One of the greatest joys as a parent is watching your child discover what she lovesand then watching her learn that dreams still require work. Recently, Sakai had an incredible opportunity to work on a Wawa commercial alongside Saquon Barkley. 🏈🎥 Of course, I’m proud of the opportunity. But I’m even more proud of everything that came before it. The auditions. The coaching. The self-tapes. The callbacks that don’t always turn into bookings. The long days on set. Learning lines. Taking direction. Staying patient. And then being ready when her moment comes. At 10 years old, Sakai is learning something that took many of us much longer to understand: You don’t control when the opportunity comes. You control how prepared you are when it does. Watching her continue to grow as an actor has been an amazing journey. Every experience is building something —confidence, discipline, resilience, professionalism and a belief that she belongs in the room. And this one was pretty special. Getting to share the set with someone like Saquon Barkley, an athlete whose own journey represents hard work, perseverance and excellence, made the experience that much more meaningful. But my favorite part? Seeing that smile between takes and remembering that through all the auditions, expectations and hard work… she’s still a kid having the time of her life. ❤️ Valuable lessons for all of us. A few years ago, I had the privilege of coaching a fantastic young man, Matt Rogers, during his 15 - 17U AAU years with our Mid Atlantic Select organization. Along with an amazing core of coaches and mentors, I have been fortunate to coach some really talented young men who have reached the highest levels on and off the court. Matt always stood out because he worked extremely hard, allowed us to push him, and was genuinely a great young man who was fun to be around. After high school, Matt went on to American University, where he had tremendous success, including earning the Patriot League Player of the Year award and leading his team to the NCAA Tournament. Then everything changed in one moment during the NCAA tournament game: an ACL injury. Season over. Dream of making the NBA suspended. Most stories end there. Matt's just added another chapter to what is shaping up to be a tremendous book. For the past year, he chose the path nobody celebrates: early mornings, brutal rehab sessions, setbacks that questioned everything, and the grinding commitment to come back better. No shortcuts. No self-pity. Just relentless discipline. All that resilience has turned into the opportunity for him to compete for a spot on an NBA roster with the Philadelphia 76ers Summer League team. But here's what actually matters: whether he makes an NBA roster or not, he's already proved something far more valuable: that your character isn't determined by what happens to you; it's determined by what you do next. This is a sports story, but it's also the only story that matters in business and every other industry. We all face adversity. A deal falls through. A promotion doesn't come. A market shifts. A company reorganizes, and suddenly, the narrative you told yourself about your career doesn't match reality. The setback really isn't the issue. Our response is. Great leaders and organizations aren't built by avoiding failure. They're built by people who get knocked down, learn something, and keep moving when the outcome is uncertain. That's the entire difference. That is what often separates the good from the great! Matt's journey reminds us that if you're dealing with something that didn't go as planned, don't let it become your identity. Let it become your foundation and springboard to something even greater! The people who win aren't the ones who never fall; they're the ones who refuse to stay down! The best is yet to come for you, similar to Matt, it's one day, one rep, and one drop of sweat at a time!

This isn't just a basketball book; it's a masterclass in leading with conviction when the system wasn't designed with you in mind. What resonated with me is that Dawn didn't wait for permission. From the courts of North Philadelphia to three national championships at South Carolina, she built something undeniable, not by adhering to someone else's rules, but by being relentlessly and unapologetically herself. Here are three key takeaways that apply far beyond the court: 1. Environment shapes you, but it doesn't define you. She had every reason to let her background limit her potential. Instead, it became her fuel. 2. Favor isn't luck. It's what happens when preparation, character, and purpose collide repeatedly over the years, often quietly. 3. The best leaders make others better. Her coaching career isn't merely an extension of her playing career; it's a whole second act of excellence, focused on investing in those who come after her. As a youth basketball coach with Mid Atlantic Select AAU and an assistant at the college level, books like this remind me that investing in young players goes far beyond just Xs and Os. For anyone in a leadership role in sports, business, or life, this book is worth your time.

Mario Scott, MBA shared thisOne of the most meaningful conversations I had recently was with one of my former basketball players about the idea of giving yourself permission to be great. He recently made the tough decision to transfer for an incredible opportunity. As we talked about the exciting future ahead of him, both on and off the court, we also spent time reflecting on some of the lessons he’ll carry with him into this next chapter. One insight kept rising to the surface: the importance of giving yourself permission to truly step into your greatness. It was eye-opening to think about. Here’s this 6’5”, 45+ inch vertical, incredibly talented young man with a bright future ahead of him… and yet, like so many of us, he didn’t just need external validation. More importantly, he needed to intrinsically validate himself. Honestly, it made me reflect on my own journey as well and how easy it is for all of us to fall into the trap of allowing others to define our worth, our value, or our potential. As coaches, mentors, leaders, parents, and teammates, we all play a role in helping people see what’s possible in themselves. A supportive circle matters. Encouragement matters. Validation matters. But at some point, you also have to validate yourself. You have to stop waiting for everyone else to confirm your worth before you move with confidence. You have to believe you belong in the room, on the court, at the table, or in the conversation before the applause comes. Too many talented people minimize themselves while waiting for external permission to fully step into who they already are. Confidence isn’t arrogance. It’s alignment. It’s understanding that your gifts, your preparation, your work ethic, and your experiences were given to you for a reason. Today... Give yourself permission to lead. Give yourself permission to grow. Give yourself permission to win. And most importantly… give yourself permission to be great. Sometimes the breakthrough starts the moment you stop asking whether you’re enough and start walking like you already know.

Mario Scott, MBA shared thisAlthough my Pfizer Global Health Fellow experience with North Star Alliance in Nairobi took place at the end of 2025, the impact of that time continues to resonate deeply with me. As I reflect, I’m still inspired by the people, tge culture, and the powerful work being done to expand access to care and to protect the most vulnerable communities. Im humbled to have had tge opportunity to work alongside partners committed to expanding access to care for mobile and vulnerable populations. The experience opened my eyes to how bold solutions can translate into measurable impact. Through their network of “Blue Box” Roadside Wellness Clinics, North Star has helped ensure essential health services reach communities often left behind with more than 2.1 million clients reached since 2006 and dozens of clinics operating across multiple countries along key transit corridors. I’m incredibly thankful to Pfizer for the Global Health Fellows program; a program that truly lives the Pfizer mission of Breakthroughs that change patients’ lives. It’s a powerful reminder of what’s possible when organizations invest in purpose, empower their people, and commit to making a difference beyond their walls. Even now, a few months later, I find myself energized and eager to identify new opportunities, big and small, to continue advancing health equity. This experience didn’t mark an ending; it sparked a deeper commitment to keep learning, partnering, and contributing wherever impact is needed most. Many of you have followed her journey through my posts and the lessons she’s already begun to learn along the way. To celebrate her television debut on the FOX show Best Medicine (Tuesday nights at 8pm — shameless plug 😊), we hosted a watch party, both in our home, and virtually. What started as a celebration quickly became something more meaningful: a milestone, a moment of reflection, and a reminder of two powerful lessons. First: the importance of a strong and supportive village. Seeing family, friends, teammates, and mentors show up to celebrate her was both humbling and incredibly special. It felt like a capstone to this early chapter of her journey, not simply because she appeared on screen, but because of everything it represented behind the scenes. The early mornings. The long days on set. The discipline, patience, and quiet perseverance required when no one is watching. That lesson translates directly into the corporate space. None of us grow, lead, or succeed alone. Behind every milestone is a network of people who believe in us, challenge us, and create the conditions for us to thrive. Whether in entertainment, healthcare, sales, or leadership — a strong, supportive village matters. The second lesson was just as important: Pause and celebrate the wins. In fast-paced environments, we often move from one goal to the next without acknowledging progress. This moment was a reminder that taking time to celebrate builds confidence, resilience, momentum, and reignites a belief in whats possible! Im incredibly proud of my "Snowflake"! Mario Scott, MBA shared thisProud Dad Moment + A Leadership Lesson in Teamwork If you’ve been following along with me here on LinkedIn, you’ve seen me share pieces of my daughter’s journey as she prepares for her television debut on Fox’s new series Best Medicine launching January 6th. Somebody joked the other day that I was promoting the show like Sakai was the star of it. After some brief reflection, I realized that I am and im doing it for two incredibly important reasons. First and foremost, im super proud of her hardwork and dedication. This role came with: ⏰ 6:00 AM call times 🎥 Long days on set 📚 Preparation, patience, and focus 💪 Showing up consistently to make a meaningful contribution She embraced every early morning, every hour of filming, and every moment of learning; not for attention, but to do her part and to play her role extraordinarily well. Greatness demands those habits. That level of dedication matters, especially when its not your turn to be the "star" of the show. Secondly, i want to teach her what being a great teammate is all about!!! 🌟 Being a great teammate isn’t just about maximum effort when you’re the headliner or the leader. It’s about showing up fully even when your role is a complimentary one to ensure the success of the team. It’s about understanding that excellence is built in the quiet, unseen moments and its that excellence that is preparing you for your time to lead! I’m proud of her, not just because she’s on TV, that can surely come and go, but because these disciplines and the choices she is making are shaping her into a young leader and an amazing teammate. Mario Scott, MBA shared this🌍 Honored to Serve as a Pfizer Global Health Fellow in Nairobi, Kenya This week I had the privilege of supporting the North Star Alliance in Nairobi through the Pfizer Global Health Fellows Program, and this experience has been one of the most meaningful chapters of my professional journey. While attending the Regional Conference on Transport Corridors and Health (RCTCH 2025), I saw firsthand the challenges and opportunities that shape health access for mobile populations across East Africa. The presentations highlighted barriers such as infrastructure gaps, stigma, mobility challenges, and funding shortfalls — but they also showcased powerful success stories driven by partnership and innovation. One example that stayed with me: North Star Alliance’s Roadside Wellness Centres (“Blue Clinics”), which transform shipping containers into fully functional clinics placed along major transport corridors. These clinics deliver 50,000+ consultations a year, link 85% of HIV tests to care, and bridge critical gaps for long-distance drivers, sex workers, and surrounding communities. The data presented at the conference underscored the urgency of this work: Truck drivers face 5–26% HIV prevalence, significantly higher than national averages. Strategic border health posts screen 2M+ travelers annually. Integrated HIV/STI and mpox surveillance is improving detection times and cutting transmission risks. A new 2025–2030 framework calls for AI-enabled early warning systems, 1,000+ workers trained, and sustained investment to scale access across corridors. Standing beside the North Star Alliance team in the photo above, I felt the alignment with Pfizer’s mission: to deliver breakthroughs that change patients’ lives. Breakthroughs aren’t only scientific — they also come through: 👉 Access models that meet people where they are 👉 Partnerships that strengthen local health systems 👉 Digital innovation that accelerates early detection 👉 Capacity building that empowers frontline workers My fellowship allowed me to contribute to this broader mission — not from a distance, but in community, listening, learning, and supporting those who are driving impact every day. I am incredibly grateful to the North Star Alliance team for welcoming me into this important work, and to Pfizer for investing in global health partnerships that extend our mission into real-world solutions. I’ve been a recruiter for 20 years and over those 20 years the longest I’ve ever been unemployed was 3 months. I would apply to jobs and get responses. I would reach out to colleagues and they would be able to refer me to opportunities and interviews. However, this time I’ve been unemployed (besides two short term contracts) for almost 2 years. I apply vigorously every day, I tailor my resume and cover letter (with the help and guidance from AI), I reach out to my vast network but this time I’m getting nowhere. And those same colleagues that would refer me in the past, a vast majority of them are in the same boat I am. Is it just in recruiting due to AI? Or is everyone experiencing this and what do you think is the cause? More importantly, how do we fix it???

My journey in Community Violence Intervention (CVI) as the Ceasefire Coordinator for the Columbia Police Department has taught me that safer communities are built through relationships, trust, collaboration, and intentional engagement. I’m incredibly grateful for the knowledge I’ve gained and the connections I’ve made near and far, each has helped prepare me for this next chapter. Mario Scott, MBA liked thisTuesday Motivation: How good is your list? Have you had days when you’ve felt exhausted, but wondered what you actually accomplished? I’ve encouraged my teams to keep a running list of their accomplishments. If you navigated a difficult conversation, write down what happened. If you delivered a great project, capture what you did, who you worked with, and how you made it happen. Six months or five years can pass with a lot of movement and no pause to recognize whether we’re actually making progress. You can curl a ten-pound weight 30 times every day and break a sweat, but if your goal is to build strength, you need to increase the resistance. All that movement won’t get you where you want to go. Checking everything off your list doesn’t necessarily mean you had a productive day. The question is: How good is your list? One month from now, I’ll head to Nepal with the 2026 Summits for Sickle Cell team, trekking to Everest Base Camp in support of Sickle Forward. Last year, our summit was Mt. Elbert at 14,440 feet. This year, we’re going higher. But the mountain isn’t really the point. The mission is. Thousands of miles away, a child born with sickle cell disease may not have access to something as simple as newborn screening and early diagnosis. $1 screens a child. That early diagnosis can connect a child to treatment and potentially life-saving care. So while Everest Base Camp sits at 17,598 feet, the number I’m focused on is $25,000. That’s my personal fundraising goal. I’m calling it Summit 25. What makes this effort particularly powerful is its reach. Our fundraising supports Sickle Forward’s work expanding newborn screening, rapid diagnostics, treatment and local healthcare capacity across communities in 8 countries in Africa. And the impact doesn’t stop there. Funds raised this year are being matched dollar-for-dollar to provide support and education for those affected by Sickle Cell Trait and Sickle Cell Disease here in the United States.
