Some lessons never leave you. My first deployment I was a Supply Chain Management Specialist for the F-22 Raptor. It taught me what zero tolerance for failure really means. Documentation needed to be perfect. Serial numbers matched. Quality certificates attached. Those early morning inspections revealed three truths I'll never forget: → Following protocol builds trust, taking initiative earns respect → True leadership emerges from mastering the basics first → The best decisions balance strict discipline with calculated risks Over a decade later, these same principles drive my business decisions. Leaders who master their craft know every procedure has a purpose. When your supply chain supports defending our country, every decision can mean the difference between mission success and failure. It's always the same story:   Every time problems surface, you throw more inventory at them.   More stock. More buffer. More resources. More "safety."   But you're not solving anything. You're drowning the symptoms.   Let me draw you the River of Waste analogy to explain why:   Imagine your production line as a river where..   +the water level is the amount of inventory +the boat is your department +the rocks are the problems   When inventory is high, everything appears to be running smoothly. Your boat glides over hidden obstacles.   But here's what's happening underneath:   -Quality issues you can't see -Process bottlenecks masked by excess stock -Equipment problems waiting to explode -Waste compounding   Every. Single. Day.   As the water level goes down, the rocks resurface.   As encountering a rock, you can…   -go around the rock -run into the rock -go over the rock -remove the rock   Traditional Trap:   Hit a problem?   Raise the water level. Add more inventory. Hide the rocks.   The Kaizen Way:   Lower the water level deliberately. Expose the rocks. Remove them one by one.   *** TL; TR   Hiding issues can only lead to bigger disasters.   Look for the big rocks.   Pick no more than 3 or 4.   Then, remove the rocks.   One by One. No BS.
