❗ Digital Defense: Discussion at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich with TUM-Professors Lorenzo Masia and Daniel Cremers At the conference “Digital Defense: How Deep Tech Redefines Military Capabilities” kindly organized last week by Münchner Kreis e.V. both Professors presented current perspectives on the role of modern technologies in the security and defense sectors. Daniel Cremers, Director of the Munich Center for Machine Learning, the Munich Data Science Institute, and ELLIS Munich, provided insights into his internationally leading research on image processing, machine learning, and robotics. As co-founder of the startup SE3 Labs, he demonstrated how Spatial AI is laying the foundation for a new generation of intelligent systems—and that groundbreaking innovations are emerging not only in Silicon Valley but also in Garching. Lorenzo Masia presented his assessment of dual-use research in the fields of robotics and AI. He emphasized that scientific developments such as prosthetics or exoskeletons can be used for both civilian and military purposes and advocated for the further development of the European dual-use strategy. Unlike in the U.S., where the majority of research is military-funded, research in Europe must be more closely integrated into security-related applications without developing offensive weapon systems. The conference focused on the “digital battlefield”—an increasingly data-driven, networked, and AI-supported defense architecture. Live from the @NVIDIA #GTC! Best takeaway so far from the last two days is that elite “knowers” will have a significant advantage over elite “coders” moving forward. This highlights the requirement for domain knowledge and developing the talent that can lead a group of agents to achieve meaningful outcomes. Developing domain expertise for national security has been and remains the core mission of the Naval Postgraduate School. Here are a few other takeaways: 1) The path from prototype to production has never been faster. 2) Every organization needs an agentic strategy NOW. 3) The focus is on ROI and real outcomes. 4) The market is changing in days and weeks. It is not clear how the government can operate effectively in that environment. 5) Generative AI is useful but there are times when more straightforward machine learning solutions are more useful. 6) Leveraging high quality, curated data provides a strategic advantage, especially for AI agents. OpenAI finished pretraining its next flagship model, codenamed "Spud," and expects it to accelerate the economy within weeks. The company is shutting down Sora, renaming its product org to "AGI Deployment," and Altman is stepping back from safety to focus on capital, supply chains, and data centers. I'm old enough to remember when it was the GPU Technology Conference and Jensen didn't need a stadium to hold a keynote.
