Most sales training talks about the “big objections”: Price Timing Authority Competitors Skepticism “Send me info” But the biggest deal-killer rarely gets spoken out loud. Ego. More specifically The gap between the customer's ego… and your ability to protect it while still moving the deal forward. Because here’s what I learned pitching CEOs, Directors, agents, you name it: They’ll hire you to solve a problem… …but under no circumstances do they want to feel like you’re educating them. Even when it’s obvious they didn’t know. (If they knew, I wouldn’t be in the room.) So I started adding 4 words before I shared anything new: “AS YOU KNOW YOURSELF…” And it changed everything. Same idea. Same insight. Same recommendation. But now it lands. Because it lets them stay in the role they need to be in: ✅ competent ✅ in control ✅ respected ✅ the decision-maker Years ago I was brought in to work with the team of a five-star hotel. The manager briefed me beforehand: “They’ll be tough. There are issues. Expect resistance.” Reality? The team were brilliant. High standards. Open to learning. Great energy. Willing to be challenged. But all day, out of the corner of my eye, I watched the manager… His face got redder and redder. Not because it was going badly. Because it was going well. And after the session, one by one, his five-star team thanked me for the contribution. The manager gave me… a very underwhelming response. Why? Because my work didn’t just help the team. It exposed something he didn’t want exposed: That the “problem” wasn’t them. It was his leadership story about them. That’s ego. So if you want to seal more deals, stop treating objections like logic problems. Start treating them like identity problems. People don’t reject your solution because it’s wrong. They reject it because it threatens how they see themselves. As you know yourself… The best closers don’t win arguments. They protect dignity and guide decisions. Most buyers stay silent when sellers insist on secrecy. They shouldn’t.   It’s common for SMB owners to hide a potential sale from employees and customers. Their fear makes sense: “What if people find out, panic, and leave before the deal closes?”   But here’s the irony: buyers share the same fear. “What if I buy this business and key people or customers leave after closing?”   Both fears are valid. And yet, most buyers cave. They move forward without meeting a single employee or customer. That’s not respect. That’s risk.   Because while sellers try to keep things quiet, employees almost always know when something’s up. They notice new meetings. They see requests for reports that never mattered before. They connect the dots long before anyone says the words “𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘦.” So when the “surprise” announcement finally comes, it’s not really a surprise.   Just because we know this, doesn’t mean we don’t respect the seller’s desire. We don’t need to bulldoze confidentiality to protect our interests. We just need balance.   Meet key employees and customers 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘳 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵. It lets the seller control the narrative while giving you real visibility. Or we time those conversations near closing when confidence is highest. Sometimes we use surveys or frame it as consultant interviews.   There are ways to respect the seller and still get the insight you need.   Because if you close without talking to key people, you’re inviting 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗻 into your deal. And The Unknown doesn’t care about confidentiality. It only cares about what you didn’t check. Because that is where it can hide until it’s ready to surprise you.   Buyers who take control of this step, Have a better understanding of the key employees, And more confidence in the critical customers sticking around. The easiest way to lose a client is to start selling too early. I’ve been thinking about this a lot while building a business. A prospect says: “How much do you charge?” And the natural reaction is to answer. ₹20,000. ₹50,000. ₹1 lakh. But there’s a problem. At that point, the client is comparing a number. And numbers are easy to compare. Instead, I’m learning to understand what happened before the pricing question. What are they actually trying to fix? What is that problem costing them? What have they already tried? Why hasn't it worked? What happens if they do nothing? Because ₹50,000 can sound expensive... until the problem you're solving is costing the business ₹5 lakh. And ₹10,000 can sound cheap... until the client realizes they don't actually need what you're selling. Good sales isn't about making someone feel that your price is worth it. It's about understanding whether the problem is worth solving in the first place. That changed the way I look at sales. I'm becoming less interested in: “How do I convince this person?” And more interested in: “Is there actually a problem here that I can solve?” Because sometimes the best sales conversation ends with: “I don't think you need us.” And strangely, that can build more trust than any pitch. Sell less. Diagnose better.

Most revenue problems don’t start in sales. They start in 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. Here’s what I see over and over again inside growing B2B companies: • Sales teams are busy • CRM dashboards are busy • Forecasts are regularly updated • Leadership are “close” to the numbers And yet… 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲. When the only time you know what’s really happening is after the fact, every decision becomes reactive by default. • More pressure gets applied. • More inspection. • More tools. • More urgency. • None of which improve predictability. Because the system isn’t failing due to lack of effort. It’s failing because the 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘁 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻. Think you’re hot sh!t in sales? Prove it. Run this 5-step test. No decks. No help. 1) Who is your #1 competitor? ✔️ _______ 2) What you do better than them? ✔️ _______ 3) Who is your target buyer (title, segment)? ✔️ _______ 4) What do you solve uniquely that your competitor can’t? ✔️ _______ 5) What capability does this solve for your target buyer? ✔️ _______ Turn it into a yes/no question that names a real problem. Not a benefit. A problem your buyer would say out loud. Litmus test: - If it isn’t yes/no, it’s fuzzy. - If it sounds like a benefit, it’s not a problem. - If you can’t do this on the fly for your top competitor and buyer, you’re not ready. My example (selling something intangible like sales training): “Do your sales teams struggle to differentiate themselves versus their nearest competitor?” Nine times out of ten, the answer is yes. That’s a problem. That’s 300-level selling. Build a list of these for every key buyer and rival. Use them, refine them, reuse them. One more truth bomb: most marketing still leads with benefits, clichés, and “world’s leading provider of…” Your buyer doesn’t care. Their problem does.

The Secret to Working with an Objection? Hint: Never try to overcome it. You’ve had a great conversation with a prospect. You’ve gotten them to openly discuss their needs, walked them through the value of your product or service, and you feel like you’re in sync. And then—just when you expect a yes—they hesitate: "I just need some time to think about it." Suddenly, momentum stalls. Your brain starts racing. Do they really need time? Are they politely rejecting you? How do you respond without sounding pushy? In Bob Burg’s and my book, "Streetwise to Saleswise: Become ObjectionProof™ and Beat the Sales Blues," we discuss the process for becoming ObjectionProof™, which, when followed, not only resolves the issue but also creates FusionPoints™ by building a bond between you and your prospect. Many sales professionals either panic and start debating—which pushes the prospect away and makes them uncomfortable—or they accept the answer at face value and hope the prospect eventually gets back to them (they rarely do). Neither approach helps. Instead, you need to gently guide them to express their real concern—because until you uncover it, you can’t address it. Next time you hear any objection, try this simple question: "I totally understand. Just out of curiosity—would you mind sharing a bit more of your perspective, so that I can understand better, if I may ask?" This does two things: It signals that you respect their decision-making process, and it encourages them to share what’s really on their mind. When working with your prospect to find a solution to their objection, never try to overcome the objection. Instead, follow our ObjectionProof™ process: •Control your emotions: An objection creates a collision point for you—don’t react from that feeling. •Empathize: Let them know you see their concern as something to consider. •Dig a little deeper: Ask questions to make sure you understand their perspective on any hesitations. •Take them off the hook: Give them an out—a backdoor. Let them know that, even though you’ve been able to successfully help others with those same concerns, there’s always a chance your solution may not be right for them. •Reframe their perspective: Ask permission first, then show them how to view your solution in such a way that it solves their problem. Then, offer your solution, give social proof from happy clients—saying what you suggest does indeed work, and close the sale. This reframes the conversation from an objection to resolving concerns together. This week, practice your response to an objection. Write down two or three of your most common objections. Practice how you’ll ask questions to gain further insight, how you’ll show empathy, take them off the hook, and reframe their perspective. A sales rep refused to close an $8 million deal. Jon Adam asked him why, genuinely confused. Most buyers think the seller holds the power. They don’t! What the seller actually holds is a story they’ve been telling themselves. “I have a great business.” “I’m in the driver’s seat.” “I can wait.” After reviewing hundreds of acquisition attempts, both successful and failed, one pattern shows up again and again: Sellers don’t respond to reality. They respond to perception. And perception is fragile. Here’s the uncomfortable truth most buyers miss: Deals don’t fall apart because of financing. They don’t fail because of structure. They fail because the psychological frame was wrong. The moment a seller believes they’re in control, the deal slows. The moment they understand their options are limited, everything changes. In practice, sellers usually have three paths: Sell as a going concern Liquidate Pass the business to someone who may not want it When that reality becomes clear, confidence softens. Bravado fades. Flexibility appears. That’s when real conversations happen. The best buyers don’t pressure sellers. They reframe the decision. They present two paths: A clean exit today at market reality Or a higher outcome later, earned through partnership, milestones, and value creation Either choice works. Because the power isn’t in the offer. It’s in the framing. Price is rarely the problem. Power almost always is. This is why smart buyers lose deals they thought were “done.” So if you’re evaluating an acquisition right now, ask yourself: Are you negotiating terms — or shaping belief? Have you ever watched a deal slow down the moment the seller thought they had leverage?
