Insist on Realism Face reality as it is, not as you wish it to be. This principle is about honest conversations, facts over assumptions, and confronting challenges head-on. 3. Set Clear Goals and Priorities Focus on a few key priorities and make sure everyone understands them. Spreading efforts too thin leads to weak execution. 7 Essential Behaviors for Execution 1. Know Your People and Your Business Expanded as a behavior: dive into details, understand strengths, weaknesses, and capabilities. 2. Insist on Realism Create a culture where truth is spoken and tough issues aren’t avoided. 3. Set Clear Goals and Priorities Define measurable outcomes with timelines, and ensure alignment. 4. Retail Dive is reporting Walmart is laying off another 1,000 employees through straight layoffs or requiring relocation. This is another effort towards Walmart’s broader globalization efforts and restructuring to streamline operations. Global Chief Technology Officer and Chief Development Officer Suresh Kumar and Executive Vice President of AI Acceleration, Product and Design Daniel Danker are starting to put their stamp on the organization. Prompt Engineering is Now Core PM Craft If your team learns just one new skill this year, make it prompt engineering. Tim sets the expectation that PMs and UXers must be the best prompt engineers in the enterprise. The ability to interact with AI systems fluently is now as essential as understanding user needs. This shift reframes the PM role from problem solver to AI orchestrator. Implication: CPOs must actively upskill their teams and hire with prompt fluency in mind. Build with AI, Not Just for AI From copilots to custom GPTs, Tim emphasizes the massive productivity unlock when AI is embedded in how product teams work, not just what they build. Walmart’s PMs are already using AI assistants to double speed and accuracy across the product lifecycle. Implication: You need two AI strategies: 1) Build AI into your product 2) Build with AI in your processes Both matter. The former drives differentiation. The latter drives efficiency. Bottom Line: The future of product leadership demands fluency in AI, not just as a feature but as a collaborator. Building a technology centre is one thing. Deeply understanding who it exists for; that's another. When I joined eBay Bengaluru a few months back to build the technology centre, I came prepared for the hard work - defining culture, hiring the best, re-inventing the onboarding, building trust, delivering impact .. I can go on and on. But nothing (I say nothing) compares to sitting across from our sellers and listening to their stories. At our "Bengaluru Connect" and our recent inauguration, we invited sellers to meet the people who build for them. What followed was one of those rare moments that reminds you why you do what you do. A seller who never finished high school — thanks to ebay; today employs 125 people and has a positive impact on their families. A seller who with pride attributed his two children’s college education entirely to what eBay made possible. A seller who crossed a million dollars in revenue even before graduating college. These are not edge or isolated cases. They represent what a well-built platform, operated with genuine care for its community, can unlock in people’s lives. eBay’s mission is to connect people and build communities to create economic opportunity for all. It's core DNA is to empower the coummity. I had engaged with this principle during onboarding — seen the interviews, read the stories. But there is a meaningful difference between knowing something and experiencing it. Between reading about impact and looking someone in the eye as they describe what it meant to their family, their lives and their customers. I’ve always believed this: builders who deeply understand their customers — their experiences, their struggles, their wins — become better engineers, better thinkers, better builders. Not marginally better. Fundamentally better. These stories haven’t just inspired me. They’ve fuelled my team. They’re the reason we obsess over the details, push through the hard problems, and keep reaching for magical experiences. Six months in. More energised than ever. Thanks to Mrinal Chatterjee, Vidmay Naini and many others for enabling us to hear the voice of the customers directly at eBay Bengaluru.

The interesting part of Starbucks appointing Anand Varadarajan from Amazon as CTO is not that technology matters in retail. That is obvious. The interesting part is the type of technology leadership they appear to be reaching for. Amazon is not famous for pretty digital experiences. It is famous for operational discipline at scale. Throughput. Workflow. Automation. Data. Fulfilment. Labour efficiency. Customer convenience. Relentless removal of friction. That makes this appointment really interesting. Starbucks does not just have a digital challenge. It has a physical-world execution challenge shaped by digital demand. Mobile ordering changed customer behaviour. Loyalty changed data expectations. Store labour remains under pressure. Customers still judge the brand in the queue, at the counter and at handoff. So the CTO brief is not simply “improve the app”. It is likely much closer to: How do we make the whole operating system work better? These brilliant appointments are not just about technical pedigree. Amazon Ashish Mittal Order # 404-7797088-5372353 Your order support system is a thing of beauty! Instilling new customer behaviors...for example, teaching customers never to order multiple copies of any book on your platform, and worthy of the 'Endless Loop Award' in customer service! Please check my order and communication history. 1 - ordered 3 copies of a book. Only 1 got delivered. 2 - Customer gets the option to only replace / refund. No sign of getting help in sight, except for the 'endless loop of choose order and then choose return / replace option. Replace what - 1 book with 3? Tried this. Oh no...its gotto be more engaging! I get only 1 replaced for 1 returned. TWICE. Super. I had to deny a return pick up twice to ensure I have at least 1 copy with me. Thats creating scarcity value, isn't it? :) 3 - Miraculously reach customer care on chat and call via a secret option in one of the emails...when asked to either refund the money for 2 copies or to have them delivered...we realize that agents are trained only to repeat what the customer already sees on the screen. "Why dont you try the return/replace option? Coz thats the ONLY thing we can do for this order. Follow logic...oh please, this is Amazon after all! Cant escalate, cant pass on to a manager...just keep the customer on endless hold and he will drop off. yay! Worked perfectly. No call back was done as requested. 4 - So, is Amazon capable of delivering the missing 2 copies of the book in a single delivery? If not, will Amazon be accountable enough to return the money for these 2 missing copies to the customer? Let's see....coz this is only a 'one in a million' order/customer issue. In most likelyhood, can be be ignored, right?

Last month, Amazon launched Q Suite — an AI assistant. One of the features is that it can connect across multiple sources - email, docs, share point and calendars.  I tried it on one of my large cross-functional initiatives — with multiple teams, documents, and ongoing discussions. I simply asked: “Summarize all project updates, upcoming meetings, and key decisions from the last month.” And within seconds, it pulled everything together — - Read through all my emails on that topic and documents and gave a summary of what happened across these channels - The upcoming meetings on this topic from my calendar - A list of key decisions and owners from past discussions But here’s what I realized — The output quality depends on the input hygiene. So I made three changes: 1. Label emails correctly - in outlook you can add "categories" to label. 2. Folder discipline - one dedicated folder for each project. 3. Consistent naming - Put file names properly with the project or initiative name.

Most new leaders focus on managing their team. Then wonder why they're still struggling. At Amazon, I learned the hard way: Great leadership requires managing in four directions simultaneously. 1. Managing Your Team → Clear expectations and context → Development paths that build capability → Performance systems that scale This is where most people focus 100% of their energy. It's necessary. But insufficient. 2. Managing Up → Keep your boss informed without overwhelming them → Manage expectations proactively → Build trust through consistent delivery Your boss's success depends on you. Make their job easier. 3. Managing Out → Stakeholder alignment across functions → Resource negotiation for your team → Collaboration that multiplies impact You can't succeed in isolation. Build the right partnerships. 4. Managing Yourself → Self-awareness of triggers and patterns → Stress management and sustainability → Continuous learning and adaptation You can't lead others effectively if you're burned out. Most leaders excel at 1-2 spheres. The missing ones are where your bottlenecks live.
