A new voice for news consumers is coming to Indianapolis. Poynter's Kelly McBride is leading a project that will create a public editor -- what some people know as an ombudsman -- for news coverage in the Indianapolis market. The editor will review news coverage and answer audience questions across all media in the area. Kelly knows this work well, since she has been NPR's public editor for years. A public editor can help demystify the work of journalists, hold news organizations accountable and build audience trust. Don't be obsessed with your fundraising ROI. If you are only focused on your ROI, you may make critical mistakes: - You fail to invest in new donor acquisition. - You cut back on major donor and planned giving areas. - You get scared of risk and only invest in "safe" fundraising. I can improve our organization's fundraising ROI quickly: cut back on new donor acquisition. But I'd also be setting us up for long-term failure. Should you measure your ROI and improve it? Absolutely. But it isn't the only metric that matters. We have a goal to reach for ROI. But we also have new donors, monthly donors, net revenue, attrition rate, and several other fundraising metrics to achieve. Some of those are going to collide with one another, but a healthy balance keeps the organization growing so we can serve as many people as possible. #fundraising #roi #nonprofit

What moves a donor to say yes? It’s rarely just the facts. It’s a sense of connection, legacy, and urgency. That’s the lens we brought to our latest project: a case for support brochure for the Yeshivah of Flatbush Hollou Elementary School capital campaign. Ten years ago, we helped launch the capital campaign for the school’s High School. When it came time to expand the Elementary School, they came back to Red Rooster Group. Not just for beautiful materials — but for strategy rooted in donor psychology. We worked with their team to understand what would resonate with their donor base: their emotional connection to their community, their pride in building something lasting, and the opportunity to give children the space they deserve to learn and thrive. From message framing to visual identity to talking points, everything was designed to tap into what motivates major donors: significance, trust, and belief in the institution’s future. The brochure itself? A tactile experience — with gold and clear foil, vellum pages, and a heavy cover that feels more like a book than a brochure. Because we know presentation matters. Before helping any client with PR and communications, we start by creating a plan of action. It's like our programming phase. Why do we do it? Just as you can't build a new building without knowing the size, function, and cost of a project, you can't do PR until you define it. Although the tools are the same, we have found that PR and communications programs are as individual as each of our clients. To do communications effectively, you need a broad strategy that encompasses press, digital media, social media, speaking engagements and industry involvement. In addition to promoting your projects, you want to promote your people and--above all--your ideas. In my latest Dr. in the Haus column, I urge you to have a clear strategy. Getting coverage is about more than pretty pictures and press releases; it’s about defining your firm’s unique voice, aligning outreach with business goals, and building thought leadership that editors, clients, and peers can’t ignore. "As a DMO, you act as not only a resource, but a [connection] between other community partners." In my recent conversation with Catherine Jenkins from Kent County Tourism Corp, she pointed out the importance of DMO leaders fostering relationships with people beyond those directly involved in tourism. I believe Catherine highlights a super important but often neglected aspect of accomplishing what DMOs were created to accomplish.
