This is not what AI should be used for and it especially shouldn't be used in a field where professionals and professional publications already guide our recommendations. I will not be using AI recommendations for either purchasing or reader's advisory and I would recommend that no one else does either. Let us not forget the lesson learned by the Chicago Sun Times when they published as AI generated summer reading recommendation list full of books that don't exist.

AI (and human) slop in Google Scholar is exacerbating propagation of ghost references. Also known as hallucinated sources, this problem is 'a tale as old as time' in information science. Information literacy professionals need to understand and be able to explain the differences between academic Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) systems and Google Scholar. Thank you Aaron Tay for writing about this topic!

This is a nice piece on ways AI-produced materials are infiltrating libraries, things to watch for, and relevant issues like copyright. Nick Tanzi has good points on policy and what to look for. The implications of mass produced AI materials will certainly inform curation practices going forward. As AIs get "better", other issues, perhaps more subtle, but of interest in the larger computational creativity community, like "authenticity" of the writer, and possibly the illustrator and narrator -- do they speak from authentic life experience, perhaps on culturally sensitive issues (see comments for a link to a paper) -- will become more relevant. Clifford Anderson and I write about some of these matters.

We have identified that this is the result of aggressive Gen AI crawling activity. As such we have had to try to disable the ability for AI -harvesters to access content from our repositories, via IP range blocking, geographical blacklisting, implementing limits to slow down crawlers and using robots.txt files. We acknowledge that this approach is not consistent with our open access policy which should require us to permit machine access to our content. Our limiting activity is not 100% fool-proof, and is a temporary measure to give services breathing space to perform while a longer term solution is worked out by software providers and the community. This approach also has the added benefit of helping to assuage authors fear of losing control of their works."

I think this definition from GreyNet might need an update. Under this definition, diamond open access publishing - as seen in many titles in DOAJ or everything in say, Open Journals Collective or Open Education Network's Open Textbook Library falls under the umbrella of 'grey literature'.
