Weekly Spotlight:
Tanner Rohr (SMBA '23)
Check out some of the experiences in the SMBA program from current student Tanner Rohr's perspective!
'Our participation in this program is a tool that allows us to expand our network. I didn’t find this more true than when I facilitated our guest speaker discussion with
Andy Holloway, host and founder of the Fantasy Footballers Podcast. After several threads of email communication with the show (the value of our .edu email is frequently emphasized), Andy agreed to speak with our class. During our Zoom call I was able to talk to him about what the show means to me, as well as ask him about his journey and its challenges. Not only was this just a fun conversation for me, but also a valuable learning experience where I got to facilitate a class discussion with a successful sports industry personality that I respect.
Two valuable aspects of the SMBA program have been the variety of case studies and the frequent experience presenting to a room full of people. In our Statistics class, we analyzed the data and reported our findings on whether a new golf ball coating caused the golf balls to travel further and more accurately, and therefore whether the company should proceed in making the coating. In a different case study for our Professional Development class, I was chosen to present my ideas on the validity of a potential partnership between the Seattle Mariners and a major beer brand, as well as new activation ideas for the partnership.
The more you practice presenting the better you get, especially when that practice happens in front of three Warriors executives, Mike Kitts, Dominic Lucq, and Sean Bell - Warriors executives and alumni of the SMBA program. In my presentation with Nathan Hall, I utilized topics I’ve learned in Statistics – Poisson and Binomial Distributions – to develop creative ideas on how the Warriors could approach jersey reveal. It was great to apply the methods I’ve learned with Dr
Ryan and Dr
Reinig to a real-world sports setting. I want to work with numbers and stats in the sports industry when I graduate and this opportunity gave me that direct experience.
The SMBA program also helped me land a great internship opportunity with
Navigate. Navigate is a data-driven sports strategy and entertainment consulting company, responsible for sponsorship valuation and sponsorship impact studies. I worked on the primary research side where I got experience in creating surveys, analyzing and presenting survey data results, and data visualization. This internship gave me immediate professional sports industry experience and showed me a potential career path I can pursue.
As someone who entered this program straight from undergrad, I already feel that I am in a much better place than before the program began. I believe the SMBA program has given me resources, connections, experiences and confidence I need to land a job that combines my strong academic background with my passion for sports.'
