Today, we’re proud to spotlight Bill West, a USC Marshall School of Business alum who joined The Consortium in 1977 and exemplifies the power of long-term commitment and community. From being recruited early in his career to spending 31 years at Mays Chemical Company, Mr. West’s journey reflects what has always made The Consortium special: meaningful connections, lasting relationships, and a network that opens doors across generations. For more than 25 years, Mr. West recruited CGSM students at OP, an extraordinary contribution that has impacted countless fellows and families. We are deeply grateful for his dedication, leadership, and belief in this community. Ratliff Endowed Scholarship at the University of Miami in 2013 because I believe a life-changing education should never be out of reach for a student with the talent and determination to succeed. The stories of scholarship recipients Myles Kaye and Destiny Curry are exactly why I’m glad I did. Myles is triple-majoring in accounting, finance, and marketing, building toward a career in sports finance, and already leading on campus in ways that inspire me. Destiny, who came to UM from The Bahamas, navigated the challenges of being an international student, and is now president of First Gen Canes while envisioning a future in luxury hospitality. Both are already thinking about how they will give back. I sit where I am today because people believed in me and opened doors. This scholarship is my way of doing the same. To every current and future recipient: you belong in every room you walk into. I'm rooting for you. Brett Ashton liked thisBrett Ashton liked thisI attended a joint USC Viterbi School of Engineering and USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy alumni event and enjoyed reconnecting with alumni across multiple generations of University of Southern California Trojans. What I didn't expect was how quickly the conversations would take me back to my own time at USC. I met and caught up with Gary Gitelson, who overlapped with me by a year. We swapped stories about building projects on NachOS in compilers, surviving upper division math classes where average exam scores could land in the 20s to 50s (out of 100, humbling), EE professors who randomly pointed at students to answer questions (tip: don't make eye contact), and learning from Leonard Adleman, co-inventor of RSA cryptosystem, who would walk into class with a giant white book and start teaching algorithms without any prep. We even laughed about Computer Science requiring a foreign language because, at the time, it lived in the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences rather than Engineering. I also enjoyed meeting more alumni and faculty (Nithin Valentine, Peter Lillian, Michael Kanazawa) and learned about the Mark and Mary Stevens' $200M gift to USC's new School of Computing and Artificial Intelligence. The donation will help with recruiting world-class AI researchers and aggressively integrating AI across multiple disciplines, including business, medicine, film, and the arts. Amazing! Taken together, those conversations reminded me that the most challenging problems in my career have rarely been purely technical. They're usually a mix of technology, business, people, and execution. Many of the experiences that felt disconnected as a student turned out to be preparation for exactly that. I left with a deeper appreciation for USC and the community it continues to bring together. Fight on! #USC #TrojanFamily #FightOn #Viterbi

Today I want to celebrate my dad, Gary Simms, retirement after an incredible 38-year career at HP. What makes me most proud isn’t the titles, milestones, or the billions of dollars in business he helped lead , it’s the way he treated people throughout the journey. Humble. Respectful. Steady. Always willing to help others succeed. I’ve had the unique privilege of not only growing up around Compaq/HP, but also working alongside him for nearly 14 years. Watching firsthand how people trusted him, sought out his advice, and genuinely respected him taught me more about leadership than any training ever could. Time and time again, I’d hear the same thing: “Your dad is just one of the good ones.” From the early Compaq days of floppy disks and DOS to leading a $10B+ U.S. distribution business at HP, he worked through every major evolution in technology, all while building an incredible life for our family alongside my mom, who supported every chapter of the journey. Dad/Gary Simms, your career was earned through integrity, hard work, and the way you showed up for people every single day. Your impact goes far beyond business results, it lives in the relationships, mentorship, and legacy you leave behind. Thank you for all you’ve done for our family. Graduation is a time for celebration, a reflection on the completion of a tough journey, and excitement (and perhaps anxiety) about the road ahead. Even after 13 years at USF, graduation never feels routine to me. It is an intensely beautiful and bittersweet moment as we say good luck and farewell to the graduate students who have “lived” with us for 1, 2 or even 3 years. Who have made us laugh, cry, gasp in wonder (and yes frustration), and give thanks for developing deep bonds that have helped us all grow. It’s always so hard to give that last hug and wave goodbye as our students leave the nest of our extended family. It is impossible for me not to get teary-eyed each year. But they can rest assured that we will continue to be here, and that you can come home again. So for now I say, hasta luego. Until next time. No matter where life may take you, know that you remain in our hearts, filled with love and gratitude that you came into our lives, brightened our days with purpose, and reminded us again why we are blessed to do this work.
