This Small Business Appreciation Month, and every month, we celebrate the journeys of entrepreneurs like Melanie Wade-Styles, founder and CEO of Cultured South Fermentation Co. Melanie began brewing her grandmother Golda’s tea recipe in college and offered it as free samples to draw customers to her arts and crafts at a farmers market. The tea became so popular, it became her product. Today, her company includes Atlanta’s first kombucha taproom, a popular wholesale business, and a fermented foods line. Over a decade of business, Melanie has focused on her customers’ wellness. Read more about Melanie’s business journey, including her tips for fellow entrepreneurs.

Students from the Atlanta Falcons HBCU Fellows Program presented by Wells Fargo recently joined our employee and community volunteers to build 24 new homes and townhomes in Langston Park, Atlanta Habitat’s newest master-planned community. We’re empowering the next generation to continue the 40-year legacy of the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project, which has shown the lasting impact of giving back to communities through housing. As a longtime supporter of Habitat for Humanity, we’re committed to advancing affordable housing. Beyond making a community impact, fellows from Atlanta’s historically Black colleges and universities —Spelman College, Morehouse College, Morris Brown College, and Clark Atlanta University — get a behind-the-scenes view of highly sought-after careers in the sports and entertainment industry. This program creates a pipeline of emerging leaders equipped with promising professional connections, financial guidance, and a commitment to giving back to their community. Watch Jason Rosenberg, our head of Public Affairs, share why supporting community housing projects like the Carter Work Project matters. https://lnkd.in/eY8ckxKn

How does a DJ come to bake cupcakes for a living? Ask Henry Adeleye. This Small Business Appreciation Month, and every month, we celebrate the journeys of entrepreneurs like him. What started as a small apartment baking operation in 2014 has grown into Kupcakerie, an expanding number of cupcake and coffee shops across Atlanta. Henry, who DJ’d in college, sees a throughline with Kupcakerie and a passion for bringing people together. The shops host events and serve as places for people in the community to hangout — and listen to curated playlists. Neither Henry nor Kascha, his wife and cofounder, went to business school. But they’ve found resources to learn and opportunities to invest those skills back into the business. Henry’s tip for aspiring business owners? Go for it, always. Read more about Henry’s business journey, including his tips for fellow entrepreneurs.

From on-stage moments to candid exchanges, the Wells Fargo Alumni Network brought alumni and leaders together in Charlotte at the iconic Carolina Theatre for an evening full of surprises. Opening remarks from Mary Mack and a conversation with alumna Sara Toussaint explored leadership journeys, the influence of sports, and the impact of giving back. In that spirit, the Alumni Network awarded Special Olympics North Carolina a $10,000 grant to support athletes competing at this year’s Special Olympics USA Games in Minneapolis. As the official volleyball sponsor, Wells Fargo is proud to help these athletes compete on the national stage. It was energizing to reconnect with leaders like Kristy Fercho (our newest alumna!), Dana Ripley, Rob Engel and others shaping our legacy. Connections were rekindled, new ones formed, and one message came through clearly: these relationships don’t end, they evolve. #WellsFargoAlumni

Building more homes starts with training more people to build them. That’s why, last December, we announced a $2 million grant from Wells Fargo for the new Wells Fargo Homebuilding Lab at Southeast Technical College (STC) in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. On May 8, the same day 845 graduates crossed the stage at STC’s commencement ceremony, we broke ground on the building. “When we gathered for the announcement last year, we talked about our commitment to investing in people, skills, and opportunity,” said Wells Fargo Head of Public Affairs Jason Rosenberg. “Today, we’re taking the next step by turning that commitment into action.” The lab will give students hands-on, job-ready training in residential construction right on campus. “For students, this lab is about more than constructing a building,” said Dr. Cory Clasemann, president of STC. “It’s about building confidence, gaining real-world experience, and meeting real needs in our community.” We’re looking forward to visiting when construction wraps next year and seeing the next class of builders get to work.

For more than 170 years, we have supported the military community. That commitment comes to life through programs providing payment-free vehicles and homes to veterans across the country. Since 2015, we have partnered with Military Warriors Support Foundation (MWSF) to donate more than 140 vehicles through the Transportation4Heroes program. Each recipient also receives two years of financial mentoring, helping veterans pay down an average of over $50,000 in debt and delivering more than $4.9 million in total value. Our work with MWSF also extends to housing. Since 2012, Wells Fargo and the Wells Fargo Foundation have teamed up with MWSF to donate more than 400 mortgage-free homes to veterans in all 50 states through the Homes4WoundedHeroes program, representing roughly $60 million in value. “For many families, homeownership represents stability, security, and a fresh start,” said Jim McDermott, head of loan servicing at Wells Fargo. “We are committed to helping make that goal achievable for more people across the country.” This month, both programs continued to reach veterans in different parts of the country. Payment-free vehicles were delivered to recipients in Minnesota and Michigan, and a mortgage-free home was given to a retired Army sergeant in Arizona. We think of Military Appreciation Month as just one more opportunity to honor all those who served.
