Onboarding a new daily performance coaching client today. Here’s his first assignment: “FIRST THING’s FIRST — I want you to keep a list of every process you execute TODAY until our onboarding meeting. For example… here’s a list of the first half of this past Friday from wake-up til about lunch: - [ ] Prepare to Ruck - [ ] Ruck - [ ] Make My Breakfast - [ ] Kitchen Chores - [ ] Plan My Meals - [ ] Make Family Breakfasts - [ ] Shower, Dress, Bedroom Chores - [ ] Coach Client - [ ] Process Improvement (Sales/Marketing) - [ ] Build KPI Dashboard & Improve CRM Database - [ ] Write Content - [ ] Facilitate Meeting Note how there aren’t a list of actions for each process — they’re independent processes.” Why is this where I start with my clients? Because everything *we do* is a process. People regularly say to me that “they want systems & processes.” What they’re really saying is… “How I store information & take action does not maximize what I know that I am (or my business is) capable of.” So we start down the process of improvement: 1. Take inventory of the situation. 2. Get rid of the things that don’t contribute. 3. Standardize the things that do contribute. Make the processes visible. Take inventory: from the time that the client wakes up til we have our onboarding meeting. We can’t figure out where we’re going if we don’t know where we’re at.

Great coaching skills, but no clients. What’s the use? Many coaches fall into the trap of focusing all their time on improving their skills, certifications, and coaching frameworks while neglecting the equally important side of marketing and client acquisition. While mastery of your craft is essential, without clients to serve, your expertise remains unused. Coaching is both a profession and a business, which means your growth depends not only on how great you are at delivering results but also on how effectively you connect with the people who need your help. Spending 100% of your energy on self-improvement creates imbalance; you become skilled but invisible in the marketplace. On the other hand, focusing only on marketing without refining your abilities leads to overpromising and underdelivering. The ideal scenario is to dedicate consistent effort to both: developing your skills while actively promoting your services.
