Today, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia issued a decisive ruling declaring the key provision of Executive Order 14290, "Ending Taxpayer Subsidization of Biased Media," unconstitutional. The ruling granted summary judgment in favor of NPR, permanently enjoining the administration from enforcing its directives that sought to punish NPR and the entire public media system, based on allegations of bias. This is a victory not just for NPR and the NPR Network, but for the First Amendment and the American people. The court affirmed what we have argued from the beginning: the government cannot use the power of the purse to punish the press or suppress viewpoints it dislikes. This ruling does not reinstate the federal funding that was clawed back by Congress in a July 2025 rescission vote, and does not award any additional funding to NPR or public media stations. The loss of federal funding remains a significant challenge to public media organizations across the country, and listener donations are essential to ensuring continued station operations.

Each year, the Alliance for Women in Media presents the Gracie Awards — a well-deserved spotlight on the brilliant, boundary-pushing work created by women across media. This year, we’re proud to honor public radio’s incredible showing. Congratulations to every journalist, producer, and host across the public radio network whose work made this recognition possible. And thank you to the sources and communities who trusted public radio to tell their stories. Recognition for the NPR Network spans investigative journalism, crisis coverage, public affairs, science, health reporting, and cultural storytelling. It’s a testament to what happens when a network of independent stations and a national newsroom share a common mission: to tell the stories that matter most, with the rigor and humanity they deserve. #TheGracies remind us that when women’s voices are amplified, the entire media landscape becomes richer, more dynamic, and more inclusive. We’re going face-to-face with the person of the moment. Today, we’re launching NPR’s Newsmakers — a long-form interview show built on one guest, one award-winning host, and a real conversation. This new cross-platform series brings the biggest names in politics, business, sports, arts, and culture out of the headlines and into the hot seat. Our first episode drops today with Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, in conversation with NPR’s Steve Inskeep . Whether it’s uncovering the complexity behind a cultural phenomenon or unpacking the fine print of a policy, we're exploring how the people behind the headlines are shaping the culture. And Newsmakers is just getting started. Watch full-length interviews on NPR.org, NPR’s YouTube channel, and Spotify. Or listen on Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Up First, Consider This — wherever you get your podcasts, or on your local NPR Member station nationwide. If curiosity is the fuel of a functioning democracy, then American institutions like NPR are built to keep democracy alive. Questions as big and small as “How?” “Who?” and “Why?” are the seed of all our stories — and at the heart of what it means to be curious. This month, we’ve replaced the three letters in our name with the three-letter questions to remind us why curiosity is a right worth protecting. It’s a pledge to continue to provide the trusted context you need to explore the world, keep listening, and asking the hard questions. Take your curiosity further by reading more about our campaign: https://lnkd.in/eyGsazeJ #npr #foryourrighttobecurious

NPR CEO Katherine Maher accepted the National Press Foundation's W.M. Kiplinger Award for Distinguished Contributions to Journalism last week in Washington, D.C., dedicating the recognition to the nearly 3,000 local public media journalists across the NPR Network. As Katherine said in her acceptance remarks: "This award rightfully belongs to every newsroom in public media." Thank you to the NPF for this honor — and for celebrating the bold, independent journalism of NPR and the NPR Network that fosters curiosity and understanding in communities in every corner of America. 📸 : Lisa Nipp for NPF
