Mentoring on the Mainframe Your junior or midlevel systems programmer knows there is a problem. They are “pretty sure” they know what they need to do, but they want to make sure they don’t make a mistake. They spend several hours looking through Redbooks.   Look through system documentation trying to determine if the fix they have in mind is the correct one. Is this PTF going to impact production? They are talking to IBM support to verify that what they are about to implement won’t impact production. But they still have doubts. Your sys progs wish that they could talk with someone that can look at the problem they are facing and let them know if they are doing the right thing. Let them know they won’t cause a Sev1. If your systems programmers are struggling a bit and need a little support, reach out to me. Been using EMR Serverless a good bit lately and here are some opinions: The Good - Quick startups; when I submit a job, its up and running in about 3 minutes or less - standard spark; does not have the extra wrapper stuff that Glue jobs have; this makes local dev and testing a lot easier and more portable - security is straight forward; start job as an IAM role; role then needs proper permissions to assume various database roles, read/writes to s3; no confusion there The Ugly - class path resolution in EMR serverless is terrible. If you want to have a folder structure such as: src/main |----etl |----data ...In the ETL and data sub folders, you have to add code at the top of each module for a sys path addition. - additionally, I spent probably 4 hours debugging an issue where it said it could not find module "ETL", which was a sub folder I had with some code. What fixed that? Adding an stub/empty __init__.py file. And I was not using classes because this was simple movement of data from point A to point B, no multiple instances, no state required. God only knows why EMR is too dumb to find these modules without that init stub. ...maybe I'm holding it wrong. Needless to say, what took me several hours in EMR would have taken me probably 20 minutes in #databricks notebooks. There is a very strong and clear reason why the masses are gravitating to the databricks notebook experience...it just works. ...and yea, you can call it a skill issue if you'd like 😄. It's 2025 and I should not have to burn countless cycles just to get code that I know works to run in an environment. That is an utter waste of time that can be better spent delivering real value. </endOfRant> #dataengineering #databricks #aws

For years, we treated "good code" as optional. Tests? Nah, I have to ship. Types? I know what I'm doing. Docs? It's all in my head. It is counterintuitive, but agentic coding forces us to pay the "best practice tax" we've all been dodging for decades. It is now the most valuable debt your eng org can pay off. Quick question 👀 Do you know the real cost of one in-house developer? Not salary. Everything around it. Most teams don’t. Here’s the part that usually gets missed: ✓ sourcing + interviews ✓ onboarding & ramp-up time ✓ payroll, taxes, benefits ✓ HR, legal, compliance ✓ replacement risk when it’s not the right fit Reality: → One in-house hire often costs 1.7–2.2× the base salary per year. → And productivity? 8–12 weeks at best. You don't need to hire a software farm for anything anymore. You need one developer who sits next to you for 6 weeks and learns how your business runs. Not how it looks in a deck. How it actually runs. The messy inbox system. The Notion doc nobody follows. The 4-step process your EA does manually every morning. A good AI developer, someone who works in n8n, Claude, and modern automation tools, turns that into systems that run without you. We placed one with a 12-person e-commerce brand. In 8 weeks he'd automated their order exception workflow, their influencer outreach follow-up, and their weekly reporting. The admin team is being trained in AI. Those that don’t adopt are gone. 3 tasks. Each one was eating 6-8 hours a week from someone on the team. That’s money in your pocket. 416h per year. That’s almost a full quarter's worth of work. A dev shop's savings don't matter if they can't ship. Ours do.
