Erich Pyles, DEL, MS, CSP, CHST, CESCO, CRAME, REP shared this𝐃𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐎𝐛𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 – 𝐁𝐲𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 According to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data, more than 50,000 workplace injuries (approximately 116–120 per day or one every 10 minutes) occur annually in the U.S. due to falling objects. Let these numbers sink in. These incidents, often termed "struck by falling object," are a leading cause of workplace injuries, with ~200–300 workers being killed by falling objects each year. The actual number of incidents may be higher, as many near misses or smaller, non-fatal events may go unreported. The majority of these incidents are due to a lack of “control” measures. There may be controls in place, however, many are considered second and third-tier controls, not primary controls. The lack of implemented “primary” (energy controlling measures) controls has a significant impact on workers, creating what we call SIFs (serious injuries and fatalities). These injuries far surpass the worker, they impact families. In today’s construction industry, or any industry for that matter, dropped object protection needs to be part of the planning phase, and implemented. Stop taking the cheaper, faster, time pressure alternatives, which lead to bypassing safety to increase production. We need to STOP relying on administrative controls (barricades, signs [secondary control]) alone, and START looking at elimination or engineering controls (tool tethers, pearl weave netting on MEWPs and overhead work platforms) as a “primary” means of control. Justin Molocznik MS CSP CHST (2024) does an excellent job highlighting that trust is both relational and operational. It is shaped in moments, how leaders respond to concerns, how consistently they follow through, and whether employees feel safe enough to speak up without fear. The connection drawn between trust and psychological safety is particularly impactful, emphasizing that without trust, even the most well-designed safety programs will struggle to gain traction. The key takeaway is clear; systems don’t drive culture, relationships do. And those relationships are built, or broken, in everyday interactions. While traveling this week, I overheard two individuals discussing leadership, and one stated, “We will soon face a leadership shortage.” I am not sure if they were talking about their organization or “leadership” holistically. Nonetheless, it got me thinking. We should not be facing a leadership shortage. What we are facing is a leadership development failure driven, in part, by protective ego. Additionally, according to a Forbes article (July 2025), “many companies still rely on outdated leadership development programs that don’t prepare employees for the challenges of modern leadership roles.” When leaders prioritize personal recognition over collective growth, they unintentionally create bottlenecks in capability, decision-making, innovation, sustainability, and capacity. Knowledge is withheld instead of transferred. Opportunities are controlled rather than shared. The result is a generation of professionals who are experienced in execution but underdeveloped in leadership. True leadership is not measured by how indispensable you are, but by how effectively you prepare others to succeed without you. Legacy is built through empowerment, not control. To improve effectiveness in developing the next generation of leaders: 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩: Treat your role as a temporary responsibility to grow others, not a position to protect. 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲: Create structured opportunities for emerging leaders to think, decide, lead, and fail, with support, not interference. I had always hoped that the Energy-Based Safety book would serve a broader audience that includes architecture, engineering, management, and business. That is why I am excited to share that Engineering News-Record (ENR) featured Energy-Based Safety in a recent book review (link in comments). With a readership of more than 550,000 professionals across the built environment, ENR is arguably the most important platform to expand reach. The review is thoughtful and well-researched. I was particularly honored by Richard Korman’s closing line: “This book belongs on a shelf with prior safety classics that broke new ground.” I could use your help to extend the reach even further. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 --> From 2011–2019, 344 U.S. workers died from environmental heat exposure, with dehydration often a contributing factor. --> Between 1992–2022, nearly 1,000 occupational heat-related deaths occurred, and construction alone accounted for ~34% of those fatalities, despite representing only ~6% of the workforce. --> On average, ~40 workers die annually from heat-related causes, though experts agree this is likely underreported. --> OSHA also reports ~2,700 cases annually that result in lost workdays due to heat illness. https://lnkd.in/eTa57XpT Research shows dehydration contributes to cognitive impairment, fatigue, musculoskeletal injuries, and kidney disease, all of which increase incident risk on job sites. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐇𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 Dehydration is not just a health issue; it is a risk multiplier. As fluid loss increases: 1.) Cognitive performance declines (decision-making, reaction time) 2.) Physical strain increases (higher heart rate, fatigue) 3.) The likelihood of errors, near misses, and serious incidents rises 𝐁𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐨𝐦 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐞 Hydration is one of the simplest and most effective controls we have: --> Water + Rest + Shade is not a slogan, it’s a life-saving system --> Proactive hydration can significantly reduce both high-energy incidents and fatal outcomes 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲 Heat-related illnesses are not rare events, there are thousands of OSHA-recordable cases every year, with dehydration often as a contributing factor. Yet even these numbers are under reported, underestimating the true risk exposure on job sites. On a recent trip, somewhere between the noise of the terminal and the quiet hum at cruising altitude, I opened Energy-Based Safety for the third time. Each read feels different, less about absorbing new information and more about seeing familiar ideas through a sharper lens shaped by experience. As I worked through Matthew Hallowell's expertise, perspective, and research on energy and risk, I found myself reflecting on how often we normalize exposure simply because it is routine. Travel has a way of slowing you down just enough to reconnect concepts and think deeper about real-world application. By the time the plane landed, I wasn’t just revisiting a book, I was recalibrating how I think about controlling what truly has the potential to harm. Sometimes, the best part of the journey isn’t the destination, it is the clarity you gain along the way. #EnergyBasedSafety #Leadership

They hired me to observe, identify findings, and give recommendations on making the class better. Therefore, I want to discuss an adult learning principle to help your training be more effective for participants. 🧑🔧👩🔧Adults are experienced based - for this principle, conduct a case study where professionals analyze a past project failure and identify better methods for the future. This allows participants to discuss their experiences and use them to evaluate the case study. Happy teaching!

Thank you, again to Brett Williams and the Killeen ISD Education Foundation Alumni Association for the selection. What made this moment emotional was looking out and seeing my family and friends there. The people who have prayed for me, supported me, encouraged me, and stood beside me through every season. Thank you for loving me the way you do. I felt it… and I’ll never forget it. This moment may have my name on it, but it carries all of you with it. Thank you to the teachers from elementary school to high school who were helping to shape me into who I am today: Ms. Maston, Coach Carolyn Smith, Ms. Eltra Younblood, Lois Rector Davis, and Coach June James It was a night I could reflect on my younger self, and how KISD was my foundation. They just want to oppose. If you’re against data centers while actively using technology every day, there’s a disconnect. The same infrastructure you’re pushing back on is what enables the tools, platforms, and systems you rely on. You can't separate the two. The bigger issue is we’re not doing a good enough job explaining what this industry actually represents. Data centers aren’t just buildings. They’re careers, economic opportunity, and critical infrastructure that powers how we live and work. Leaders in this space need to step up and own that narrative. Because if we don’t, the conversation gets shaped by people who aren’t offering solutions, just resistance to progress.
