Last week, following the Naval Postgraduate School 2026 Winter Quarter Graduation ceremony, the NPS Foundation hosted a reception to recognize and celebrate the graduating class. This quarter, more than 180 advanced degrees were awarded across defense-focused disciplines, including to a cohort of international military officers representing countries around the world. Students, faculty, staff, and families gathered to mark this achievement, connect with one another, and celebrate the graduates as they completed a rigorous and operationally relevant education at NPS. 📖 View the full gallery: https://lnkd.in/gviieNfB #NavalPostgraduateSchool #NPSGraduation #MilitaryEducation #DefenseStudies #AdvancedDegrees #MilitaryOfficers #InternationalCohort #GraduationCeremony #NPSFoundation #OperationalEducation

Two Naval Postgraduate School alumni will lead Artemis II, the first crewed mission to travel around the Moon in more than 50 years, currently expected to launch on April 1. The 10-day, 500,000-mile mission will test the systems and operations required for future lunar missions and long-duration spaceflight. “As someone who has worked at NASA for so many years, it’s wonderful to see this mission led by two NPS alumni,” said Michael Hesse, NPS’ Vice Provost for Research and Innovation and former director of the science directorate at NASA Ames Research Center. “For a school that has educated so many astronauts and so many others who are involved in the science, technology, and applications of space programs across the globe, it’s a tremendous honor to have this connection as humankind finally returns to the Moon.” From leading the Shuttle to ground control in Houston to space systems research at NPS’ Space Systems Academic Group in Monterey, #NPS continues to contribute directly to the people and capabilities behind missions like this. At #NVIDIAGTC 2026, it was clear that as barriers to building AI systems decrease, advantage is moving toward organizations that can apply them effectively, quickly and responsibly. The Naval Postgraduate School and NPS Foundation were there, with the Foundation supporting student and faculty participation and direct engagement with the teams building and deploying systems like NemoClaw for secure, agent-based AI and cuOpt for large-scale optimization. Through that direct engagement, hands on training and early access to emerging tools, NPS is getting ahead of these technologies and developing leaders who can evaluate and apply them in complex operational environments. “The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) gave me the opportunity to expand into new academic domains, such as machine learning, while leveraging the school's experience in military manpower,” said upcoming graduate Royal Australian Air Force Squadron Leader Darby Nelson. And that opportunity is paying off. National and allied partner security is a team sport, and U.S. Navy efforts in international security cooperation and interoperability are advanced by NPS’ community of international students, developing innovative solutions to warfighting challenges right alongside their U.S. counterparts. In addition to her master’s degree in manpower systems analysis, Nelson completed a graduate certificate in operational data science, applying coursework in AI and statistical machine learning with a small team of students to develop FASTCAT, or Frequency-based Algorithm for Spatial and Temporal Clustering Analysis with Thresholds. “FASTCAT is a user-adjustable tool we created to analyze data with limited variables and creates an interactive dashboard to support the decision maker with near-real-time battlefield information,” Nelson said. “This tool uses feature engineering, unsupervised machine learning, and network analysis to turn data into information to support the decision maker.” Field tested, the NPS student team’s novel decision support tool was well received with senior leaders. Nelson’s thesis supporting her NPS master’s explored another application of machine learning, this time in support of Australian Defence Force goals to increase reserve service participation. “My thesis explores the application of machine learning to predict separating, full-time Australian Defence Force members’ reserve service participation, and intensity of that participation,” Nelson explained. Her analysis demonstrates how machine learning can inform targeted reserve outreach strategies to support desired growth, while also revealing the constraints that work against it. These innovative applications of emerging technologies exemplify NPS’ unique mission in graduate education and research. “While [NPS] provided me tools to answer current questions, it also provided me with the interest to continue to grow the knowledge I learned at NPS as our challenges and environment continue to evolve into the future,” she said. Join Nelson and all of our upcoming graduates for Winter Quarter Graduation with commencement speaker Vice Adm. Jeffrey Czerewko, Chief of Naval Personnel, on Friday, March 27, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Pacific. • Watch graduation live: https://lnkd.in/gBxhsNFu • Learn more about the graduating class: https://nps.edu/graduation • More about AI/ML at NPS: https://nps.edu/web/ai US Navy | United States Marine Corps | Defence Australia | Royal Australian Air Force #international #partnerships #AI #artificialintelligence #MachineLearning #AlliesAndPartners #usnavy #AusAirForce
