Jeffrey Dates reposted thisJeffrey Dates reposted thisWhat happens when you give a director with Pixar and ILM experience full control over an AI animation pipeline? Spoiler: nobody was sitting around typing descriptions into a text box. On Star Rifter, every shot was driven by acting performances captured on phones, 3D camera blocking in Maya, trained character models built from hand-refined designs, and art-directed master keyframes that locked the look before animation began. Director-first, all the way through. Colin Brady brought feature-film animation instincts to every frame, and none of that was negotiable. Eye lines, performance nuance, composition. He acted out scenes himself, recruited his daughter, and built a puppet to choreograph an alien sidekick. The conditions were scrappy, but the bar was high. The AI handled the rendering, simulation, and environmental detail. The humans handled the soul. We broke down the full pipeline in a new case study, from pre-production through delivery, including how Floyo gave the team a shared layer for collaborating around open-source workflows. The workflows are actually runnable right on the page, so you can try them yourself. We’re also going deeper on all of this live in LA on April 17 with Colin, hosted by Floyo and Alibaba Cloud / Wan with Xavier Lou Michael Montoya Fajin H. The best part? The generation is incredibly fast, and you don’t need a supercomputer to run it. ⚠️ Important: I am providing this software "as is." This is an R&D project that I’m sharing with the community. Feel free to fork it, improve it, and adapt it to your needs. The "Free" vs. "Pro" Difference: While this tool is fun for experiments, it has limitations. This Free Tool: 1 minute of 4DGS = ~90 GB. It’s also quite noisy. Professional Service: If you need high-end, highly optimized 4DGS for XR/VR headsets, contact me. With Gracia we deliver 1 minute of 4DGS at just 1-2 GB with clean, production-ready quality. 💻 How to get the Free Tool: 1. Windows Executable (.exe): Download the pre-built version here. Note: It takes a long time to launch because it has to load the heavy Apple Sharp data. It might not work on every machine (I only tested it on mine). 👉 https://lnkd.in/daJ8KdyA 2. Source Code (GitHub): Want to run it on Linux/Mac or fix bugs? Here is the repo. Tip: Even if you don't know how to code, you can easily install and run this using the Cursor Agent. 👉 https://lnkd.in/d58yUBqt Big thanks to @Bernardo A. for the original idea! The conversation explores how brands can create “ownable originality” in a world saturated with content, why taste and perspective matter more than ever, and how Versus approaches building culturally resonant work that people actually connect with. Justin also shares how AI is being integrated inside the modern creative studio, not as a replacement for creativity, but as a tool to accelerate ideas, streamline production, and push craft further. Before today, games were monuments - huge projects made by hundreds of people over the course of years. Games were fixtures, experiences you'd buy, collect, return to. That's changing. Now, games can be made to order, served up hot. Games can be alive. Games can be bespoke. Games can be targeted, timely, and topical. The game can be *about* what you care about, it can be *about* what's going on in the world, and it can be *about* who you are and how you fit into that world. Games can now be a conversation between the designers and the players, an ongoing, shifting, evolving dialog. Now games can live where you live, as easily embedded as a Youtube video or Instagram post. Games can make the environment *around them* more fun, more engaging more rewarding, more fun to return to. It's a tiny shift, but one that's going to shift the entire entertainment world. This is our debut title. We've got hundreds more about to be unleashed. This is the start of the next chapter in gaming. Big thanks to our team - Elliot Wolf and Andrew A., the best partners I could dream of working with, plus all of our engineers and creatives who've been dedicating their lives to this new way of bringing ideas to audiences. Jeffrey Dates liked thisJeffrey Dates liked thisOpen AI just released their new flagship image model called "GPT Image 2" and to test it out I made this short called "Model Extraction." To me, the most important advancement here is how it handles rendering text. This film only breifly showcases it's capabilities but I was impressed by the clarity of the text on the terminal and on the virtual HUD at the end. Also to be fair the video model kind of messes with the text in it's own way. If you want to learn more about the model and how I put together this short, I made a full breakdown on the fal YouTube channel - https://lnkd.in/eakC3GVk

Jeffrey Dates liked thisJeffrey Dates liked thisAs an Unreal Engine developer and filmmaker I've been experimenting with a lot of generative AI tools. I'm happy to showcase a new image model called "PATINA" that can generate 8K seamless PBR textures from a text prompt or image. This is a REALLY simple example in Unreal Engine but I think it's clear how powerful and empowering a tool like this is for artists. For simple projects this could be the final texture but if you are a professional environment artist this could just be a starting point or an extra material you blend together with others. The model is available now on fal and 1K textures cost less than 10 cents. Direct link in comments.

I built a tool I wish existed when I started working in virtual production. 🎬 One of the most frustrating gaps in any VP or Techviz pipeline — only you know exactly what your virtual camera sees, but there's no clean, accurate, renderable way to show it to the rest of the team. Debug overlays don't render. Manual setups take too long. And guessing is never good enough when production decisions depend on it. So I spent my nights and weekends solving it. 𝗖𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗙𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗺 is now live on Fab — a native UE5 plugin that gives your cine camera a physically accurate, fully renderable frustum in the scene. Driven by real sensor and lens data. One click. No guesswork. No manual setup. Just the exact field of view — visible, accurate, and ready to render. ✅ 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿-𝗮𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 ✅ 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 ✅ 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗸 This one is for the technical directors, previs artists, VP supervisors, and production designers who are tired of approximating what the camera sees. UE 5.6 and 5.7. Available now on Fab🔗 https://lnkd.in/dfd2XGFM #UnrealEngine #VirtualProduction #TechViz #Previs #CineFrustum #UE5 #FilmTech #RealTimeFilm #Fab #CinematicTools #VFX

Your VFX shot is only as good as its anchor. This before & afters piece explains why. The article revisits the on-set 'stuffie'—the physical stand-in for a digital effect. These aren't just placeholders. They are essential tools for grounding the final image in reality. The lesson for filmmakers and builders is straightforward. Successful digital work needs a physical reference. It’s about integration, not just replacement. A few points the article makes clear: Give actors a real eyeline. A tennis ball is better than empty space. Give the lighting department a real object to light. This data is what sells the CGI. Give the whole crew a shared physical target. It focuses the work. Tech doesn't replace craft. It builds on it. Check the full article here: https://lnkd.in/g37a-s6u

High-end real-time visuals aren’t about pushing complexity. They’re about controlling it. Every technical choice impacts performance, timelines, and long-term flexibility. That’s why I favor texture projection workflows over unnecessary geometric complexity and UV mapping. This preserves visual quality while keeping scenes efficient, scalable, and adaptable, even late in production. Optimization, at this level, isn’t a technical constraint. It’s a creative advantage. Choosing the simplest path is often what enables the most refined result. #RealTimeVisuals #DigitalEnvironments #ProductionWorkflow #UnrealEngine

Saying something has "No CGI" or "No VFX" in a film/show is not cool, especially when there's obvious CGI/VFX in them and there are even credits countering these statements. You're essentially insulting and slapping an entire hard-working department in the face and seemingly trying to discredit and erase them. We are here, we always have been, so please for the love of filmmaking, stop this trend. We can all appreciate practical approaches, but VFX exists in ways that many people forget so please remember that we're all collaborating artists and we all deserve respect for one another's craft without trying to erase each other's contributions. #vfx #filmmaking #television #visualeffects

Director Alfonso Cuarón and Re-recording Mixer Skip Lievsay collaborated closely to craft the haunting and immersive soundscape of Gravity, pushing the boundaries of cinematic audio to depict the eerie vastness of space. With no air in space to carry traditional sound, the team leaned into sonic experimentation—using vibrations through suits, internal body perspectives, and carefully layered musical elements to convey tension, isolation, and motion. Cuarón’s vision for a visceral, subjective experience was realized through Lievsay’s mix, which blurred the line between sound design and score, creating a dark, disorienting aural environment that mirrored the emotional and physical chaos unfolding onscreen. Their innovative approach earned widespread acclaim, redefining how silence and sound could be used to heighten drama in a space film. 🎥 Watch full videos 🎧 Subscribe to our Podcast ✉️ Join our Industry Email List 👉 Visit https://lnkd.in/gJpF7v5a

🎁 Free Scan #1 of 10 is here! (new pack) 🚀 Production-ready asset for Virtual Production, pre and post-production. Over the next 10 weeks, I'll be releasing a new, hyper-detailed 3DGS scan each week for you to use in your projects. This is a continuation of our large library of assets for the film industry. We're starting with this beauty: ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dw_xhXRn Want access to our entire, constantly growing library of free scans? Let me know, and I'll send you the link. I share goodies like this in almost every post, so stay tuned! Why is 3DGS the new reality for filmmaking? This isn't just "another technology"; it's a fundamental shift. Instead of spending weeks on pre-production, imagine this: ✅ Pre-production in hours, not days: We scan a complex location in a couple of hours. The director and DP can "walk" through it in VR the same day, planning every shot. ✅ No more "plastic" look: The main pain point of VP is the "game engine feel" of virtual sets. Our scans are a direct capture of the real world. We use a hybrid approach: LiDAR for huge spaces and custom multi-camera rigs for "hero" assets to ensure every detail is photorealistic. ✅ Seamless Integration: We don't just hand you a.PLY file. We are your R&D team. We'll show you and introduce you to the best solutions and plugins on the market for Unreal Engine, Unity, Nuke, After Effects, and Houdini, so you can painlessly integrate these assets into your pipeline. 🛠️ Hardware: An Honest Conversation XGRIDS scanners in Europe. But I'm not here to just sell you a product. I'm a practitioner, and my job is to help you choose the right tool. ➡️ LiDAR Scanners (XGRIDS): Perfect for massive scenes. But they have their flaws (dynamic range issues, "sky sticking"), which I write about often. If you buy a scanner through us, you get my personal, extensive expertise and consultation on how to work around these issues and achieve ideal quality. ➡️ Custom Rigs: For "impossible" tasks that require maximum detail (like in projects for Apple or Meta), I create unique multi-camera systems. If standard equipment can't do the job, we invent it. 🤝 Let's Build the Future Together! We're looking for interesting teams and projects to collaborate with. If you want to integrate 3DGS/4DGS into your pipeline but don't know where to start, or if you have an ambitious idea that others have dismissed, you've found the right person. Calendar: https://lnkd.in/dX_Gf9G5 Is the xgrids lixel l2 pro price justified for a small studio? Maybe not. Rent it or hire a pro. But if you do huge sites, this lidar for construction is a money printer. Here is the ROI breakdown: https://lnkd.in/dPPg6FQf XGRIDS & Nucleus4D #3DGS #4DGS #VirtualProduction #ImmersiveCinema #VolumetricFilm #LEDStudio #PostProduction #FilmMaking #Teleportour #ShramkoScan #Volinga #xgrids #volumetric #photogrammetry #ShramkoVR #ShramkoCamera #ShramkoSoft

The AI–Copyright Ruling Every VFX Studio Should Care About ⚖️🤖 A landmark federal court decision just reshaped the AI landscape—and if you're in VFX, animation, or post-production, the implications are massive. What Happened U.S. District Judge William Alsup ruled that training AI models on lawfully purchased copyrighted books is "exceedingly transformative" and qualifies as fair use—comparing it to how humans learn from reading. But here's the critical caveat: The court found that acquiring pirated materials remains copyright infringement, regardless of how transformatively they're used. This led to a historic $1.5 billion settlement—roughly $3,000 per pirated work. Two Clear Messages for Studios ✅ The Green Light: Legitimate AI training on licensed content is being protected as transformative fair use—opening doors for innovation. 🚫 The Red Line: Using unauthorized sources carries severe financial and legal consequences, with statutory damages that can reach tens of billions. What This Means for VFX & Post-Production With major studios actively litigating over AI training on film catalogs and image libraries, this ruling sets the precedent for how our industry will navigate AI integration. At 3D Services India, this decision reinforces our core philosophy: 🔹 Innovate responsibly – AI should augment creativity, not exploit it 🔹 Build on legitimate foundations – Only licensed, owned, or clearly permitted datasets 🔹 Protect creators first – Sustainable AI adoption requires respecting IP rights The Bottom Line The AI revolution in VFX is here—but the path forward requires both cutting-edge innovation and ethical foundations. The settlement is likely to serve as a benchmark for other copyright cases against AI companies, making compliance not just ethical, but essential. Working on AI-driven pipelines for pre-viz, VFX, or post? Let's discuss workflows that deliver next-generation results without compromising on creator rights or legal compliance. #AIinVFX #CopyrightLaw #VFXIndustry #Animation #PostProduction #AIEthics #GenerativeAI #3DServicesIndia

One take. Infinite shots. Here’s a first look at our 4D x Gen AI workflow: a knight duel captured in a single volumetric take. This short test showcases our hybrid production pipeline, combining: ⚔️ Real-actor volumetric capture (live performance → 3D virtual asset) 🏰 Virtual environments built in 3D ✨ AI-powered rendering for enhanced textures and realism What makes it unique - One single take for any camera angle: no cuts, no continuity issues - Full relighting flexibility in post-production - No heavy sets, lighting rigs, camera gear, or large crews needed This first sequence was shot in one take: the entire framing, lighting, and camera work were done after the shoot, in full 3D. We’re still early in our R&D journey, but the potential is clear: a new creative freedom for filmmakers, at a fraction of traditional costs. Stay tuned - more experiments are on the way. DaVinci Resolve 20.1 is live, and it just made immersive workflows real. If you edit, grade, do VFX, or mix audio, this update is worth opening Resolve for. This application provides native Apple Immersive Video support, enabling users to edit, color, add visual effects, mix spatial audio, and deliver content for Apple Vision Pro seamlessly within a single application. Quick highlights you can actually use: - Apple Vision Pro monitoring + Immersive Viewer: Pan, tilt, and roll immersive clips on your monitor or stream directly to Vision Pro for real-time previews. - Spatial audio support in Fairlight: Apple Spatial Audio Format support and 3D panning tools enable true spatial mixes, ideal for immersive storytelling and live performance work. - Fusion & AI upgrades: Magic Mask improvements, a new 3D title, USD-friendly VFX tools, lens-space corrections, and immersive patcher utilities. - Better VFX pipeline for stereoscopic/immersive footage. Newsshooter offers enhanced editor usability and a free version. It includes MultiText character and paragraph styling, CSV import for column-aligned text, improved safe-area tools, clip compositions that respect timeline resolution, and higher-precision timeline support. Why this matters: You no longer need 3 or 4 apps to build immersive experiences. Resolve is stepping up as a single platform to create spatial video and spatial audio, from ingest to final delivery. That changes how teams plan immersive projects and lowers the barrier for creators. #DaVinciResolve #ImmersiveVideo #AppleVisionPro #SpatialAudio #PostProduction #editingworkflow #videoeditordxb #dxbvideoeditor #creativecontent #editingupdates #softwareupdate
