Some of you may remember a vigorous (and at times heated) debate about the merit of tariffs that I had with various folks FreightWaves back in December and January about the outcomes from tariffs. Those of you who read my content know I'm highly skeptical President Trump's tariff policies will benefit the transportation sector, especially the domestic trucking industry. The primary counterargument was that tariffs will result in massive reshoring of manufacturing, which will more than compensate for lost volumes from trade. I make note of this because it appears that FreightWaves has increasingly come around to my view, which can be seen articles like this one (https://lnkd.in/gRcXWBBJ), where the subhead is " How much economic pain will the Trump administration tolerate?" What lessons can we learn? •There is certainly no evidence of manufacturing jobs increasing yet due to these tariffs (https://lnkd.in/gAVkMT4Q), as manufacturing payrolls are flat since October. •Tariffs destroy demand; we are expecting sharp reductions in containerized imports from China to materialize over the next few weeks. •Across the board tariffs that hit things like machinery that we need to set up factories is nonsensical from a policy standpoint. Implication: I'm glad to see FreightWaves has come to their current position off of a data-driven approach (it's easy to find data showing the negative effects of these tariffs but very difficult to find data suggesting they are achieving their stated goals). This episode demonstrates that economic theory can indeed be quite predictive. #economics #freight #trucking #shipsandshipping #supplychain
