Yesterday the NYSE welcomed Charles Schwab to ring the Closing Bell as they celebrated the launch of National Investing Day. The Bell ringing coincided with the 50th anniversary of May Day 1975, the day the SEC formally abolished fixed-rate commissions, which had been a mainstay of trading since 1792, paving the way for discount brokerages to operate on the NYSE trading floor. Six years later, Charles Schwab himself stood on that very trading floor as head of a newly minted NYSE member firm. In the years since, Schwab has joined the Exchange time and again for its own stock listings, ETF launches, and product announcements.
