Throughout his illustrious career, Harvie has recorded with a plethora of jazz luminaries including Michael Brecker, Paquito D’Rivera, Chick Corea, Kenny Barron, John Scofield, Sheila Jordan, James Moody, Yusef Lateef, and the Manhattan Transfer, just to name a few, leaving an indelible mark on the global jazz scene. His dynamic bass lines and innovative approach to rhythm have earned him widespread acclaim among critics and audiences alike. He has released 21 recordings as a leader on major labels, 20 as a co-leader and over 400 as a sideman. His most recent album is Bright Dawn. During our podcast, we feature a song from that recording, Voice in the Sky. When I came across this photo recently of the cover of the organization's magazine, it made me think about something important: Most people see the cover. They don't see the years of volunteer service behind it. They don't see the meetings, the travel, the difficult conversations, the leadership decisions, the relationships built, or the commitment to a cause bigger than themselves. A cover is simply a snapshot. A reputation is built over time. In today's world, many people focus on visibility. Visibility matters. But visibility without substance is fleeting. The opportunities that have come my way throughout my career, whether in corporate leadership, speaking, writing, or serving organizations I care about, have rarely been the result of self-promotion alone. They came from showing up consistently, doing the work, and creating value for others. The magazine cover was never the goal. The impact was. It's a reminder that your personal brand isn't built in a single moment. It's built through hundreds of moments that eventually become your legacy.
