This is an exceptionally challenging time for civil society organizations in Latin America. It’s easy enough for donors or outside observers to call for organizations to “reinvent themselves” but what does this actually look like in practice? And what kind of support makes it possible? I can’t think of a better case study than Fabretto Children's Foundation, which after decades of work in rural Nicaragua was forced to rethink its entire model in 2022. Fabretto's annual report, which landed in my inbox today, shows how far they have come since then – in part by reimagining themselves not only as a direct service organization, but as a hub of distinctive expertise that enhances the impact of like-minded organizations. We are delighted and grateful to see Fabretto partnering with two Tinker grantees: Asociación Q'eqchi' Xch'ool Ixim (Heart of Corn) (Guatemala) and Un Mundo (Honduras). “We reaffirmed our commitment to Fabretto’s core mission since Padre Fabretto first arrived in Nicaragua: serving children and youth by creating opportunities for them to thrive. How and where we work has changed, but we continue to give life to his spirit of service across Guatemala and Honduras.” Fabretto’s Executive Director Kevin Marinacci tells the story of this transformation - and the critical role played by a few key donors - in a recent Alliance Magazine piece (link in comments).
