Yesterday night we celebrated the 10th year anniversary of the Model 3 unveiling. It was an absolute joy to see so many familiar faces together in one space. The talent concentration must have been at an all-time high but more importantly the sense of belonging and being part of something truly unique and special was palpable - it really felt like a family gathering. I haven't been able to stop thinking about the conversations, anecdotes, but also what's still keeping us up at night and the new adventures we are taking on. One thing was clear to me. This group, full of scars of Production Hell is still hungry for more and is the proof that the Model 3 wasn’t the finish line, it was just the starting gun. In fact those scars have become true blueprints for how modern engineering is moving things forward, across all sorts of sectors from robotics, to new battery technologies, to grid modernization and many many more. Thank you all for keeping that fire alive, for protecting the culture we built back then and that has become the gold standard for tough tech founders, and for bringing to this world one miracle after another. Thank you to all of you for coming out and making this an unforgettable night. To the Model 3, to you, and to everyone who made it a reality - Cheers family!!

Max Brown liked thisMax Brown liked thisThe skunkworks approach isn’t new. As many of you will know, it was first made famous by Kelly Johnson at Lockheed. Back in 1907, Henry Ford was already using some of the methodology, creating a small team to innovate on a secret floor of the Piquette Avenue Plant ultimately leading to the Model T and the moving assembly line. Four years ago, we followed that same blueprint with a small but mighty team in Irvine, California with the mission of creating a universal EV platform for a family of affordable electric vehicles. Today, the mission remains the same, but the growing team has a bigger home at the Electric Vehicle Development Center (EVDC) in Long Beach, California and Greenfield Labs in Palo Alto. EVDC isn’t just a new campus —it’s about creating an environment where we can build, test, and validate our next generation of electric vehicles, so our customers don’t have to. While some in the industry are pulling back on electric vehicles, we are building a family of affordable, high-tech vehicles starting with a mid-size electric pickup next year. Our commitment to an electric future is unwavering, and the EVDC is a physical manifestation of that. The real breakthrough here is a fundamental shift in how we work. We’ve broken down traditional silos: we have designers, engineers, supply chain experts, and manufacturing team members sitting side-by-side. It’s the agility of a startup paired with Ford’s massive industrial might. I am incredibly proud of how this team is taking the UEV platform from concept to scale. We aren’t just developing new vehicles; we are redefining how Ford will compete and will give customers more affordable electric vehicles to get really excited about. # Tesla Plans to Expand Robotaxi Service to San Francisco Bay Area in 1-2 Months Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced plans to expand the robotaxi service to the San Francisco Bay Area within the next 1-2 months. The timeline is contingent on obtaining necessary regulatory approvals. 1. Pilot Program in Austin, Texas - Tesla initiated a **limited test run** of its robotaxi program in **Austin** last month. - The program: - Involves **approximately a dozen vehicles**. - Includes a **human safety monitor** positioned in the front passenger seat of each robotaxi. - Is restricted to **selected passengers** via **invitation-only access**. - Musk confirmed an **expansion of the test zone in Austin** is planned for **this upcoming weekend**. 2. Regulatory Challenges in California - Tesla’s move into the Bay Area hinges on approvals from the following agencies: - **California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)** - **California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC)** - While the **CPUC granted initial approval** in March: - Additional permits are **still required** before Tesla can begin **paid, fully driverless robotaxi operations**. 3. Strategic Importance for Tesla - The robotaxi initiative is central to Tesla’s future, as traditional EV sales face headwinds: - **Aging vehicle lineup**. - **Intensified competition** from emerging and established EV brands. - **Negative consumer sentiment** toward Musk’s political positions. - Tesla is increasingly **banking on AI-driven technologies**, including robotaxis and humanoid robots, to drive future growth. 4. Autonomous Ride-Hailing: Industry Challenges - Full-scale deployment of robotaxis faces persistent obstacles: - **High R&D and development costs**. - **Strict regulatory environments**. - **Technical hurdles in autonomous driving**. - **Public safety concerns**. - Industry comparisons: - **GM’s Cruise** shut down its robotaxi operations due to safety issues. - **Waymo (Alphabet-owned)** operates robotaxis commercially in several cities and maintains a **fleet of around 1,500 vehicles** through a **cautious and phased rollout strategy**. 5. California’s Stringent Regulatory Landscape - In contrast to Texas’ light oversight, California imposes **multi-tiered regulations**: - Mandatory **submission of detailed testing data** to the DMV. - Requirements for **multiple permits** from both DMV and CPUC for: - **Fully autonomous operations** - **Paid passenger services** 6. Initial Setbacks in Austin Trial - Early user videos from Austin revealed concerning issues such as: - **Traffic violations**. - **Awkward or incorrect maneuvers**. - These findings raise questions about the **readiness and reliability** of Tesla’s robotaxi technology.

Redwood Materials, the battery recycling and energy storage company founded by former Tesla CTO JB Straubel has announced on 28/1/26 that it has expanded its Series E funding round to a total of $425 million including Google as a strategic investor, They join NVIDIA (via its NVentures arm) which participated when the round was initially announced at $350 million in October 2025. The new investment values Redwood Materials at approximately $6 billion. Key Drivers for the Investment: AI Power Demands: The primary driver for Google and other tech giants is the skyrocketing electricity requirement of AI data centers. The Redwood Energy division focuses on grid-scale energy storage using repurposed second-life electric vehicle (EV) batteries, which provides a faster and more sustainable way to power AI infrastructure. Essential Infrastructure: Redwood has positioned energy storage as "essential infrastructure" rather than an optional component of the grid. Their systems are designed to bridge the gap between renewable energy generation and the constant, high-power needs of AI factories. Vertical Integration: Redwood is currently the only vertically integrated, closed-loop battery platform in the U.S., handling everything from recycling end-of-life batteries to manufacturing critical cathode and anode materials and deploying finished storage systems. This move is part of a broader trend of Big Tech investing directly in energy solutions to secure their AI roadmaps. In December 2025, Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc., agreed to acquire clean energy developer Intersect Power for $4.75 billion, further signaling its intent to control its own power supply chain as it competes in the AI race. #CleanTech #Sustainability #RedwoodMaterials #Google #DataCenter #CircularEconomy

My View of Hyundai’s 2026 Leadership Changes - a clear signal to top talent. At CES 2026 in Las Vegas this week, Hyundai's Chang Jae-hoon told the press, "It is never too late" regarding the group's gap in autonomous driving. While the headline was optimistic, the personnel moves behind the scenes tell a story of urgent, ruthless pragmatism. As an #ExecutiveSearch consultant who has partnered with HMG on global mandates, I read the December 2025 and January 2026 reshuffles not just as promotions, but as a critical adjustment of their organizational design. Here are the four deeper industry shifts I see driving these changes: 1. The Failure of the "Two-Track" R&D Model For years, HMG tried to incubate a "startup within a giant." They had Chang-hyun Song (ex-Apple/Naver) running the AVP (Advanced Vehicle Platform) division largely separate from the traditional R&D center. The Reality Check: Song’s resignation on Dec. 4 and his internal memo about hitting "invisible walls" revealed a hard truth: You cannot silo software transformation. The Fix: By retiring hardware veteran Hee-won Yang and placing Manfred Harrer (ex-Porsche/Apple) in charge of a unified R&D, HMG is admitting that software and hardware must be developed under one roof, by one commander. The era of the "independent internal startup" is dead; the era of "integrated industrialization" has begun. 2. The Death of the "Generalist" CEO in Tech Affiliates The replacement of the Yun-goo Kim from Hyundai AutoEver with Seokmoon Ryoo, a pure technologist from Riot Games and SOCAR is a strongest signal the SDV (Software-Defined Vehicle) era requires domain expertise in the C-Suite. You cannot manage developers if you cannot speak their language. The promotion of Eunsook Jin (ex-NHN CTO) to President of ICT further cements this: HMG is done with administrators running tech divisions. 3. "Physical AI" and the Manufacturing Hedge. While the industry obsesses over robotaxis, HMG is making a massive bet on the factory. The promotion of Jun-cheol Jung to President of Manufacturing is linked to the group's new focus on "Physical AI"—using robotics to make production flexible enough to handle the volatile shifts between EV, Hybrid, and ICE demand. So? If you cannot beat Tesla on FSD software immediately, you must beat them on manufacturing flexibility and cost. This is HMG’s hedge against EV market stagnation. 4. The Geopolitical Center of Gravity. The promotion of Seung-gyu Yoon to President of Kia is a direct result of the record profits generated in North America. With trade barriers rising globally, the executives who can navigate the U.S. regulatory landscape (IRA) are gaining influence over product planning in Seoul. The Bottom Line for Leaders: The tolerance for "incubation" and "vision" without immediate execution is gone. The new leaders must merge Silicon Valley speed with Chaebol scale. #ExecutiveSearch #Leadership #AugustLeadership #LukasBeech Image: hyundaimotorgroup.com

The lidar vs camera debate may be entering a new phase. Ouster’s new Rev8 lineup with native color lidar is interesting because it points to something bigger than a new sensor release. It points to a shift in how robotics and autonomy teams may think about perception stacks. For years, companies have been buying cameras, buying lidar, then spending huge amounts of engineering time trying to calibrate, fuse, and reason across separate data streams. That creates a real hiring problem. You do not just need perception engineers. You need people who understand: • sensors • calibration • 3D point clouds • camera systems • embedded constraints • robotics deployment • real-world edge cases • perception architecture • data fusion If native color lidar reduces some of the fusion burden, the talent profile may change too. The best teams will still need strong perception engineers, but the value may shift toward people who can understand the whole system: sensor physics, hardware constraints, software architecture, and deployment in real environments. That is what makes this market so interesting. Every sensor breakthrough creates a hiring ripple. New hardware changes the stack. The stack changes the skills. The skills change where the best talent comes from. In autonomy and robotics, hiring is never just about matching keywords. It is about understanding which technical problems are actually changing.

CNBC Went To Austin For Tesla's Robotaxi Launch. Here's What Happened CNBC traveled to Austin, Texas, and drove around in a Tesla Model 3 to witness the supervised, invite-only launch of not more than 20 of Tesla‘s long-awaited robotaxis. Nearly a decade ago, CEO Elon Musk promised Tesla would be able to drive itself and owners would be able to rent out their vehicles for ridesharing, even while they slept. Tesla's very limited launch starting June 22 was not without incident, and Teslas plan still has lots of skeptics and critics. But some truly believe in the company and in Musk.
