Open Observatory of Network Interference (OONI) Foundation reposted this
I'm excited to (finally!) speak in my home city of Athens and meet the FOSS community in Greece! 😍 Tomorrow at FOSSCOMM 2026, I'll be talking about why free software matters more than ever for human rights. ✊ I'll also be hosting an OONI booth on both days of the conference, so come say hi, grab some OONI stickers and brochures, and learn how to use OONI tools! 🐙 ✨
After finding the guy who carries half of the world’s internet traffic on his back, we decided to bring the person who carries the receipts of every government that tried to switch off the internet on her back. Maria Xynou is the Co-founder of the Open Observatory of Network Interference (OONI) Foundation and serves on the Board of Directors of The Tor Project. When a regime blocks an app or throttles the internet and claims it’s “just a temporary technical glitch,” her work is the reason the rest of the world has the receipts. Through OONI Probe, volunteers have collected over 2 billion network measurements across 242 countries and territories, building one of the world’s largest open datasets on internet censorship (which even got OONI Explorer blocked in Russia, basically the ultimate 5-star review for an anti-censorship tool). On October 31 and November 1, she’s joining us at the University of West Attica for FOSSCOMM 2026. Come hear how open-source software exposes global censorship in real time, find out whether your ISP is actually just having a bad day and raid the OONI booth for stickers, which no government has managed to ban yet. Registration is free and your ISP hasn’t blocked this link yet, so you officially have zero excuses to miss it: https://2026.fosscomm.gr
