David Reeder reposted thisDavid Reeder reposted thisDefining "Good" Connectivity: A New Global Standard for Wi-Fi Design 🌐📶 As we evolve toward 6 GHz and Wi-Fi 7, network complexity is skyrocketing. Yet, the way we design and deploy these networks remains fragmented. We need to move beyond "rules of thumb" to ensure that theoretical speeds translate into consistent, real-world performance. 🚀 That’s why Ookla and the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) are joining forces to develop the industry’s first Wi-Fi Design Standard. 💡Why This Matters Now: Consistency: A vendor-neutral framework to eliminate fragmentation and guesswork. Real-World Performance: Bridging the gap between protocol standards and user experience. Future-Proofing: Aligning design practices with the demands of next-gen deployments. 🔥Lead the Change We are inviting network designers, operators, and vendors to help define the benchmarks that will shape the future of connectivity. David Reeder liked thisDavid Reeder liked thisAcross the OECD, fixed broadband has decisively outpaced mobile over the past five years, as accelerated fibre rollouts have widened the performance gap faster than 5G deployment has been able to close it, according to Speedtest data across 38 countries. Fibre’s share of OECD fixed broadband subscriptions rose from 28% in 2019 to 47% by end-2024, overtaking legacy fixed technologies as DSL and cable continued to decline. Fibre subscription volumes grew by nearly 15% a year over the period, with the transition increasingly reinforced by copper retirement and fibre migration policies in advanced markets. France began phasing out ADSL in January 2025 and will close its copper network entirely by 2030, with FTTH passing 93.5% of premises and carrying 80% of fixed lines by late 2025 according to ARCEP. As the slow DSL tail migrates onto higher-speed fibre tiers, it is the median (not just the peak p90) that is dragged upward. France is the starkest case, with its median fixed connection speeds rising roughly tenfold since 2020 (to ~348 Mbps) while median mobile reached only ~130 Mbps. The former has been helped by exceptionally strong uptake of modern Wi-Fi standards (6/6E/7) in the CPE base, driven by the "box war" competition unique to the French ISP model. Mobile has no equivalent one-off lever (i.e., gains usually more geographically mixed and depend on radio density, device and tariff mix, etc.) Its median is gated by spectrum and capacity rather than last-mile upgrades, and Europe's fragmented mid-band 5G deployment (against the deeper mid-band and carrier aggregation seen in markets like the US and Gulf, which now run several times faster) means gains often accrue incrementally rather than in a single jump (apart from select examples like Poland, Netherlands where mid-band came late and was deployed widely overnight). Greece remains mobile-ahead (median mobile ~108 Mbps versus ~92 Mbps fixed) as a fibre laggard, with FTTH still covering less than half of households and mobile, FWA and Starlink filling the gap, though its fibre subscriptions are among the fastest-growing in the OECD (+140% over five years, aided by Recovery-fund subsidies), so the lead is narrowing. Estonia is the inverse. Despite ~77% FTTH coverage, world-class 5G (increasingly a genuine fixed substitute via 5G FWA) outruns the comparatively modest fixed tiers households actually buy, leaving median mobile (~133 Mbps) above fixed (~94 Mbps). Turkey and Norway both ran mobile ahead of fixed in 2020, but sustained fibre investment has since carried fixed past mobile in both, and even South Korea, with one of the fastest mobile networks globally (~212 Mbps), has seen fixed pull further ahead still (~235 Mbps). Taken together, the number of OECD markets where the median mobile connection beats the median fixed one has drifted down rather than up (from around seven at the end of 2021 to four by the end of 2025), even as absolute mobile speeds rose everywhere.

David Reeder liked thisDavid Reeder liked this"Wireless metrics maven Ookla has been watching developments closely, publishing a report earlier this year detailing global progress toward widespread D2D availability. At SmallSat Europe this week a panel took on the topic of automotive D2D, still just a gleam on the horizon. The panelists noted the imminent arrival of automotive grade D2D but tap-danced around the actual applications - such as emergency response. This left some wondering about customer interest in or even awareness of the value proposition's suitability for cars. That being said, Ookla's data clearly shows a seemingly contradictory sat-cell story unfolding on smartphones around the world. The company paints a picture of limited actual usage and constrained bandwidth even as the market coverage ramps rapidly." David Reeder liked thisDavid Reeder liked thisVietnam 🇻🇳 had no commercial 5G eighteen months ago. By Q1 2026, only South Korea was running faster among the regional 5G markets in our Speedtest Intelligence® analysis. Vietnam's Q1 2026 median 5G download speed: 392.70 Mbps. The regulatory setup did most of the work. Vietnam's MIC ran two 2024 spectrum auctions and gave each of the three operators a contiguous 100 MHz mid-band block. All three networks were on air within five months. By Q1 2026, 5G accounted for 58.9% of mobile Speedtest samples in Vietnam, up from 44.1% a year earlier. LTE share fell over the same period, so users aren't adding 5G alongside 4G — they're moving to it. Cambodia 🇰🇭 took a different route to a similar outcome. The MPTC coordinated a simultaneous January 2026 launch across Smart Axiata, Cellcard, and Metfone, each operator on 100 MHz of identical 3.5 GHz C-band. One quarter in, the country-level 5G median sat at 356.63 Mbps, ahead of more established 5G markets like Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, and Indonesia. Some of that reflects light early-stage load that will ease as adoption broadens. The next few quarters will tell whether the coordinated launch model travels. Laos 🇱🇦 opened the region's commercial 5G era back in January 2024. Services run in Vientiane and a handful of provincial centers, and the Q1 2026 country-level 5G median sits at 79.95 Mbps. Spectrum holdings are comparable to its neighbors. The differences sit downstream — a smaller addressable base, deployments concentrated around the capital, and 5G handset affordability that affects the wider region. Those conditions are shifting, not fixed. Across the three markets, the regulator has done more to shape consumer 5G outcomes than launch chronology. Spectrum policy, the order operators come to market in, and the size of the buyer base do the heavier lifting. Full report covering all three Mekong markets: https://lnkd.in/g9jdGhHH

Collaboration continues to be one of the strongest drivers of innovation in our industry and I'm delighted to see open source communities like the prpl Foundation and RDK integrating our OBUSPA code into their software models. At the Broadband Forum we continue to build the end-to-end architecture in residential gateways for seamless communications in our home broadband networks. Our WT-492 project is helping standardize software containerization and deliver app-store-like functionality right at the edge of the network. In turn, service providers can offer differentiated and value-added services at the touch of a button with software added to CPE easily rather than waiting to upgrade any firmware. "With costs going up across the board, one notable exception is broadband costs, according to a new report from USTelecom." "According to the report, real prices for 100–940 Mbps connections — the most popular offerings — dropped 6% last year and are down 43.6% in real terms since 2014. The steepest drops were in the 100–249 Mbps tier, with a 17.2% real-term drop in one year and a 39.6% drop over two years. Costs for the increasingly popular gigabit plans also fell for both time frames, dropping by 4.9% in real terms in 2025 and by 48.9% since 2016." #broadband #affordability #value https://lnkd.in/dtVbCEYb

🚧 Underground Fiber Builds: Precision Is the New Speed Proud to share our recent customer success story featured in Broadband Communities Magazine: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/esNyZXEw This case study—made possible by UCL Swift Americas —highlights a shift we’re seeing in underground network design: 💡 Moving from excess… to precision. Instead of relying on traditional slack-heavy deployments, this customer transitioned to a cut-to-length strategy powered by custom connectivity. The impact? ➡️ Eliminated unnecessary slack and material waste ➡️ Reduced handling, storage, and field variability ➡️ Simplified installs with highly reliable outcomes And just as important… 🚨 A novice technician can master the process and operate independently in less than an hour! That’s not just efficiency—that’s workforce scalability. When you remove complexity from the field, you don’t just build faster—you build smarter, more reliable, with consistency across every crew. ✔ Cleaner installs ✔ Faster cycle times ✔ Reduced rework And ultimately… 👉 You’re future-proofing the network with factory-level back reflection performance (-60 dB or better) built into every connection. In a market defined by labor constraints and aggressive deployment timelines, the advantage goes to operators who engineer for execution—not just capacity. If you’re rethinking how to eliminate “Slack Mountains” and bring first time right (FTR) to your builds, let’s connect! #UCLSwiftAmericas #Fiber #Broadband #FTTx #XGSPON #NetworkDeployment

MVNOs Outpace Major Carriers in 2026 ACSI Customer Satisfaction Study The latest data from the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI®) Telecommunications, Cell Phone, and Smartwatch Study 2026 reveals a significant shift in consumer preferences, with smaller wireless operators outpacing the traditional carriers. Satisfaction with wireless service providers overall advanced 3% to a record-high #ACSI score of 77. This industrywide improvement was propelled primarily by the mobile virtual network operator (#MVNO) segments, which are also in the US, increasingly winning over consumers compared to traditional mobile network operators (MNOs). Value MVNOs emerged as the highest-rated segment in the wireless category, earning an impressive satisfaction score of 79 after a 1% gain. Full-service MVNOs experienced the most substantial growth, surging 4% to reach a score of 77. In contrast, traditional MNOs posted smaller gains, improving just 1% to a score of 76. This places major carriers behind both value and full-service MVNOs in terms of customer satisfaction, signaling that the flexible business models of virtual networks are resonating strongly with subscribers. The stagnation in MNO differentiation appears to be a driving factor behind the rise of MVNOs. While network fundamentals improved across the board, the scores for national MNO brands are clustered tightly, ranging from 76 for Verizon and AT&T to 78 for T-Mobile Because strong call quality and reliable network capabilities are viewed as core expectations rather than premium selling points, consumers are looking beyond the infrastructure owners for better overall value and tailored experiences. According to Forrest Morgeson, Associate Professor of Marketing at Michigan State University and Director of Research Emeritus at the ACSI, providers are finally paying off on the basics like network performance, fewer outages, and reliable core functions. However, Morgeson notes that as the baseline rises across wireless services, the definition of good enough keeps changing. With new competitors entering the market, providers cannot coast on fundamentals alone. MVNOs seem to be capitalizing on this shift by leveraging the reliable infrastructure of MNOs while delivering the superior value, digital interactions, and ease of use that modern consumers demand. https://lnkd.in/g_sG-hJv The ACSI Telecommunications, Cell Phone, and Smartwatch Study 2026 is based on 26,963 completed surveys. Customers were chosen at random and contacted via email between April 2025 and March 2026. #CustomerSatisfaction

Extending Differentiated Connectivity to Rural America Earlier today, I delivered my keynote presentation at the Competitive Carriers Association Mobility and Connectivity Show in Louisville, Kentucky America has come a long way with the adoption of 5G for Mobile and Fixed Broadband services: 🎯 5G connected 78% of all NASmartphones by the end of 2025 🎯 Fixed Wireless has captured ALL Fixed Broadband growth over the last 16 quarters. That is good news for the opportunity Ericsson articulated in 2021, "Closing ALL American divides this Decade." Still a hard job to close the fixed divide, but closing the mobile divide is progressing towards the target, with just 9% remaining! With a solid 5G network foundation in place, we have seen growing momentum to extend the connectivity value proposition from a universal connectivity, "one slice fits all", to differentiated connectivity that elevates both consumer and business experiences. The initial success for Differentiated connectivity gravitates around: 1️⃣ Fixed Wireless Access - to separate fixed and mobile broadband traffic in networks 2️⃣ Event/location-specific solutions - 104 SuperBowls will soon hit the US, Canada, and Canada in 37 days. 3️⃣ Higher quality video - for communication, entertainment, and production purposes. 4️⃣ Security and Public Safety Advanced networks have evolved into multipurpose networks, capable of supporting new connectivity needs and business models. The business models have evolved in stages, mirroring the gradual increase in network capabilities and improvements in the user experience. So far, Tier-1 Communication Service Providers in the most advanced markets have driven the introduction of differentiated connectivity. We've reached a point where providers with a 5G Stand-Alone network can join the expansion. The second half of the 5G deployment cycle in rural America will focus on closing all digital divides this decade and ensuring 5G networks get their fair share of the action. Fiber continues to expand, but at a slower pace than Fixed Wireless Access. #CCA #MCS2026 #DigitalDivide #DifferentiatedConnectivity Per Wahlén | Bill Chotiner | Arslan Ali | Caroline Caverly Fritz | Tim Donovan | Lucy Hodas

Interoperability Is the New Infrastructure In a crisis, communication breakdowns can cost more than any hardware failure. Interoperability isn’t a buzzword — it’s the backbone of resilience. Every agency, every system, every data stream, must be able to talk to one another when seconds matter most. We see time and again with most after action reports, that communication failures prevented an effective response. See Hurricanes Katrina, Maria, etc. and most recently see Kerr Co. Texas. It’s time to treat interoperability as infrastructure — because without connection, there is no coordination. #Interoperability #Resilience #DataSharing #EmergencyManagement https://bit.ly/3Wq0XEt https://bit.ly/3J21QQI
