Runners for Mental Health Awareness
About us
To promote the benefits of running for mental health, and, through our collective stories, defeat the stigma around mental illness. Still I Run is a community where people can share their experience of dealing with mental illness through running or any other type of physical activity. We encourage one another to take time out of our busy lives to run for our mental health. Through various programs we offer, we hope to educate others about running for mental health, raise mental health awareness, provide encouragement to others, and help people experiencing hardship get started in their running journey.

We’re beyond excited to announce that Still I Run has been selected as a 2025 lululemon Community Wellbeing Grant recipient! Thanks to this support from lululemon’s Centre for Social Impact, we’re making big moves. This grant helps fund a part-time program manager, program development tools, and new technology to expand our resources and better support runners on their mental health journeys. This is more than funding—it’s an investment in our community. With lululemon’s help, we can grow, reach more people, and provide even stronger mental health support through movement. Thank you, lululemon, for believing in the power of running for mental health. And thank YOU, Still I Run family, for being part of this movement!

2024 was a milestone year for Still I Run! Our community grew stronger, our reach expanded, and our impact deepened. We awarded more scholarships, launched new programs, added five Run Chapters, and were featured on national TV. Most importantly, we connected with over 2,000 individuals who used running to support their mental health. This growth isn’t by accident—it’s powered by people who believe in the mission, share their stories, and run for something greater than themselves. Earlier this week, Derrick Adkins, Olympic Gold Medalist and Still I Run advisory board member shared his story of brain injury-induced depression with our ambassadors. In light of Brain Injury Awareness Month we believe it is important to share his story and raise awareness that brain trauma can sometimes lead to mental health issues. "For years, I battled depression, not knowing why." - Derrick Adkins Derricks' struggle wasn't just mental. It stemmed from head injuries sustained during his hurdling days, colliding with hurdles, falling headfirst, and suffering significant injuries, including a broken collarbone. Despite the physical pain subsiding within days, the damage was done. Years later, Derrick found himself battling deep depression, a stark contrast to his successful and vibrant life. He was winning races, earning accolades, and achieving his dreams, yet a dark cloud hung over him. "All of these good things happening, but yet I began feeling depressed." For over two decades, Derrick navigated this dichotomy, seeking answers through therapy, faith, and sheer willpower. He faced psychiatric wards, addiction, and more. But the root cause remained hidden until a therapist suggested he read "Change Your Brain, Change Your Life" by Dr. Daniel Amen. This led him to the Amen Clinics, where a brain scan revealed underactivity in his frontal lobe, a direct result of his past head injuries. This was Brain Injury-Induced Depression (BID), a common but often overlooked consequence of brain trauma. "It only takes one head blow that can permanently alter the inner functioning of your brain." Derrick’s solution was targeted medication, a dopamine reuptake inhibitor (DRI), not the commonly prescribed serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). This targeted approach addressed the specific issue in his frontal lobe. Let's honor Derrick's journey by raising awareness about brain injury and its impact on mental health. Share his story and help us create a world where everyone understands the importance of brain health!
