Reverend Bruce Shankar Fern shared thisGreat story about overcoming one's own racists beliefsReverend Bruce Shankar Fern shared thisMy father was a racist. So was my stepdad. Racial slurs were the norm in my household, school, and community. My purchase of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” album was seen as an act of rebellion – I just liked his music. The Army slowly changed my views on race. With 50% of my Basic Training unit diverse, I dared not utter a racial slur. I just didn’t want to get beat up. After graduating basic training, I went to Fort Hood, (ironically named after Confederate General John Bell Hood). I reported to my unit and met my squad leader, physical fitness ability group leader, and platoon sergeant – all three Black Americans. Staff Sergeant Smith, Harris, and Sergeant First Class George became true father figures to me. They had me invest into an Army savings program every paycheck. They made me enroll in Army education where I learned to love learning. Ironically, my Army savings allowed me to pay for my father’s funeral later in life. My savings and learning habits I learned so long ago are still with me today and have been passed on to my children. They coached me to get off my toes when running and how to control my breathing when shooting. They sent me to Army schools. I excelled under their leadership. Then Sergeant Furr, Master Sergeant Lopez, Chief Wong, First Sergeant Randall – none of them cared that I was white and I no longer cared they were not. In fact, they were role models to me. 17 years later, I became the Equal Opportunity Advisor for the Engineer Brigade, working under Lieutenant Colonel Gantt, helping commanders understand their unit climate and took on racism, sexual assault, harassment, and other beliefs that counter the Warrior Ethos. According to the 2023 U.S. Annual Intelligence Community Assessment, “…Racially or Ethnically Motivated Violent Extremists pose the most lethal threat to U.S. persons and interests…” I remember what my father would say about Martin Luther King Jr. Day (and I won’t repeat that here) but I will say this: What we learn, we can unlearn. We can do better. Holidays such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day exist to give each of us an opportunity to reflect. I thank God for the leaders in my life who deprogrammed all that bullsh*t out of me. Love and gratitude to all the change agents, past and present, who work tirelessly to make the American Dream a little more accessible to all. #antiracism #martinlutherkingjr #dei #unlearning

Peters Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center to bring clay classes to women veterans in the area. On February 6 we had our second clay class in partnership with the Bronx VA. Women veterans worked to make and glaze their own heart-shaped trinket dishes as part of National Wear Red Day, which encourages women to wear red as a visible sign of support for heart health awareness. We can’t wait to see the finished pieces! Clay Art Center also held a class for veterans, their families, and caregivers on February 7, at our Port Chester location. The class was open to all veterans in the area. Clay for Veterans is funded in part by Creative Forces®: NEA Military Healing Arts Network, an initiative of the National Endowment in partnership with the U.S. Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs. Founded by Liz Abunaw, the market is designed to meet everyday needs while also addressing the broader impact of food deserts on Black communities. Forty Acres Fresh Market creates local jobs, reinvests in the neighborhood and offers a model for community-centered economic development. The name itself nods to the unfulfilled promise of “40 acres,” reframed here as a modern effort toward ownership, access and sustainability. As cities across the country grapple with inequitable food systems, Forty Acres Fresh Market stands as an example of what’s possible when communities are prioritized and ownership stays local. Personally, this has been a difficult year where we experienced the loss of loved ones, but also brought us a grandson and a granddaughter, and another one anticipated in January. The wheel of life inevitably ticking over. Work-wise, I'm proud to have published my book this year (audiobook currently in production) and to have launched our new audio storytelling initiative, Founders Untold. Christine has continued to excel in her professional voiceover work and overseeing the voice actors and audio production for our StoryStyle audio learning content. We believe the world is at a place where authentic and engaging audio storytelling is in high demand, so we're looking forward to what next year brings. Thank you for your ongoing support and engagement. I hope we can continue to push to make the world a better place in 2026, with love, respect and dignity for all people.

Reverend Bruce Shankar Fern liked thisReverend Bruce Shankar Fern liked thisRetiring from Teaching — Not from Purpose This year, I retired from my role as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychology & Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. My connection to Teachers College began in 1974 as an M.Ed. student in Rehabilitation and Vocational Counseling. In 1996, I co-created the Data-Based Interventions course, which I continued to teach—along with other courses—through this year. It has been one of the great honors of my life to teach, mentor, and learn from so many dedicated and talented students. I am grateful to every colleague and student who trusted me, challenged me, and helped me grow. While I’m retiring from Teachers College, Columbia University, I’m not stepping away from purpose. My work continues through: • Public service as a member of Wilton’s Board of Selectmen • Professional development and advocacy as Co-President of the ATD Connecticut Chapter • Volunteer leadership and civic engagement with organizations that strengthen our community Retirement from teaching is an end of an important phase. I’m looking forward to continuing to learn and make a difference in our world.
