A new Brooklyn library is set to become one of the first public mass timber buildings in New York City—highlighting a growing push toward low-carbon construction in civic projects. The Brooklyn Public Library’s new Canarsie branch will use cross-laminated timber, offering a more sustainable alternative to traditional steel and concrete while creating a warm, light-filled interior. The two-story, roughly 11,000-sq-ft facility will also double the space of the previous branch and include dedicated areas for children, teens and adults, along with a maker space, recording studio and community meeting rooms. Designed by Studio Joseph, the project reflects both environmental goals and community-driven design, with input from local residents helping shape the layout and programming. As mass timber gains traction in dense urban markets, projects like this could help pave the way for broader adoption in public infrastructure. Rendering: Studio Joseph 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gSYuWyeE
