  • Wishing the entire OpenSciEd team and our incredible partners the best of luck as they take the stage at #NSTA2026 this week! 🎉 This conference is such a powerful opportunity to connect with educators from across the country. We love seeing so many familiar faces and meeting teachers and leaders who are new to using OpenSciEd materials in their classrooms. Together, our team and partners are leading 30+ sessions designed to support high quality, student-centered science learning. From hands-on learning to deeper dives into instructional practices, these sessions are all about equipping educators with the tools, strategies, and confidence to bring OpenSciEd to life in real classrooms. If you're attending (or want to follow along), explore what's happening and start planning your schedule here: https://bit.ly/4emrjkM Here's to an inspiring week of learning, sharing, and advancing science education together! #LearnwithOpenSciEd #OpenSciEd #ScienceEducation #NSTA2026

  • We love seeing OpenSciEd learning extend beyond the classroom and into the real world! A recent SouthCoast Today article spotlights sixth graders using the OpenSciEd curriculum to participate in a global ideathon focused on tackling citrus disease. Through authentic science practices, collaboration, and problem-solving, students showed what’s possible when young people engage with meaningful, real-world challenges. This is student-centered science learning at its best! 🚀 #LearnwithOpenSciEd 🔗 Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/eRayeKv3 #OpenSciEd #ScienceEducation #STEMLearning

  • The final computer science–integrated units in the #OpenSciEd Middle School science program are now live and available to download for free! This milestone reflects years of collaboration among curriculum developers, classroom teachers, researchers, reviewers, and partners who generously contributed their expertise, time, and feedback. We’re deeply grateful to everyone who helped bring this work to life. #Thankyou These units embed computer science, where it naturally strengthens science learning—without adding instructional time or requiring a computer science background. Students tinker with technology, investigate phenomena, and use computational tools to help them figure out real science questions. Explore the units and see how computer science and science come together to support meaningful student-led learning. #LearnwithOpenSciEd 🔗https://bit.ly/4ebbLhY #ComputerScience #TeacherResources #FreeEducation #K12 #OpenSciEd

  • A new op-ed in The Hechinger Report by our executive director, James Ryan, makes clear that we can’t wait until high school to provide students with meaningful computer science (CS) education. Middle school is where identities and interests form—yet only 37% of public middle schools currently offer CS, despite 300,000+ CS job openings expected annually through 2034.   Integrating CS directly into middle school science classrooms is a powerful solution—bringing computational thinking, modeling, and data‑driven inquiry into learning that students already do every day.   That’s why we’re looking forward to launching the last three computer science–integrated units for our middle school program. Our goal: give every student the opportunity to engage with CS and prepare for a technology-driven future.   More to come soon! 🔗 Read the Article: https://lnkd.in/eSWZDAAa #LearnwithOpenSciEd #

  • It's Computer Science Education Week (#CSEdWeek), and here's the most encouraging truth for science teachers: You are already preparing students for a future shaped by AI. #LearnwithOpenSciEd Every time students: ✓ iterate on designs ✓ model a system ✓ recognize patterns ✓ analyze data ✓ reason from evidence … they're building the core thinking skills AI relies on. Explore how you can develop your students' ability to problem-solve, analyze data, and use computational methods with our computer science-integrated units in our article, "A Closer Look at What CS-Integration Looks Like in an OpenSciEd Unit" ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eNdKWv4p. #CSEdWeek #CSPowersAI #OpenSciEd #LearnwithOpenSciEd

  • OpenSciEd's computer science (CS)-integrated middle school units are designed to make CS support science learning, not replace it. By embedding CS into rich, phenomena-based science storylines, these units help teachers seamlessly teach important skills for AI. Here's how our CS-integrated units support students and teachers: 1️⃣ CS tools help students collect data, analyze patterns, and design solutions while bringing a fresh and powerful set of options to teachers' toolkits 2️⃣ While students take ownership of their learning by problem-solving, testing ideas, revising and developing code, and iterating sensor-based designs, teachers gain more entry points for diverse learners. Computational tools support differentiation, accessibility, and multiple ways to show understanding 3️⃣ Students use tools similar to those scientists and engineers use to make sense of and design solutions for our world. This helps teachers connect their instruction to emerging careers and technologies. Making explicit links to AI, engineering, and data-driven fields strengthens instructional impact and helps students see themselves as scientists and engineers. OpenSciEd's CS-integrated units were designed to deepen science learning while preparing students and supporting teachers for a future shaped by technology. Want to see how CS integration deepens science learning? • This Computer Science Education Week (#CSEdWeek), K-12 schools are highlighting how computer science powers AI innovation, and we couldn’t agree more. 🚀 However, as AI becomes a bigger part of our world, one thing hasn’t changed: AI can’t replace the skills students develop through participating in sensemaking. In fact, as AI becomes more widespread, student sensemaking becomes more essential. 1️⃣ Sensemaking requires and teaches students to weigh evidence, consider alternatives, and critique models; skills every AI software will require from its users and designers. 2️⃣ Students can develop their pattern recognition skills through scientific reasoning. Deep science understanding can help students make AI insights meaningful. 3️⃣ Hands-on testing, revising ideas, and making evidence-based decisions all prepare students to shape the technologies of the future. While AI might change our tools, it does not change the essential work of high quality science learning. This CSEdWeek, explore how OpenSciEd’s CS-integrated middle school units give students opportunities to build the computational thinking, problem-solving, and science reasoning that will help them live and succeed in a future that includes AI. ❓Question: How are your students using sensemaking to understand the world around them? #CSEdWeek #CSPowersAI #OpenSciEd #LearnwithOpenSciEd
