The proposed 2026 City of Chicago budget faces serious challenges in closing an over $1 billion funding gap. While many aldermen have raised concerns about various elements of the proposal, one key issue—the significant reduction in funding for the Chicago Public Library system—has received little attention until recently. In a recent Chicago Tribune Op-Ed, Alderwoman Samantha Nugent strongly opposes the proposal to cut the Chicago Public Library’s Collection Budget—the funds used to purchase books, e-books, and other materials for patrons—from $10 million to $5 million. This cut would drastically undermine one of the Library’s core missions: providing equitable access to relevant reading and learning resources for all Chicago residents. Nugent closes her Op-Ed with a powerful call to action: “Let’s restore CPL’s funding and staffing levels and send a clear message that Chicago invests in its people — in their growth, their creativity, and their right to knowledge.
