This may be something the pandemic taught us: How to thrive in smaller configurations, caring for ourselves and others with our smallest actions, the places where our sphere of control meets our talents. It’s a reminder: even when we feel helpless, we have choices. As Monna W. said in our latest newsletter, “I think micro-thriving is something humans do naturally. Working on this piece with Sam Landenwitsch was a fun new angle: What can independent consultants, who don't have managers, borrow from management to make their biggest impacts? One idea: Add a human! If you're putting something off, tell someone (whose opinion you value) you'll get it to them by Friday, and ask them to bug you if you don't. The link is in the comments

Jakada Imani reacted on thisJakada Imani reacted on thisJean Wilson Brutus fled Haiti's political violence seeking safety, stability, and the American Dream. A 41-year-old asylum seeker, Jean was abducted by immigration agents on December 11 and experienced a "medical emergency" at the GEO Group-run Delaney Hall facility. By December 12, he was pronounced dead. Jean’s family only learned he had been detained at all when they received notification of his death. They described Jean as “remarkably healthy" with no history of cardiovascular issues. With ICE offering only the vague label of "natural causes" and a private prison company refusing to answer questions, Jean’s family is demanding accountability and asking how a loved one who entered a detention facility healthy could have been taken from them forever so quickly. “We are committed to finding out what happened to him, not just for our family but for everyone in our country living in fear of masked federal agents coming to take them or their loved ones away from their homes and families,” his family said. That it could now be used as the currency to buy our people back. That they were placing it in our hands as a symbol of our worth. I have been leading for more than twenty years. Nothing prepared me for what it felt like to finally be the one being held. Black leaders need spaces that replenish us, not just develop us. This is part one of a three-part series on what February 2026 in South Africa taught me about care, freedom, and what we deserve as leaders.
