John Brown, AIA, CSI, NCARB shared thisLet us know what you think about a project for a new outdoor Pavilion and pool design. The existing home is set on a 40 acre site that has a beautiful pond, barn for the families horses and they are looking to add a new space where they can have larger gatherings, cook outdoors and enjoy time with friends and family.

John Brown, AIA, CSI, NCARB shared thisGood topic of discussion. How many of you changed employers in the past two years to level up?John Brown, AIA, CSI, NCARB shared thisLast summer, I wrote about the huge salary bumps employers were offering to new talent. I interviewed one employee who got a 30% increase after he made the move to a new company. The data tells the story: a typical job switcher earned an 8.4% raise in August 2022, compared with a 5.6% increase for remaining on the job, according to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. But in recent months, job seekers aren't seeing those same premiums. In March 2023, job switchers’ wage growth fell to 7.3%, while those who stayed with employers received a 5.9% increase. Now, some employees say they regret not making a career move sooner when they could have taken advantage of those enormous increases in pay. https://lnkd.in/di8pq-rZLanding a New Job Doesn’t Come With the Pay Raise It Used toLanding a New Job Doesn’t Come With the Pay Raise It Used to

John Brown, AIA, CSI, NCARB shared thisI get asked this question all the time. I feel that there are a lot of people that really would like to start their own architecture business but have so many questions or just not sure where to start. It's definitely a lot to think about. How many of you have considered going on your own? Feel free to reach out with questions about the process or what things you think may be holding you back from starting your own firm. #architecture #business #howtoarchitectJohn Brown, AIA, CSI, NCARB shared thisIt’s #smallbusinessappreciation week! I’ve been asked by other engineers in various stages of their careers “how do you start an engineering firm?” I’m not certain I’m fully qualified to give the answer, but here’s some things that have helped me in various stages: • Early or later in your career: ✨You’re always building your network, whether you’re having lunch, at a farmers market, at a golf outing, wherever you are - learn to talk to people and be engaging ✨Never stop learning - job sites are my favorite place to learn because everything is exposed and it all comes down to brass tax when the pieces have to fit together • Early in your career: ✨Do everything - ask to go with the inspectors for a day, learn all you can about proposal writing, work on all parts of a project that you can even if it’s spread across different projects, sit in client meetings - especially the bad ones - talk to your draftsmen if you don’t do your own drafting, go to every software training available that supports your work. Get exposed to as much as possible because you need to know as much as possible if you’re going to go out on your own one day. ✨Don’t be in a hurry to get out on your own. Focus on developing your skills and your craft. The timing will come when, and if, it’s supposed to and for some of my colleagues it wasn’t until they were in their 50s or 60s. You may not be meant to own a business and that’s 100% ok. Don’t force it and don’t rush it. ✨Find a mentor - preferably more than one, both within and outside of your current organization. You do not know everything. And you will never know everything. The sooner you learn that and begin accommodating for that limitation, the better you will be in every facet of your life. • Later in your career: ✨Decide what type of firm you want to build - is it going to be as big as possible? Or, are you looking to have a small firm that allows you to have a good work-life balance? That answer will determine a lot of your path forward. My answer in my late 20s would have been very different than my answer is now in my mid-30s. • #tnsdesignandconsulting #womenentrepreneurs #civilengineering #outdoordesign #construction #engineering #design #interiordesign #sarasota #sarasotaflorida #bradenton #annamariaisland #siestakey #projectmanagement #residential #commercial #smallbusiness #localbusiness #womenengineers #wealthmindset #businessmindset #architecturalengineering #neverquit #havefaith #takerisks #businesstips #career • Photography by @bridgetlopezportraiture Logo branding by @graphicsbyjason

Working with CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc. & Alison Hussey & her dedicated team has been an adventure. Who ever thought an architect could design a fabulous Turtle Rehab Center?!? 🐢 Environmental Reporter Bridget Bruchalski at WINK News spoke with Rory from our Fort Myers office about how we approached this unusual project. The result is a strong, resilient facility for the turtles, one that is both highly complex and architecturally striking! Couldn't be prouder of Rory for his enthusiasm and ability to connect all the dots! #Sanibel Island - A sanctuary island, maintaining Florida's fragile eco-system one step at a time! #Buildingback #SmarterStrongerResilient

That’s how Jeff Bezos approaches his mornings, setting the tone for his legendary leadership style. Rather than diving straight into work, Bezos spends his early hours pottering around, sipping coffee, or simply enjoying a quiet morning. His first high-stakes meeting, where the real magic happens, kicks off at 10 a.m. Why? Because he knows that being fresh and focused is crucial for solving the toughest problems. Bezos has a golden rule: It’s not about how many decisions you make but how impactful they are. He believes making just three high-quality decisions a day can be transformative. His advice for leaders? Don't drown in busywork. Prioritize a few game-changing choices over endless minor tasks. That’s how you steer a ship, whether it’s Amazon or your own goals. What’s your take? Do you think fewer, smarter decisions could elevate your day?

Utilizing a #TEAM delivery methodology for development of a new and/or renovation project will provide the highest opportunity for #success. The options include methodologies such as #design-build, #CMatRisk, and #Bridging. Of course, success is also tied to the experience, knowledge, and capabilities of the entire project team along with the use of an Integrated Design Process as part of a holistic Integrated Project Delivery. #cannabisdesignandconstruction #cannabisfacilitydesign #cannabisconstruction #cannabisnews #cannabiscommunity #designbuild #CMaR #CMatRisk #Bridging #teamdelivery #IntegratedDesign #IntegratedProjectDelivery #Architecture #Collaboration #Success

Designing for healthcare means designing with intention. As DLR Group’s Healthcare Project Manager Sara Cheikelard, ACHA, EDAC, AIA, NCARB, shares, the new 220,000-SF pavilion at UNC Health Blue Ridge is shaped by more than plans and specs – it was shaped by people. Staff input helped guide everything from ICU room layout to the feel of waiting areas. The result? A space that reflects local needs and strengthens the bond between care and community. South Florida developers, A few years ago, on a 300,000+ SF project I watched a great developer lose hundreds of thousands because of their architect: ➖ outsourced all engineering (zero real-time coordination) ➖ had no dedicated senior QA/QC layer (“Revit will catch it”) ➖ was NOT chosen for the lowest fee, but the drawings acted like it. I personally ran an 11th-hour red-line session and saved them $ millions of dollars construction fees and in potential delays. It still wasn’t enough to offset the weak base drawings. But it proved what’s possible when someone actually forces real coordination and QA/QC. That’s why every project my team does now has in-house MEP & Structural + an extra senior QA/QC pass built in from day one. Swipe the carousel → Which of these 3 mistakes have you lived through? 1️⃣ Siloed engineering 2️⃣ No real QA/QC 3️⃣ Chased the cheapest fee

In the heart of Miami's Design District is a two-story retail structure with strong geometric angles. Since each storefront is unique, we've scanned it multiple times for multiple tenants over the past few years. This was our first scan of the building, producing an as-built 3D Revit file referencing existing survey control points in various locations around the four corners of the intersection. The data enabled tenants, architects, designers, subcontractors and suppliers worldwide to collaborate, modify the surfaces, prefabricate exterior cladding and install without surprises. #retaildesign #retailarchitecture #storedesign #architecture #interiordesign #commercialdesign #retailinteriors #architecturelovers #architecturaldesign #commercialarchitecture #brandedspaces #retailspace #architecturedetails #designbuild #shoppingexperience #commercialinteriors #architecturalservices #designprocess #miamidesign #miamiarchitecture #miamidesigndistrict #designdistrict #miamiinteriors #southfloridadesign #luxuryretail #retailrenovation #experientialretail #builtenvironment

At Georgia Tech MS in Urban Design with Sakshi N. Devaki Kesh, LEED AP ND and Ashlyn, we had this idea, what if we opened up the culverts that run under freeways and used them as walkways for people? Usually, we would avoid sending people below ground, but this could actually help connect neighborhoods that are split by big roads. We sketched out how these spaces could become safe, useful paths almost like hidden doors that open up new ways to move through the city. It ended up being one of the key concepts in our master's project. Instead of just thinking of culverts as drainage, we saw them as a chance to build something better for everyone.

Ever get that sagging feeling when surprised by the flu bug. Similarly, buildings can exhibit comparable symptoms during construction when hit by unanticipated structural deflection. For this reason, architects need to take preemptive actions during design because unanticipated deflection during construction can lead to scheduling delays, change orders, or more serious complications. As part of my FXCollaborative "Note to Self" blog series, I revisit my June 2014 post titled "A Time for Deflection", which addresses the issue of unanticipated deflection and what to do about. Check it out and let me know your thoughts. https://lnkd.in/ePmsC6qp #buildingdesign #architecture #Construction #Building #ConstructionIndustry #ArchitectureCommunity #ConstructionManagement #ConstructionAdministration #ContractAdministration #ConstructionProjectManagement #Constructionsite #ConstructionTeam #fxcollaborative #StructuralEngineering #StructuralDesign #BuildingStructures
