I am currently working on a research project that harnesses the core concepts of User Experience Research (UXR) in order to truly reach all students within a classroom as seamlessly as possible. The rationale for this project is I am not satisfied with believing the notion that, in any given school year, teachers will effectively reach 80% of their students and the 20% who don’t reach learning proficiency “are to be expected.” By harnessing UXR, I am able to bridge the gap between the goals of…

  • Photography Portfolio

    -

My hope is not only showcasing work I am passionate and proud of, but to also provide context for the experiences I go through with each project. I primarily shoot black and white film, but I do use digital from time to time. I like to use film when I am trying to tell a story with the photos, whereas digital is used for the “fun” shoots–such as parties, events, and boudoir. Of course, the choice of film or digital is a case by case thing!

  • Resolving Problematic Intradisciplinary Implications In Psychology Through Reform In Data Collection: A Discussion Of Religious Psychology As An Inherently Westernized And Racialized Discipline

    (Master's Thesis)

Is the practice of psychology covertly (or perhaps in some ways overtly) imposing
cultural norms onto individuals whom the data used to formulate theories and methodology of

Is the practice of psychology covertly (or perhaps in some ways overtly) imposing
cultural norms onto individuals whom the data used to formulate theories and methodology of
psychiatric practices does not apply? Furthermore, is this a problem practitioners and scholars of
psychology should repair? What implications might this have on interreligious dialogue and
notions of authenticity as it pertains to psychology and the administration of psychological
counseling? How can we, as students and/or practitioners of psychotherapy and theology,
constructively and creatively come to terms with a practice that has historically been known to
impose cultural norms on to the very people it seeks to help?

(Research project Presented at the American Psychological Society Conference in Washington DC, 2013)

This study was designed in order to study emotional memory and whether or not an emotional charge will affect an individual in an attention task, such as a memory recall test.

In this experiment, participants were instructed to watch a slideshow containing 30 slides with a word superimposed on a face. The slideshow included the four following treatment conditions: Fearful face, fearful word (FF); fearful face, neutral word (FN); neutral face, fearful word (NF); and neutral face, neutral word (NN). After watching the slideshow, all participants were given between 5 to 10 minutes to write down as many words as they could remember. All participants were exposed to all four treatment conditions. Out of all four treatment conditions, we hypothesized that when the word matched the face (FF and NN), participants would be more likely to remember the word superimposed on the face than when the word did not match the face it was paired with (FN and NF).

The results showed that participants did, in fact, remember the words that matched with the face more than the words that did not match. These findings showed that emotional memory and the ability of someone to successfully recall events or, in this case words, depends on the context in which the stimuli is superimposed.

Most studies have been done on the context, or setting such as the room the study is taking place in, and how the context affects how well an individual is able to retain information. This experiment aims to study the effects of the context the word is superimposed on, such as the different faces used in the slideshow. These findings may impact the way we deal with patients suffering from depression as well as understanding emotional memory and cognition, in general.
