Protecting Coastal Communities with Faster Climate Modeling Coastal communities in the U.S. have a 26% chance of flooding within a 30-year period. This percentage is expected to increase due to climate-change-driven sea-level rise, making these areas even more vulnerable. Michael Beck, professor and director of the UC Santa Cruz Center for Coastal Climate Resilience, focuses on modeling and mapping the benefits of coral reefs and mangroves for reducing flood risk, which helps inform adaptation and preservation efforts. Over the past week, my conversations with several professors across the University of California system have been eye-opening. From research on Geo-LLMs, to progress in quantum computing, and even a prototype processor jointly developed by UCLA + UC Riverside that can run at room temperature (without the need for cooling) — it’s clear that the boundaries of what’s possible are being pushed every day. While my recent exchanges were limited to University of California professors, I’m sure similar groundbreaking research is happening at other leading universities worldwide. And working for a major geospatial technology company like Esri, while networking with these researchers, I can confidently say: AI and deep learning are pushing geospatial far beyond traditional maps. In the coming years, we can expect: * Conversational GIS — Imagine chatting with spatial data. Ask: “Where are the fastest growing urban areas?” and get instant, map-linked answers. * Real-time change detection — From tracking city expansion to monitoring forests and coastlines, AI will spot changes as they happen. * Accessible geospatial tools — What was once limited to specialists will become available to everyone, across industries from climate and agriculture to logistics and insurance. * AI Agents for Geospatial — Intelligent agents that don’t just analyze data, but act on it: automating workflows, suggesting interventions, and supporting decision-making in domains from disaster response to smart cities. This shift isn’t just about technology. It’s about making geospatial intelligence more actionable, more inclusive, and more impactful than ever before. The Joint Video Coding Experts Team (JVET) is actively developing the successor to VVC/H.266, which was finalized in 2020. Significant progress has been achieved to date, as demonstrated by recent Calls for Evidence. It is noteworthy that this expert group previously developed the widely adopted HEVC/H.265 and AVC/H.264 codecs prior to introducing VVC. 💡 Quantum-Inspired Computing at Room Temperature For decades, researchers have been chasing the promise of quantum computing but the need for extreme cooling has kept it out of everyday reach. Now, UCLA engineers have taken a different path. They built a physics-inspired system that runs at room temperature, using oscillators instead of digital processors to solve hard optimization problems like scheduling, routing, and network planning. This approach, called an Ising machine, mimics how physical systems naturally settle into balance. The team used a quantum material (tantalum sulfide) that bridges quantum mechanics and classical physics, showing it can be done with far less power and with the potential to integrate into existing silicon technology. It is a reminder that progress often comes not just from chasing the ideal, but from rethinking the path. 👉 What do you think?
