initiative is gaining traction in Singapore. Two articles in Straits Times and in Business Times from two academia deserve our attention. Associate Professor May Sok Mui Lim from Singapore Institute of Technology took a critical review of the assessment designed within Singapore's continuing education and learning system. She posits that Singapore's CET system trains widely but assesses poorly — "pass" too often means attendance, not competence. A.P. Lim argues that adult learners deserve assessments that mirror real work, give honest feedback, and allow more than one chance to demonstrate capability. With the SkillsFuture–WSG merger underway, there is a timely opportunity to shift from certificate-counting to genuine skills verification — raising standards without raising fear, and turning assessment from a gatekeeper into a growth tool for both workers and employers. At the system level, course fee subsidy that tied to attendance and passing assessment compromised the real intent of assessment. Nanyang Technological University Singapore Emeritus Professor Meng Hwa Er argues that Singapore must stop conflating credentials, competency, and capability — three distinct things. As AI takes over routine work, what will matter most are uniquely human qualities: adaptability, curiosity, resilience, ethical judgment, and the ability to learn continuously in unfamiliar contexts. Qualifications record the past; capability determines the future. Singapore's employers, schools, and universities must therefore shift emphasis from credential accumulation toward brain-based, experiential learning that develops the whole person — because in an age of accelerating change, human capability is the only truly future-proof asset. I am heartened by the numerous leaders in various fields stepping forward to initiate change. My previous posts, I highlighted the view of Simon Lim and Andrew Buay (MSID, SID-AD). I had the great fortune of learning from Dr Olga Gavrilova from EPAM Systems about their Skills-First human capital system. We need more leaders to join the Skills-First initiative.
